completely insane diva suggestions for mixed cd + needing Grace Jones rare remix

Making a mixed cd for a friend and am running out of ideas. I'm including

Mu - Haters
Antony and the Johnsons - "My Lady's Story"
Ellen Allien - "Open"
Grace Jones - "She's Lost Control cover" - thank u phil
Cinematic Orchestra w/ Fontella Bass - "All that You Give"

If anyone has a digital copy of Grace Jones' "Feel Up" -remixed by Larry Levan?? This is from Grace Jones Rare 12" Mixes - and I believe was only available on vinyl. My copy was printed off center and skips.

I'm looking for tracks that are over the top but listenable/enjoyable - styles (and genders) can vary wildly (already don't have a pattern going there).

recommendations greatly appreciated

Well, if you like something a bit different, try Art Ensemble of Chicago's "Theme de yoyo" (with Fontella Bass on vocals) - diva funk meets free jazz!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Also worth a listen:

Red Snapper: "The Rough and the Quick" (basically, diva house played live, ending with a fake orgasm)

Flora Purim: "Moon Dreams" (this starts kinda slow, but Flora's shrieks towards the end are quite something)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

ok i'm definitely getting excited

DJ Hell & Billy Ray Martin - "Je Regrette Everything"

The original ("She Regrets" on his NY Muscle album) and Jesper Dählback's remix have a lot of diva-vocals, the Superpitcher remix only uses a small fraction of it and is probably (though terrific!) less suitable for your mix.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer it sounds so good i want to stay up all nite finding out about the various ways loud and soft that divas go insane. is there a database besides itunes (which i'm guessing wont' have this stuff) where i can find lesser known stuff and purchase songs individually - or is everythign at this point either filesharing or buying the whole album?

also curiuos about non-campy divas - like divas that go insane but remain completely sincere and personal about it almost to the point of scaring you. i don't have an example but the idea intrigues me.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

if you're interested i could e-mail the files i mentioned. and make sure you report back when you've completed your mix!

willem (willem), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

linda jones. completely insane. try her version of for your precious love.

unless you mean like the vcl house sense of the word diva

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Cornelius feat. Ellie - '69/96 A SPACE ODYSSEY ?PRELUDE (IN ATAMI)' (short as it's an intro, but histrionics galore).
Basement Jaxx feat. Totlyn Jackson - 'Supersonic'
DJ Falcon - 'Honeymoon' (sampled diva, sorta restrained-crazy, but totally wonderful filter disco)
Javine - 'Best Of My Love' (well, some like it and beisdes she tried to steal my pen once. Totally DIVA)

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Some more Billie Ray Martin for you: "Persuasion" (with Spooky).

"I've got a little biscuit tin
to keep your panties in
soiled panties, white panties, school panties, y-front panties"

xpost - thx willem pls email to me if you get a chance.

i'm going to try and get my hands on everything. thx everyone who replied! if anyone would like to add anything i probably won't be done tune-picking till next week as I think it'll take me awhile to find samples of all these songs. I'll post my mix when i'm done tho. merci

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

this mixtape sounds like it'll be awesome when it's done. I second 'Best Of My Love' by Javine btw, and look! here it is!

other suggestions:

Björk - Pluto (hardcore squawking over headache beats but bizarrely very catchy and danceable)
Trina ft. Ludacris - B R Right (the rudest song in the history of music, do not play closing monologue in front of your mother)
Tori Amos - Datura (eight-minute psychotropic loop of radio sounds, a dirty piano riff, electro beats, druggy synth swirls and Tori reciting a list of sexually suggestive plant names)
Christina Aguilera - Make Over (take tune of 'Overload' by the Sugababes; add Xtina's OTT vocal, hysterical treated strings and relentless castanet action)
Miss Kittin ft. LA Williams - Requiem For A Hit ("I'll beat that bitch with a hit! I'll beat that bitch with a hit!" etc. Oh, and Miss K singing booty bass)
Lady Fury - Murk Dem (16-yr-old (at the time) grime MC murks boys goth style over Hitchcockian strings - "I'll snatch your heart and drink your blood", "watch your souls go straight below")

crikey moses!

thx Alex!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

You definitely need to hear "Noir Désir" by Vive La Fête! It's in French, but you don't have to understand the lyrics to get that this woman is insanely and hysterically pissed. Plus it's got an incredibly catchy synthpop tune.

