it may seem silly to ask about something this mundane but i always wanna know. There's this certain "glass" sound that can be heard in many Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions. You can hear it in SOS bands "The finest" Janet Jacksons "Control" and Cameo "Candy". How was it created?

jam and lewis produced candy?

i know that song inside and out and i don't know which keyb line you are talking about. the long high line or one of the more staccato runs?

no not a keyboard sound but a drum machine sound, theres this certain "glass sound" that comes from a drum machine of some sort.

as in the whole drum pallette sounds "glassy" or there is one particular sound that sounds like glass (breaking?)? you're pretty inarticulate for a formalist.

great snares on candy, btw. POCCH!!

maybe it's a "linn." isn't that what everyone used, back then?

Are you thinking of a kind of crystalline "ping" sound? (Like flicking crystal and letting it ring?) A whole lot of drum machines and beat boxes have a sound that fits that description -- usually a digital "conga." If I remember right the 808 and Linn both have a high conga that pings like that.

I agree - I think it's the 808 conga startrekman's talking about. J&L used it a lot on their productions around this time.

is it run through a delay or reverb of some kind.

I couldna been an 808, it sounds too digital.

two years pass...

The Cherelle "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" thread has thrown me into an extravaganza of Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis appreciation. That and the fact that on the drive home last night, I was lucky enough to hear Janet Jackson's "Nasty" blaring out of a car on the highway. I had completely forgotten about Janet's stuff in the late 80's and how much I wanted to buy her albums back then but didn't do it because I guess it wasn't cool in my circle of friends...although I did buy Jody Watley's album from around the same time so I can't figure it out now. Anyway. I still love Human League's "Human" even though I know a lot of people hate that.

And watching Janet's old videos again on You Tube has just been the ultimate blast for me.

I want to hear more of the Jam/Lewis thing.

Flyte Tyme were the secret heroes of '80s Top 40 radio. Aside from Janet, they had a hand in a dozen stone-classic singles. Just off the top of my head: Force MDs' "Tender Love," SOS Band's "Just Be Good to Me," Alexander O'Neal's "Fake," Karyn White's "I'm Your Woman," Johnny Gill's "Rub You the Right Way,"
