... pretty underwhelming
or is just me?

brokenfuses (brokenfuses), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

it was kind of hilarious spotting the hipsters in the audience who were trying really hard to make sure the camera caught them mouthing the words and intensely nodding their heads to the music.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I guess she really is a bad dancer. I'm wondering if she was very nervous.

Jimmy Kimmel had no idea what he was saying when he was introducing her.

Al is also very OTM.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Spencer was in that crowd!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

yes, maybe he was doing his famous move.

JKL has maybe the worst production values I've ever seen on network television. wtf was up with all that zooming in and out, it was like Soul Train in the '80's. if I was in a band that had never been on TV before and got an offer to be on Kimmel, I'd be like, c'mon guys, let's hold out for Conan. or even the guy who replaced Kilborn.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah when Joanna Newsom was on JK the atmosphere for the performance was ok, and she killed, but right after the hush and slight applause after her last note the announcer starts bellowing his commercial bumper totally shitting on the moment; I've never seen anything so crass, even Arsenio used to wait til the applause had set in properly before he jumped all over the performer.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

what song did she sing btw? I need lots of incentive, she kind of underwhelmed me in person.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Haven't seen it yet, but this hipster was right in front mouthing the words because I was moved to!!! Seeing it on the west coast in about 10 mins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

Grr, they didn't broadcast "Galang", and the camera work was really annoying. Also, why did they keep showing that dork in the blue shirt when I was standing 5 feet from him! Still, a really great performance!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

For the record, they broadcast "Bucky Done Gone" which may be the first baile funk influenced track ever played on American network TV.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

yet it still sucked

charleston charge (chaki), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

She was dressed so retardedly. Her hype girl was so ridiculously FOINE omg.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

what's kimmel?

(uk res.)

piscesboy, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

late night tv program hosted by the irritating jimmy kimmel.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Her hype girl is great. The only thing interesting about her live show. Someone give that girl a record deal!

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Is this anywheres on the innernet cuz I sleep at night.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

http://www.prefixblog.com

Cancel Robot, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

EVEN ARSENIO

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought you guys were being harsh with that Soul Train thing. Then I watched the clip. Jesus. It was really good until they let the tweaker run the camera.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

The camera dude was like smoking PCP trying to MTV the fucker up or something, gawd.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Kimmel needs get off the boozer

Al again OTM about the hipsters (haha that dude just flowin' his arms). They jerked the camera to make the audience look more animated. That was some sub-"Dance Machine with Nia Peeples" shit. She's no Corina.

Less embarassing than the New Order "Love Will Tear Us Apart" deal.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

man it was giving me flashbacks to MTV'S THE GRIND hosted by ERIC NIES

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

"man, are you sure we have to do Kimmel? isn't there a public access talk show somewhere in the midwest we could get booked?"

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I have nothing but sympathy for Jimmy, though, re: having to say the words "bucky done gun" on national television.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

What the world needs is an apocalyptic Downtown Julie Brown...

and Candicissima otm about the hype girl.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

oh I have no sympathy for Kimmel after the New Order thing. Dude proves stuttering wasn't Colin Quinn's only problem.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

And I sincerely miss The Grind

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I watch Soul Train most weekends. Outfits aside, it's more tasteful than this.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's why I said ST in the 80's. if memory serves I think their camerawork is more tasteful than it used to be (and more than Kimmel's is now).

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

It appears the link is down already. Ahh well. What did Jimmy say after the performance?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

What did Jimmy say after the performance?

Never again will I let the nineteen year old PA tell me what act to book on my show.

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

God, some of you people are a bunch of miserable, negative jerks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I love you all, but still...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

amused, negative jerks maybe

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Did you get any screen time, Spencer? I forgot to look for you. I also think she's not a very good dancer, but the camera work just about ruined the performance. I was debating listening but not watching, but decided the visuals were part of it.

Also, did anyone watch Oprah afterwards? Yeow!