You might want to put a Diamanda Gallas track on there too, maybe "Double-Barrel Prayer". It's a little more accessible, but she still sounds like a possesed woman with a bat stuck inside her throat.

Seb (Seb), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Diamanda Galás was the first diva who came to mind when I saw this thread but I got stuck on the 'listenable' bit. Another Galás suggestion might be 'Aman', the song she did with Khan, where she tones down the elements of her own songs which make you want to hide under the bed, but is still very creepy.

also off that Khan album (No Comprendo) - the Françoise Cactus collaboration 'Les Gros Nichons' (drunken rant about how she wants breasts like balloons) and the Hanin Elias collaboration 'The Bee' (electropop noise which darts all over the place with lots of sexual metaphors)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

oh! and 'Troy' by Sinéad O'Connor.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

"BEEEEEEEEEE!"

"I.M.!"

"BEEEEEEEEEE!"

"I.M.!"

*pyyyyyyyyyyyooooooooooooooo*

"DO THE BIIIIIM!"

(if you can rent The Apple DVD and record the first song, that would be the perfect intro for your mix CD)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Yma Sumac - Chuncho
Meredith Monk - Gotham Lullaby
Kate Bush - Ken (From The Comic Strip Film 'Glc')
The Dresden Dolls - Bad Habit

Maria Callas needs to be on this. I have no idea what the piece is called (I am an opera know-nothing) but it's one of her last ever, ever performances. I saw it on TV and damn nearly fell off the couch in shock!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

"Feel What You Want" - Kristine W.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

"Troy" is a great suggestion!
Also check out:
- Golden Boy with Miss Kittin - "Rippin Kittin"
- Adult. - "Nausea (Reconstructed)"
- Swayzak - "I dance alone"
- Yoko Ono - "Walking On Thin Ice"
- Liza Minelli - "Losing My Mind"
- Garbage - "I Think I'm Paranoid"
- Madonna - "Mer Girl"
- Portishead - "Sour Times"
- Hole - "Violet"
- PJ Harvey - "Rid Of Me"

And for "divas that go insane but remain completely sincere and personal about it" you could try Mylène Farmer's "Sans Logique", "Comme J'ai Mal" or "A Quoi Je Sers". They're in French too, but they're great songs.

Seb (Seb), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

persuasion is a throbbing gristle track

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Klaus Nomi - "Total Eclipse"
Arthur Brown - "Fire" (if that's not too obvious)

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

There is in fact a soundtrack LP for "The Apple"...

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Mike-t-Diva & Willem-- i am totally in awe of Zarah and Je Regrette (esp. Jesper Dahlbeck remix). thk you, these are perfect

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Susan, if you're still doing this, I'd recommend "He Was a Big Freak" by Betty Davis. It is an S/M themed (sample lyrics: "he was a big freak / I used to whip him with my turquoise chain") soul tune from 1973 with totally over the top vocals. Betty Davis used to be married to Miles Davis and she dated Jimi Hendrix, it is unclear whether this song is about either of them. Other songs in Davis' regrettably small discography are worth checking out as well.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

What about male divas? If so Armand Van Helden's "Flowerz" obv

Jennifer Hudson singing "I Have Nothing"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 May 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
i finally was able to rip from vinyl - Grace Jones' (Larry Levan mixed) "Feel Up".

here: http://s29.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=23FX9TUSJAE9V1GGF8FDXBTC4V

as far as my mixtape goes - I"m still working on it (ugh) but I threw out a lot of stuff that months later realized didn't have staying-power and am still undecided on others (like Mu and Antony - which i think i'll keep)

these are the ones i'm def. keeping:
Troy - Sinead
Watching you Without Me - Kate Bush
Zarah - Nina Hagen
No Easy Way Down - Mark Eitzel
She's Lost Control - Grace Jones
Open - Ellen Allien

its been hard to find and fit appropriate sultry slow-burning diva-songs alongside the flambeed ones but i definitely need to do this as otherwise thing becomes unlistenable.

Enjoy Grace. If I get a better quality rip of this, I'll post again.
