What do you always look for at the CD store?

Related to the used-bin thread: I realized I always notice the same used CDs in the bins because I always look for the same artists at first.

So, what CDs/artists do you always look for when you go shopping?

I always look for Boredoms because once I found a used copy of one of the Super Roots albums, and now I look every time I go (and have not since found anything I didn't already have). Also, Magma (saw once, never again, made me look every time since), and Ruins (saw once, etc.).

I love the word "bin" as a receptacle-for-CDs word.

I just browse randomly. I've tried to keep wants lists sometimes but I always get shop blindness and forget everything on them, and I never remember to take the lists themselves or I look at them and realise I'm not in the mood for anything on there, etc. etc.

Dominique -- Where do you live? When I lived in San Francisco I used to shop at Amoeba on Haight, and they had like 15 used Boredoms CDs at any given time. This was pre-Super Ae, so I hadn't tuned in to what they were doing (I'm still not crazy about the old stuff). I bought a Super Roots and Pop Tatari there, I know that. But they had rarities, side projects (this is where I bought Audio Sports, used) the whole enchilada. I miss that place...

Lately when I go used LP shopping I always find myself flipping through the Ks, looking for Kraftwerk, even though I basically have all of them (I’m missing the second album). A few months ago I found Electric Cafe used on vinyl, and it hooked me.

I also always look for Boredoms, so I’m glad we don’t live near each other. It could get ugly.

I keep a very extensive typed out list of music i'm looking for, and i just go right down it, holding it in front of me at the store. That's why i'm a music dork.

If they have a new arrivals section, I check there first. (Insert joke about band named New Arrivals.)

I keep an eye out for cute girls at the record store.

Oliver, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember keeping an eye out for the first self-titled Braaxtaal CD for some time, before I finally picked up a copy at one of their all- too-rare State-side shows. Currently, looking for the Carter Family series on Rounder, most of which are out of print, and the Art Bears' first album would be cool.

Even though I've already snatched up all their official releases, I always find myself thumbing through the Killing Joke section (surprise), hoping to find some heretofore undiscovered bootleg. After that, I just randomly hunt around. I check in with the Stranglers section pretty obsessively as well.

Mark! If you see 'Super Ae' used at Plan 9, buy it for me and I'll pay you back!

Yeah, I always look for used Comsat Angels CDs, and have never had any luck whatsoever. But my girlfriend found their first two LPs used at Plan 9 in Richmond--on the same friggin' day! After I spent lots of time scouring the internet for them, too... harumph!

I'm always hoping to stumble upon some older out-of-print stuff, and more than a few times it's happened. But it's usually just whatever's there. Oh yeah, and I really want to find a copy of DI's 'Techinicolor.'

I always look in the Fall section, because half the time there actually _is_ a new record.

Just spent the last few hours looking (unsuccessfully) at several stores for an Invictus-era Holland-Dozier-Holland anthology.

Brock K, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never anything specific. I just keep looking to see what I can find. I'm always surprised somehow.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always have something specific in my mind. (For example now it's Elton John, John Cage, ELO and Fushitsusha.) Usually, though, I end up with different records. You'll see me running from A to C, then to Y and finally arriving at G.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brock, yeah--I'm from Richmond, actually, and I'm in school at William and Mary right now, getting ready to graduate in Spring. What about you?

Clarke B., Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dominique -- Where do you live?

Actually, I'm in Dallas, aka the worst city ever for finding music. However, it's almost a moot point, because I have almost every album I want by those artists, but after years and years (mostly pre- internet availability) of searching, old habits die hard. Of course, whomever wants to send me Wow2 for Valentine's Day so I can replace my burned copy, I love you in advance.

dleone, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I try not to talk about Plan 9 online...don't want everyone descending on it and ruining it for me. But yeah, it is a great record store, for a city this size. I'll keep an eye out for that Super Ae but you should really just buy that one right away.

Dominique -- Austin is close and has good record stores, right? I always imagined it did, anyway.

Eh, it's about a 3 hour drive. They do have a big store there called Waterloo, to which I have never been, but have heard tales of vast selections and other delights.

Whoah! This almost word for word what I do. Except that I try to keep in mind any new albums out that I'm looking for, because one shop in particular has been good at getting in lots of stuff I'm looking for around the week it comes out.

Nicole, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I keep a couple of lists on my palm, one of specific records I want that I will almost certainly buy if i see them. The other list is of bands that I would buy if I find any of their albums used, mostly for filling in musical gaps.
