Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I repeat: DEVO

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

". . . they pull me back in!" Yeah, I'm kinda up for Devo.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet. where is this thing?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Seattle Center, site of the Space Needle, Experience Music Project, and an amusement park. Bumbershoot happens every Labor Day weekend; this year it's Sept. 2-5. Best music festival in the U.S., bar none.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting lineup....could actually be called *eclectic*

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the preliminary announcements, not the full lineup. for a broader idea of what they tend to get, see http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0435/040901_music_bumbershoot.php

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting lineup. There are a few on there that I've never heard before.

Best music festival in the U.S., bar none.

Ahem, didn't Nickelback play last year?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, they did. Puddle of Mudd opened for them. it's STILL the best music festival in the U.S.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

even if you're talking sum-of-its-parts, which I'm kind of not. the atmosphere at B-shoot is super relaxed and fun, it's very much a family outing kind of deal but not terribly Disneyfied. I have a great time everytime I go there, no matter who's playing.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just messin'. It is a great festival. :)

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, I figured. :-)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

My only minor bitch/complaint is that the electronic side of things is always an afterthought with the committee these days.

That didn't prevent me seeing Herbert (a live set related to Bodily Functions) at Bumbershoot 2001... I wish there was something of Herbert's stature at every Bumbershoot, but that hasn't happened in a while.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Photek played last year! they're pretty similar, stature-wise.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that's right.. I probably was seeing something conflict last year.

I'm still waiting for the surprise super-headliner. Devo is going to be great of course, but I'm still waiting. The Pixies were added relatively late last year, remember.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Who do you think will be the surprise this year, donut?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

THE STROKES!

(kidding)

(BTW, if Devo do nothing but Smooth Noodle Maps songs and their NIN cover, I'm going to be pissed.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dino Jr, perhaps? They still haven't announced tour dates for the west coast yet.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear god. never mind.

I'M HAPPY DEVO ARE HEADLINING, YAY DEVO!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not a fan I guess. Oh well.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a fan.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope Devo is not the Monday night act, because I am only going to be able to go on Friday and Saturday this year.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumbershoot would be awesome if it wasn't for fact that about 50% of Seattle is usually there. Everytime I go, I get so freaked by the massive crowds that I end up drunk in a beer tent within two hours.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and this is a complaint?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

fair enough

darin (darin), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like getting stuffed on elephant ears and all the various food booths.

Three words - BRICK O' FRIES!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmmmmmmm...elephant ears.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmmmmmmm . . . drum circles.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Herbert is the only thing i've ever seen at Bumbershoot that was worth dealing with the mix of East Side Yuppies, pathetic Broadway strolling Hipsters and crusty hemp-wearing, arm-pit smelling trustafarians. How can you say it's the best music fest in the USA? You must work for them or promote for the fest because it's largely shit but at an affordable price. Coachella is millions of times better than Bumbershoot. Whoever made the point of the Electronic music being an afterthought is dead on. I recommend staying far away from Bumbershoot at all costs. Devo will probably play a seperate show at the Paramount so the one and only reason to go is out the window. Plus you'd have to stand in line to get a bracelet for Devo, then stand in line to get into a dilapidated stadium with horrible acoustics. I'm just trying to provide a Fair and Balance view here since there are some incredibly inaccuate statements about the merits of the festival further upthread.

i've got the Herbert performance on VHS so i can relive the only valued moment at Bumbershoot in the 7years i've lived in Seattle. No need to go again unless New Order announce they're playing or Herbert comes back.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Buck Owens never played Coachella. Linton Kwesi Johnson either.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Linton Kwesi Johnson...good point.

Bjork/Underword/New Order/MIA/Bloc Party...let's not go into the details because there's no way in hell Bumbershoot will win.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're talking bands only, argue away. It's all opinion anyway. I think Matos was talking about the whole experience of it.

And god forbid, people who are not music geeks like you surround you. I like Bumbershoot precisely for that reason. It isn't just all hipsters... they appear, but it's a rather pretentiousless experience... and there's plenty of other things to do besides watch bands...

I've been to the This Ain't No Picnic festivals in O.C. in 1999 and 2000.. and while those were fun, I felt a bit trapped after a while, because it was just soooo "we're all here to see these truly great bands".. that's not the case at Bumbershoot.. there's a sense of freedom and come-as-you-go.

I'm not going to ignore the problems with getting into some venues at times, no doubt.. it isn't perfect.. but as for a fair, it's not the massive ripoff that other festivals have become.