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

is Arular really pronounced like "a ruler"?

guy in the chambray shirt gets hella screen time.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm in for half a second and only when the camera is panning quickly. The Oprah thing was CRAZY.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Okay, someone help reign in my runaway imagination (which is giving me images of a topless oprah giving Jimmy Kimmel a lap dance) and tell me what was so crazy about Oprah.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I wish M.I.A. was on Oprah instead. She could talk about how her dad's a terrorist for the 8 billionth time and then she could cry a little and Oprah would comfort her and then FREEE COPIES OF "PIRACY FUNDS TERRORISM" FOR EEEEVVERRRYOONNNEE!!! FREEE COPIES OF "PIRACY FUNDS TERRORISM" FOR EEEEVVERRRYOONNNEE!!!

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

We're talking about Oprah on ILE! COme join us!

X-PAT (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

We must divert all energy and funds to making n/a's scenario come true.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

is Arular really pronounced like "a ruler"?

In my head, I've always pronounced it AR-yoo-LAR. For no particular reason, I guess.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

No, like a pirate.

"ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Yuller."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

it's pronounced eh-ree-oh-lah

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Can this be true? (Arular #2 Hip Hop seller on E-bay - was #1 earlier today...

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

what happened on oprah?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

also, the daft punk video on that site is pretty sweet.

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Oprah had a doctor on that told us more than we wanted to know about the digestive tract. With props.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

haha - poor queen latifah

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

omg that chart rules - DAVE KOZ????

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

yes - SMALLVILLE OST - I LOVE HIPHOP!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

She sounds like my annoying neighbor who screams ESL all day.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, english is probably her second language too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 May 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

damn that was painful.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 5 May 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

**rerun of this episode is on tonight if you're interested**

PB, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

God, that was awful.

1.) No. Stage. Presence. At. All.
2.) The "London" bridge thingee is awful.
3.) What is the meaning of that fly girl? Is she M.I.A.'s Flav? Why is there just one? And why can't she dance? I don't get this.
4.) Those audience members were icky.

Just completely terrible.

PB, Thursday, 19 May 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

her singer is great you wingnut

amoeba has been listing it as in their top 10 albums list for a while now...

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 19 May 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

holy shit that diplo thumbs-up is hilarious

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 19 May 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to be so unhip, but is "Galang" a bad word or something? Why does it keep getting bleeped out on TV? What does it mean?

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 19 May 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Her show at the Echo on Tues was *astonishing*!

Also PB, I'm sure you would have been a much cooler audience member.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

galang means middle finger

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

actually, i have no idea what it means. i just also wonder why they blur middle fingers on tv. it's a finger, not a penis.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

...and a nipple's just a darkened protuberance!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes a penis can substitute for a finger.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Mightier than the sword?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

YOU KNOW IT

The Ghost of MONSTROUS THUNDERCOCK (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Ohhh, this is the kind of dance music that gets good reviews! The kind that's horribly awkward and noone can dance too, including the person that made the song!

clamoring, Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

you haven't been out much lately have you

jones (actual), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

If you can't dance to "Bucky Done Gun", you are either:

a) hopeless;
b) legless;
c) dead.

I'm really, really tired of people who can't dance blaming the music for their own lack of skill. YOU CAN DANCE TO ANYTHING, PEOPLE.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm dancing to dan's irritation right now!!

jones (actual), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

is the performance available online anywhere? Surely some MIA obsessive copied it

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Her voice is very weak.

PB, Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

nevermind, found a torrent. That was truly awful and I normally love the song.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

it WAS available on prefixblog.com a while back, but it might be gone now.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

hip hop is kind of scary to the indie kids still

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, so they listen to MIA instead.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Also PB, I'm sure you would have been a much cooler audience member.

-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), May 19th, 2005.

I probably would NOT have been making "Glad Hands" intepretive gestures like that one Corky-from-Life-Goes-On kid.....

PB, Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

haha was he retarded?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Haha yeah, I didn't get why they were focusing on him at all. Again, the camera movements were out of control and the sound was weird. It was great in person.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

YOU CAN DANCE TO ANYTHING, PEOPLE.

You can leave your friends behind, even.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

This is amusing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Reality is but a dream.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the camera work here is a bit early-80s "creative" -- that must have looked terrible on television. For some reason she sounds way way more subcontinental here than she does on record.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

i love how randy has his address spam-proofed

jones (actual), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Definitely brief flashes of Spencer Chow in that clip, but the camera(man) loves down syndrome guy. I think maybe they thought he resembled their target audience.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 19 May 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha, good point! I felt kind of stiff and overdressed - stage or MIA fright.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 May 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)
