Britpop Albums POXX

Inspired by another thread ranking certain famous Britpop albums.

The following don't count as Britpop here:
Anyone who predated Britpop chronologically, such as Stone Roses, Auteurs, La's, or even Squeeze, The Jam, XTC, Elvis Costello or Nick Lowe
Anyone who is not from the British Isles (so no Wannadies, Brainpool nor Soundtrack Of Our Lives)
More experimental indie acts such as Radiohead and Muse
Any British act who clearly isn't Britpop musically (i.e. not retro, hardly using guitars, not song-oriented/melodic etc, not writing their own songs, or simply very American sounding)

I have decided that I let the current generation of radio-friendly melancholics count, even though they are a borderline case chronologically

Now, for the list:

1. Dodgy: Free Peace Sweet
2. Super Furry Animals: Radiator
3. Dodgy: Homegrown
4. Travis: The Invisible Band
5. Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power
6. Travis: The Man Who
7. Doves: The Last Broadcast
8. Electric Soft Parade: Holes In The Wall
9. Blur: The Great Escape
10.Super Furry Animals: Rings Around The World
11.Blur: Parklife
12.Coldplay: Parachutes
13.Supernaturals: It Doesn't Matter Anymore
14.Oasis: (What's The Story) Morning Glory
15.Keane: Hopes And Fears
16.Coldplay: Rush Of Blood To The Head
17.Supergrass: Life On Other Planets
18.Athlete: Tourist
19.Travis: 12 Memories
20.Oasis: Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

No Pulp, no Suede. Both were great, but not quite as great as lots of the other acts here.

there are too many rules. only 20 records fit your criteria. luckily, you have them all in your list. well done lad

Since when are Coldplay and Travis Britpop? Since when did Britpop still even fucking exist in 2003?

I give up. Delete thread.

Craig David is not Britpop for the following reasons:

- Britpop has ABSOLUTELY ZERO R&B elements
- He isn't a band
- He is way too keyboard based

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Geir....it's been said before and it will be said again but it bears repeating...: you suck.

Frogm@n Henry, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

You suck, hijacking a thread that is supposed to be about a MUSIC GENRE, with certain musical elements that are required!!!!!

Dom is much more eloquent than me. Sorry.

Frogm@n Henry, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

OK, then.

The best hip-hop albums ever made:

1. Genesis: Selling England By The Pound
2. XTC: Skylarking
3. Depeche Mode: Contruction Time Again
4. Genesis: Foxtrot

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

They aren't shit. They are brilliant. Beautiful highly melodic songs that you can sing along to and get happy from. And lots of musical sophistication that you will be able to enjoy in any situation, not just on the dancefloor, like the less worthy rhythm crap you enjoy.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

are you rocking back and forth?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Other than the chronology, Coldplay and Travis fit with every single of the criteria that Britpop acts have in common. Travis even started out as Oasis copycats on their debut album.

Coldplay and Travis are being called Britpop a lot in the press too, and not just because they are "British Pop"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Geir, no way is Phantom Power SFA's second best. Fuzzy Logic and Guerilla beat it easily.

Also, whilst I agree that for the large part your list is crap, a couple of things that missed out which I think do and should qualify under your criteria are The Great Eastern by the Delgados and something by Ash, who still seem to operate vaguely near their best.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand the intonation of your last picture, dom. could you explain, albeit melodiclly.

MALE CATEGORY THOUGH WIBBLE WIBBLLE

Masked Geir, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

only 20 records fit your criteria. luckily, you have them all in your list

Plus Suede, Pulp, Gene, Ocean Colour Scene, Shed Seven, Northern Uproar, Embrace, Strangelove, Octopus, Cast, Kula Shaker, Sleeper, Echobelly, Geneva, Mansun, Silver Sun, Ash, Longpigs, Elastica, Stereophonics, Starsailor, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs and Thirteen Senses, all of which meet perfectly with the Britpop criteria, none of which are represented in the list at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

The Gliteratti
The Ordinary Boys.
The Libertines
Kasabian
The Killers
The Raveonettes,

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Ash are definitely a band with no US musical influences though Geir, you got that one right.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Ash sound a lot like a bunch of current American bands influenced by English punk from the 70s.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

20.Oasis: Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants WHAT?! Over Definitely Maybe?! Thats a rare opinion, I'm honestly pretty shocked, but hey, more power to ya, at least its good to see someone still likes that album (infinitely better than Be Here Now, and better than Heathen CHem)

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Only indirectly, what slight American influences the beat bands of the 60s had.

Can I say Ivor Cutler? I haven't said that for a long time.

Ivor Cutler is insufficiently melodic and English.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Now, These albums I can imagine SMASHing before they finish playing.