Also, Seattle Center >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> fucking Coachella/Indio, CA at almost any time of the year.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, most importantly, can you buy a BRICK O' FRIES at Coachella for under $3?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously I'm talking about the whole experience and not act-for-act. I have gone several times and enjoyed myself at each of them. (the years: '96, '97, '03, '04.) and no, I haven't been to every festival in the U.S., there's a thing called hyperbole, which given the tone of biznotic's comment I'd like to think they know a little bit about. (if we are talking act for act, I don't like Bjork or Underworld and have seen and yawned to Bloc Party)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, festivals that are highly condensed with great bands suck mainly because attendees are doomed to only see half of the bands they came for, because of conflicting schedules. How many times has one been hyped on Coachella and then got there and had to miss two of the three main reasons he/she went in the first place?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That does happen at Bumbershoot too, but at least you can escape, there are things you can enjoy that don't involve music... which to me, is very important. I think this may boil down to an age thing, mainly. Bumbershoot is more of a Seattle tradition/family gathering type event that's best enjoyed by the "older" crowd.. whereas Coachella is geared to the 20s/early 30s crowd almost exclusively...

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

by "escaping".. I mean, you can walk across the street and have restaurants there, or a record store there, etc.

Coachella? Hell no. if you escape, you go back to a horizon of dirt.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

plus it's a lot more interesting to me to be in a crowd w/a fairly broad assortment of people, agewise at least, and interests-wise as well. I'd probably enjoy myself at Coachella, too, but as donut puts it, I suspect there's more of a self-congratulatory vibe at it that wouldn't necessarily put me off, but which seem more one-dimensional than B-shoot. which I'm for in a lot of ways; shared interests are great to have. but I know what I'm in for at something like Coachella; there's more of a random factor at Bumbershoot that I quite like. I'm also a city person more than a desert person, so there's that to consider. (xpost)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like the lit/comics/comedy/film/art aspect of Bumbershoot a lot. Mostly that it's there and available than because it's wall-to-wall genius, not unlike the music stuff.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Essentially, Bumbershoot is the perfect festival for people who are burned out on out-of-the-way mega-rock/rave-festivals.

*raises my wrinkled hand*

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

or people who don't particularly care about seeing good bands. the art aspect to Bumbershoot is big on intent, short on delivery.

It is all subjective. My experiences at Bumbershoot have been overwhelmingly disappointing. The weather at Bumbershoot is unbeatable and the prices are more affordable than other fests. The lack of interesting bands makes it a magnificent waste of time though. Sure you can point out up to 3 decent bands for each year but that's it. We simply disagree but i think you should admit your ties to the fest if you have them because your glowing praises are far from reality and don't make sense to me unless you work for One Reel or have ties to people who do.

Agree about Bloc Party, though. I suppose my biggest problem with Bumbershoot is the terrible line-up and the East Siders trying to mingle with the common folks.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

and the East Siders trying to mingle with the common folks.

God forbid.

(haha, I guess you don't like the Blood Brothers then.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

that Bollywood dance/hip-hop night at the Mirabeau room... i mean, all those goddamn East Side Indians mingling with common folks like me! For shame.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a digable planets gig announced here not long ago. I had no idea they'd regrouped.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ok. my comment was unfair about you working for the fest. i can see your angle and i wish i got that satisfaction from Bumbershoot. it would be great to have a hometown festival you enjoyed but until they get some more big name electronic acts, i won't be attending.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hell, my paper doesn't even sponsor the festival anymore! I have no professional or personal ties whatsoever to the thing. (aside from having to cover it every year, but I don't mind that.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the Decibel Festival folks kicked something off last year, and I'm hoping this year will again supplant some type of electronic fest type thing here.

Then again, who knows.. Michael Mayer or Fennesz might be added to Bumbershoot this year. Fat chance, but a chance nonetheless.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos, where did you get the linep info from? The Bumbershoot site is still in a '04 mode. Is it published somewhere?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The organizers sent it out to local media today. It'll probably be on the site by week's end.

I'm a HUGE electronic music fan and that's definitely an area I'd like to see B-shoot improve on. I missed Decibel last year while recovering from surgery but am very interested in seeing it this year. biznotic, did you attend that? How was it?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh okay, thanks.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Biznotic, maybe shops wouldn't close, but what if you told all your waitpeople friends that they'd make 10-20% less on tips because suburbanites decided to stay home? I think I know what they'd say: who gives a shit where they're from, bring the money.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right. all my friends would be broke and Seattle would deteriorate if you east side pansy's stayed on your side of the lake. glad you pointed that out. now that you mention it, all my money comes from the East Side and i hear all the sunny weather we had in February was because of the kind and rich folks on the east side. Tonight, i'll thank my lucky stars i live so close to a wonderful, caring community.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"on your side of the lake"? get over yourself last year, dude.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

this is like the lamest gang war ever

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

meet me at the park overlooking 520 at 6pm today for a skuffle. not sure where you'll park your SUV but i'm sure you'll find a spot.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I can't believe how many people on this thread have never had a brick o fries. Clearly, we'll have to organize a FABOF this September. (Hint: you can also get them at the Puyallap fair, along with the Earthquake Burger, named for the effect it has on your bowels).

