The new ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead album, "Source Tags and Codes", is available on Audiogalaxy. Simply put, it is my favourite hard rock album in ages. Anyone else heard it?

For the interested, the tracklist is at breakstuff.org.

BTW, are you aware that audiogalaxy hides spyware in your computer to track your web activity, online-based email, etc... AND is the cause for those ANNOYING POPUPS when you go to Yahoo, Google, etc.? Those sites don't have pop ups. I would delete the software pronto if I was you.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.. and to do so you .. ?

Dare, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Short and simple: Audiogalaxy installs a program onto your computer (VX2.dll) without your knowledge that essentially monitors you computer for a company and sends data to them that monitors all of the activity in your internet explorer browser, or in other words, spyware. In turn, this program works with another program on your computer that audiogalaxy installs (onflow) that causes pop-up windows to pop up anytime you load a site like yahoo or hotmail and so on. It also sends copy's of any e-mails you use on web-baced e-mail accounts to the company and in turn, they sell your e-mail address to spammers.

The first song off of this album makes me want to an essay about how rock 'n roll it is. and it goes on from there. i think nude as news already has a review of it up and i've heard the guy from Explosions in the Sky said that he got on CD-R a couple months ago and it hasn't left his CD player since he got it. All of that being said, it just seems like they needed a large studio and lots of time to construct this fantastic piece of work. One example of how not to sell out. And the best thing about the situation? Fred Durst is the Vice President of the label.

Flat out the best rock 'n roll release of 2002.*

*so far. :)

Spock, I had heard such things before but I was unaware that it is (supposedly - I'm not so trusting of you internet folk) true. Either way, those minute little adverts don't really bother me that much anyway. I've never once seen a pop-up when using Google or Lycos, BTW.

Simon H., Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, I've been using AG for 5 or 6 months now. I've been using Lycos Mail longer than that, and I don't get any spam, though I send many emails.

Simon H., Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

new trail of dead is a step in a good direction for the boys from austin. you can tell the production values have gone up dramatically. the EP shows that even more so with some of the sound noodlings they have been partaking in. the last song on the EP is a really intresting drone piece that is worth checking out. i do miss the more screamy side of the band though. they really don't belt it out as much as they did on Madonna. but it they sacrifice that for more indepth lyrics i guess.

as far as AG goes, i've certainly noticed the increase in pop-ups since i started using the program. and that article pretty much pinpoints where it is coming from.

BTW, "copy's" and "web-baced" are the kind of type-o's I get when I copy + paste someone else's entire paragraph. And, furthermore, this thread has convinced me, along with the "richter scale madness" mp3 I downloaded, to go out and get the Trail of Dead releases. I've been meaning to ever since someone said they were probably what you'd consider today's good-era Sonic Youth. Thanks for bringing it up again.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have something called AD-WATCH installed. It automatically erases any Spyware in real-time as it encounters them. If some make it to my computer (through having them prior to installing Ad-Watch) I can use it to search for any general spyware and erase them. I d/l Audiogalaxy without those components.

Kodanshi, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Norton provides an internet protector that provides simillar services as above. (But sadly no Trail of the Dead album)

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Trail of Dead album is incredible. And it's not even one of those that grows on you. Four songs in and I was already blown away. Haven't stopped listening to it for weeks.

Yancey, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So, they're going to release it on cd, aren't they, or is this a new way to release music as "audiogalaxy-only"?

Nude Spock, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's supposed to come out in early February on Interscope, Spock.

Having listened to the album many times now, it still holds up really well. I noticed that 10 of the 11 tracks have either horns, strings or piano on them, and not in a "ooh, we're being epic" Metallica sort of way - unusual for a rock record. The whole record flows really well, much moreso than their last one. If I have any nitpick it's that several of the songs' endings are overlong, and somewhat similar to the others.

Best track: 'Heart in the Hand of the Matter' - something about it really gets to me. 'Nothing can be done, we've lost all control...'

Worst track: 'Homage', which was also on the 'Relative Ways' EP. It's the loudest song on the record (sligtly harder than the ace 'Days of Being Wild) but something about it rubs me the wrong way.

Best single prospect: 'Baudelaire', which is by far the catchiest song they've ever written.

Simon H., Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I love "Homage." I love it for the volume.

When I first heard "Baudelaire" I thought single. If Interscope handles it right, it could happen. But I've been told by several folks that Interscope is not going to be pushing this album. They want a critical success with this one, then try to go huge with the next album. But this is a huge album. They could make this happen, although I think the Trail of Dead guys would pull a Replacements and do everything they could to fuck it up.

My favorite track: Source Tags and Codes, the last song. I can't stop listening to it.

