What artist/band biopics would you like to see?

OK, so we've had The Doors, we've had the Factory years, there's an Ian Curtis biopic in the works, there's been a movie about the Beatles' early years, etc., etc. Skating delicately over the fact that pop/rock biopics tend to be pretty awful, what biopics would you like to see? Pitch your biopic idea here!

Bob Log III, people would think it was a sequel, or a spoof, like Leonard Part 6. Ergo, it would be awesome.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

anything starring Lou Diamond Phillips

A Billy Mackenzie one would be great but wouldn't be able to capture the joie de vivre -- they'd film everything through a lens of 'but he DIED! by his OWN HAND!' and have there be dark shadows and gloom throughout. Lame.

B-52's. I've read and reread 'Party Out Of Bounds' - poorly written though it is - partly because the story of these oddballs creating their own entertainment in the late-glitter, early-punk era in the small-town South creates such a vivid mental cinema for me.

I wish they'd make a series of Pop Stars vs Monsters movies in the vein of Bubba Ho-Tep.
Little Richard vs Mothra
Greg Allman vs Candyman
Vanessa Paradis vs the Blob

Huk-L, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

This is a dream. But why Paradis?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Jaco Pastorius. His biography was one of the saddest, most touching music-related books I've ever read.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

The Monks! Based on the "Black Monk Time" book...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

B-52s would indeed make great cinema.

For sociohistorical interest, though, I'd really like to see Sly Stone bio'ed. (Anyone know how he's faring these days?)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost Sly and the Family Stone around the making of 'There's a riot goin' on'

Michael B, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, third that one!

The Fleetwood Mac story would seem to have all the elements.

brianiac (briania), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

A Pixar adaptation of the Leif Garrett story.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Butthole Surfers

Wu Tang Clan and it's 23 possible sequels and prequels.
Velvet Underground... directed by Jonas Akerlund.

One on Arthur Lee and Love.

Allen Toussaint deserves, like, three hours.

A really good, tough-minded biopic of James Brown, of course.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

The Replacements

Although, now they'd have to give it a different title because of that stupid Keanu football movie.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Archers of Loaf

CrookedCancer, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Phil Ochs (and they can call it "Chords of Fame")

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

sam cooke

Sam Cooke...good one. Also Otis Redding.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I thought I heard that there was a Monks movie happening, but maybe i was dreaming... Black Monk Time would definitely make a good flick.

and whatever happened to the Shaggs one?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Pat Martino

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

from a note by eddie shaw on the monks' website:
"I received a call, in 1994, from a movie producer asking if I would write a book about the monks ... A number of scripts have been written by different script writers and are still being developed. The option is renewed every year. As I have found out, it takes a long time to make a movie."

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Phil Ochs (and they can call it "Chords of Fame")

Obviously I will see this movie FIVE HUNDRED TIMES. Why does it not exist?

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Sun Ra.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 2 November 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Marvin Gaye is the obvious choice. There are now two biopics in the works, but neither of them seem to be leaving the pre-production stage.

musically, Friday, 2 November 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

Karlheinz Stockhausen, directed, produced and scripted by the man himself.

Matt #2, Friday, 2 November 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sammy Davis Jr, by a mile

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 November 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

Phil Ochs (and they can call it "Chords of Fame")

Obviously I will see this movie FIVE HUNDRED TIMES. Why does it not exist?

Apparently this was already made: Phil Ochs on Film. Would love to see it if anyone knows where to find it. Sean Penn intended on making his own version at one point too.

dad a, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

One on Beefheart would be fun. I think his life, as I remember from the books and the bbc doc, has enough ups and downs and wild characters and coincidences that would make it so.

city worker, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Judee Sill.

Trip Maker, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

Swamp Dogg the Musical

people explosion, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Keith Moon. Some hilarious events that would make a great movie.