I'm not a lakeist, some of my best friends live on the East Side.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos, can you pick me up in your SUV on the way? I'll wait on the corner in an izod, golf shorts, and topsiders (no socks).

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha of course!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Biznotic, to ignore the fact that suburbs and city have an unfortunate symbiotic relationship is to stick your head in the sand. I have neither special affection for nor desire to return to the suburbs, but I do appreciate that they're where I came from, for better and for worse. Gave me a place to rebel against, yo.

I've been trying to figure out why I've posted more to this thread than any other, and I'd have to guess that most of my reaction is emotional. When I was 16 and 17, coming into town from the suburbs and going to the old Cellophane Square, Fallout, The OK Hotel, The Party Hall, and yes, Bumbershoot, were all I wanted. To say that the chance go to these places changed my life would not be an overstatement. THINK OF TEH CHILDREN, BIZNOTIC.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We should have an FAP where we eat the brick of fries and then have elephant ears for desert. And then take the rollercoaster. See who survives.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't survive, but then I can't really eat fries or elephant ears (diabetic, avoids starches)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

We could fill you up on The Decembrists and then make you ride the roller coaster. See if you could survive that.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the fry question sadly remains unanswered

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, jergins, i don't think independent shops in Seattle would close if folks who choose to live on the east side, stayed and shopped on the east side. i'd love it if they did all their shopping at Bellevue Square. Seattle folks will keep our independent shops alive without Microsoft money.

What if you live in Seattle, are a music geek, but work at Microsoft? I know from very personal experience *cough* that a lot of Microsoft money has made it to Jive Time, Fallout (when it was alive), Singles Going Steady, Easy Street, Everyday Music, etc.

Also, about a third of the audience at the Dizzee Rascal show last month I recognized as Microsoft employees. Also, a chunk of the folks who helped make the Decibel Festival happen are Microsoft employees. Yeah, keep away that Microsoft money, guys.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, here are the Metallic French Fries right by the EMP

http://mk23.image.pbase.com/u36/ericnoel/small/32205107.metallicfrenchfries.jpg

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't locate a picture of the BRICK O' FRIES, but they're made by the Ziegler's Bratwurst booth, and maybe others.

Just imagine an 8" by 4" brick of cement, but except for being comprised of cement, it's comprised of a swirling yellow-to-dark-golden-brown kaleidoscope of fresh deep-fried curly fries. I already want labor weekend to come NOW just thinking about that BRICK O' FRIES!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and, ah, elephant ears:

http://www.detnews.com/pix/2004/08/16/feat/fe16-eleear-0804y.jpg

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is it served with a lil' brick o' salt, by any chance?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nope. however, there are tons of things you can sprinkle on it, like salt, pepper, paprika.. and then liquid stuff like ketchup mustard, and tons of things.

You mean you haven't had THE BRICK O' FRIES, M? OMG!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

jergins, I <3 U!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Why wait until Labor Day? How about a Brick of Frites?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get a CONE O' FRITES at the pomme frites place near Neumo's.. until at least 2am on any given night, practically.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, Kate knows that!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(see above about dietary restrictions, donut)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ah ah. shit. sorry, Matos.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

To answer Kate's question, BRICK O' FRIES (or Ziegler's Bratwurst booth specifically) usually appear at any festival in the Seattle area.. "Bite Of Seattle", the Hemp festival, the Puyallup fair, Bumbershoot, and others.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well, truthfully, i've got a pretty sweet life with very little to complain about so there are times that i complain about shit i've got no right to complain about. that's basically where this whole thing comes from but for the sake of an argument, i'm going to hold my position. fries are good, Bumbershoot needs better music before you go saying it's the best music fest in America.

biznotic, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes only you are allowed to use hyperbole on this thread, thanks for playing

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, now I'm arguing just to argue, too, so I'll cut it out.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

everybody get together and try to love bricks o' fries right now.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

not difficult! I can enjoy the fact of them (and sneak one or two in while the doctor's not looking)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Biznotic, I hate to burst your sitcom-level buzz, but you are still f-ed in the head. There is way more Softies living in Seattle and working on the Eastside (acting cool, no less) than Eastside Softies who come to "your" city to "camp" it up. If you'd grown up here, you would know that the traffic used to be westbound in the morning, and eastbound at night...why don't you try that now and let me know if it's maybe not the opposite. Stupid Microsoft!