Yancey, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The last album, Madonna, didn't do anything for me. I kept reading good things about the EP but it took this thread to motivate me-- thanks, guys. It's definitely hella good, as are the new songs I've downloaded. They've always sounded like a mishmash of a dozen different 90's indie rock bands but now they're doing it better--not Sonic Youth as much as everyone says. More tuneful bands--SF Seals or Silkworm or almost any Matador band of that period. I've been missing that stuff lately and it's nice to hear it done well again.

adam, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
the music on the new trail of dead record has been done about a hundred thousand times before (and much better at that). it's unoriginal, uncatchy, unmelodic, doesn't rock particularly hard, and the vocals are devoid of any semblance of character or skill whatsoever. the hype (e.g. 10 on pitchfork) is embarassing...even more so than that which existed around the strokes, who at least had one or two slightly catchy songs.

Alex T., Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best single prospect: 'Baudelaire', which is by far the catchiest song they've ever written.

I do like that song, most varied on the album. Well nothing comes close to Mark David Chapman or Clair Du Lune its still not a bad album, sligthly more expensive (some say better) production but no new ground, then again nothing like treading water exactly. Its a shame their movement fanatics are already screaming sellout. Sigh.

Mr Noodles, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four weeks pass...
I have to respectfully disagree with Alex's claims about this stuff being "unmelodic." I'm not much of a hard rock fan, but this is the first mainstream hard rock record that has grabbed me in any way since "In Utero," mostly because it IS melodic. To me it sounds like Britpop melodies set to crushingly loud rock. Conrad is one hell of a singer. After hearing one awful soundalike nu-metal band after another, "Source Tags and Codes" is doubly inspiring.

Stan Hall, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock and melody..how better can it get? What an album..right off the bat gave it an A. Great lyrics as well. Better than Madonna..and that's a lot to say.

Juan Edgardo, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock and melody..how better can it get?

Essentially meaning the Beatles define everything. I must disagree.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A great record. The uk version has a different opening track which leads nicely into 'It was there I saw you'. All 3 of their releases have been top notch. By far, the premier rock band out there.

vantasma, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight years pass...

new album is quite good

calstars, Saturday, 29 January 2011 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

acoleuthic, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

i'm probably about ready to give them another go after not listening to any of their new music for the last 5 years or so.

charlie h, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

'Inland Sea' from their last one floored me but i think I was alone?

Inadvertently seen them half a dozen times and ony once on purpose. The best band in the festival line up at the time .Not a favourite then, but always pleased to have the around.

i love these guys. kinda don't understand the weird stigma. new album is so good

sleepingbag, Saturday, 29 January 2011 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

this is actually good...or am i just projecting my enjoyment onto it because i want to love an album with that album cover?? nah it's actually good so far

ciderpress, Monday, 31 January 2011 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

i think the only stigma is they made a badass record and then followed it up with a couple way less badass ones so everyone figured they were done as a Good Band

ciderpress, Monday, 31 January 2011 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

They were just way better when they worshipped Sonic Youth, rather than uhh Queen or something. Yuck.

Evan, Monday, 31 January 2011 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

New one's easily their best since ST&C - with a more visceral production job it might even rival it. Shame about the standard "modern-rock" style, vocals-up-front sound. Still, progress! These guys are insanely resilient.

Simon H., Monday, 31 January 2011 08:31 (fifteen years ago)

People talking about Lycos and Audiogalaxy ITT.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Monday, 31 January 2011 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

Summer of All Dead Souls sounds like Oasis.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 January 2011 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

Cover reminds me of Michael Jackson's Dangerous, especially the eyes looking out from under the band name.

seminal fuiud (NickB), Monday, 31 January 2011 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of TOD's stuff sounds like Oasis put through a weird filter until it really is as anthemic and epic as the Gallaghers wanted it to be, imo

acoleuthic, Monday, 31 January 2011 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

so....um....fellas...about this new album cover...

I think the question is, who are those people?

blackcoffeeredsun, Friday, 4 February 2011 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

Back: Courtney Love
2nd row l-r: Henry Rollins, Thurston Moore
3rd row l-r: a fox, Joanna Newsom, two members of Cute Is What We Aim For, Bjork
Bottom l-r: Taylor Swift, Conrad Keely, Pippi Longstocking

acoleuthic, Friday, 4 February 2011 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

the last record was a nice treat, but this one is def. an improvement, and def. their best since ST&C.

borntohula, Friday, 4 February 2011 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

I like the little boy on the bottom's horror-flick stare

blackcoffeeredsun, Friday, 4 February 2011 03:30 (fifteen years ago)