1. Dodgy: Free Peace Sweet
3. Dodgy: Homegrown

6. Travis: The Man Who
13.Supernaturals: It Doesn't Matter Anymore
15.Keane: Hopes And Fears
17.Supergrass: Life On Other Planets
18.Athlete: Tourist
19.Travis: 12 Memories

These I'd let finish, then SMASH
8. Electric Soft Parade: Holes In The Wall
9. Blur: The Great Escape
12.Coldplay: Parachutes
20.Oasis: Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants
16.Coldplay: Rush Of Blood To The Head

5. Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power
7. Doves: The Last Broadcast
10.Super Furry Animals: Rings Around The World
11.Blur: Parklife
14.Oasis: (What's The Story) Morning Glory

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

(Xpost yeah, but we're not on Engpop?)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Ivor Cutler is hardly using guitars.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

This was my Britpop, according to my own definition of it and no-one else's. Nothing before 93, nothing after 99.

I found that dropping perfectly good albums from this list because they weren't sufficiently "Britpop" enough to be a somewhat degrading process, but still.

1. different class - pulp
2. dog man star - suede
3. tiger bay - saint etienne
4. urban hymns - the verve
5. grand prix - teenage fanclub
6. elastica - elastica
7. the three e.p.'s - beta band
8. coming up - suede
9. definitely maybe - oasis
10. parklife - blur
11. everything must go - manic street preachers
12. suede - suede
13. so tough - saint etienne
14. it's great when you're straight... yeah! - black grape
15. h.m.s. fable - shack
16. guerilla - super furry animals
17. this is hardcore - pulp
18. (what's the story) morning glory - oasis
19. stanley road - paul weller
20. tellin' stories - the charlatans
21. when i was born for the 7th time - cornershop
22. casanova - the divine comedy
23. bring it on - gomez
24. wild wood - paul weller
25. attack of the grey lantern - mansun

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

This was my Britpop, according to my own definition of it and no-one else's. Nothing before 93, nothing after 99.

I would say most of the albums fit somewhat. Apart from Weller, they are all part of the same generation, although I find Saint Etienne, Beta Band and Black Grape a bit different from Britpop musically.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I can live with that last list in its entirety.

Yeah!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

The thing is that I'm not even sure Dog Man Star and This is Hardcore are really Britpop either. It's a hard genre to define. Is Everything will Go Britpop?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Well, y'see, my Britpop encouraged diversity and invention, not genre-based restriction. Which is where the likes of Ocean Colour Scene and Cast fail: you can hear them straining to conform to some sort of received notion of what they "should" be doing, and the respect they show to their influences is too pronounced. (Meanwhile, Oasis were so blatantly and shamelessly stealing ideas from their big influences that it was somehow possible to admire them for their cheek...)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Whoever is wearing his influences clearly should be admired for that. There nothing wrong with praising the past, particularly not if you do it as a protest against the present.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

As Hitler did with the age of the Teutonic Knights.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm going with Britpop as 93 to 97, but consider Dog Man Star - and also The Holy Bible/ Everything Must Go/ Dummy/ The Bends/ McAlmont and Butler - as non-Britpop albums. This is Hardcore... def. a post-Britpop album. These are what I think of when I think Britpop

1) Suede
2) Different Class
3) Coming Up
4) Parklife
5) Tiger Bay
6) The Masterplan
7) The It Girl
8) Modern Life is Rubbish
9) Elastica
10) Smart

I think these are the classics of the period - maybe add Def. Maybe and Expecting to Fly by the Bluetones.
8)

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

is this a thread abt rockism?

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

1. Cardiacs - On Land And In The Sea
2. Kirsty MacColl - Electric Landlady
3. CUD - When In Rome, Kill Me
4. Doctor Feelgood - Doctor's Orders
5. BMX Bandits - Star Wars
6. Elvis Costello - Punch The Clock
7. Marc Riley and the Creepers - Warts 'n' All
8. Neil - Heavy Concept Album

I'd say Edwyn's Brit-pop statement is "I'm Not Following You". It even includes a nice a tirade against the whole movement or whatever it was - it's surely not a musical genre.

"Taking back the union jack, my arse" as he says.

because I cant find the other thread:
that people still actually remember Dog Man Star exists makes me all fuzzy. but suede were like a strange obssession for me as a kid so I think its more nostaglia than anything else. I gave up hope after bernard butler left, & I agree that ed buller's production on DMS sucked but he more than made up for it with what followed. but I still have the DMS poster from select mag on my wall. and "the tears" is definitely a sign of impending apocalypse. *cringe*

also as far as the auteurs, luke haines is a genius, but "new wave" was DEFINITELY a britpop album - you would be hardpressed to convince me otherwise.

No Pulp, no Suede. Both were great, but not quite as great as lots of the other acts here.

Pulp is not quite as great as.....TRAVIS?!

Oh Geir...you're such a funny little robot.