But seriously, it's great to have you here, be sure to tell everyone about it when you go back to Nebraska or Montana or whatever.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Saturday, 7 May 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
If I decide to make this my remaining North American jaunt from NYC this year (eschewing the Toronto film fest), how late can I decide and still get into the main shows, and get a decent cheap room? Yeah, I've never been to Seattle.

I'd be going in considerable part for the aforementioned lit/comedy/film/art aspect.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

very late. the one ticket pays for everything. to get into the big shows, you just have to start lining up early before the show.

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Cool. Has Black Uhuru been confirmed? I saw them open for the Police in '82.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

The concept of Bumbershoot "selling out" is really a hard one to grasp, as it takes place on a huge public park. You'd have to reunite Pink Floyd and the Beatles on one bill to physically do that. (Yes, you'd need to learn how to resurrect the dead.)

The idea of missing out on a headlining show, however, is much easier (like Devo this year, for instance), but all you have to do is just get to any of the gates to Seattle Center by opening time the day of that show.. (usually 10am or 11am?), then just jot over to the booths where they hand out free wristbands, one per person, and once you get one, you're set.

A friend of mine even showed up an hour after open gates last year, and still got to see Pixies.. and I'm guessing the general rush to see Devo this coming year won't be as fervent as it was for Pixies last year.

So, yeah, get your pass for any of the four days you want either now (when they're cheaper) or even the day of the event (when they're slightly less cheaper) and just be prompt at the gates on the days you want to see the headliner that particular day, and you're set.

Cheap places in Seattle to stay? I think my friend J. found a great deal above the Moore theatre in downtown for $30 or so a night(?).. on 2nd and Stewart. It's probably not anything extravagent at all.. probably sub-Motel 6 even, but it's a room. Otherwise, try Travelodge or Days Inn, as I know one of each are close to Seattle Center/Denny Way.

anything off Denny Way, between downtown and lower Queen Anne, or anything in lower Queen Anne, period, is a good location, as Seattle Center is just across the street or mere blocks away from any of these places. Don't know what the cost will be, per night, though. I just live here.. haha.

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

In light of my earlier enthusiasm, the rather humdrum lineup this year is probably more humbling than biznotic's posts. Still, being right across the street still = me attending happily.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Did they announce the full lineup yet?

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

http://www.bumbershoot.com - go to lineup.

The full lineup is always subject to change, but rarely do any of the big names change. If anything, pleasant surprises get added within a month of the event, occasionally.

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to the Capitol Hill Block Party right now, which is quite underrated IMHO, as far as national rock festivals go. It's much smaller, and it's just two days, and yeah it's mostly "local" bands (which is mainly the point anyway) but it's cheap, there are plenty of great bands, and it's a great vibe overall (and not nearly as many "annoying East Side SUV owners", haha, for those of you who are squeamish about such things).. the moment I get info on it, which is likely tomorrow, when The Stranger - the main host of the event - will announce details, I'm guessing, I'll start a thread for it.

In the meantime, A-Frames this Friday (@ the Funhouse.. again)! Rock happens all the time, yay!

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So, both Devo and Ani DiFranco cancel with days as headliners...

I'd reeally hate to be the Bumbershoot organizers right now... I fear they're going to pull some obvious and boring local fill-ins to replace the headlining spots.

I'm just bummed I get to miss Devo. And I could never go out of my way and pay $80 to see them at a House Of Blues type place. They needed to be in a large stadium with a huge phalanx of spuds. That would have been so great. sigh.

That's too bad about Devo dropping out.

I'll be back in a few days with flow chart diagrams and critical path designs so I can figure out what the hell I'm doing these four days.

OK, REAL BUMBERSHOOT GOAL ACHIEVED!

BRICK O' FRIES, THE MOTHERFUCKERS! (although the brick part kinda fell apart a few seconds I moved them..)

..otherwise, saw Kweli, Common, and The Locust today. All interesting sets, to say the least.. The Locust were quite amazing actually. I think they finally decided to become the hardcore/noise equivalent of the Residents (which is no surprise as almost every rock musician from San Diego has to love the Residents and Beefheart. it's an unstated law there.)

Sad I missed Bill Frisell Trio yesterday.

Will see the Buttrock Suites, Meredith Monk, Kinski, Mudhoney, and The Stooges tomorrow!
