j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Aren't your three through five choices more late winter/spring? The Ciara finally grew on me when I heard a clearer mix.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't think "Oh" is energetic enough to be a good SUMMER JAM. I haven't heard those first two, but I'd like to.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Amerie - 1 Thing!!!

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

no "oh" gonna keep simmering i think, that fucker's like eggs on asphalt. perfect for when you got that little sweat pool jistling in the small of your belly, right below the ribcage, got them golden bellyhairs moist, after you've been laying out for awhile, after you've decided 'fuckit' on catching up on your reading and you're just laying there and you don't wanna move and you ask "can someone get me some sweet tea plz" and you didn't even want to move your jaw that much, might disrupt the jistle, and you hope someone heard you and oh, ohhh, ohhhhh and maybe someone's cooking meat somewhere. "hate it or love it"'s been out forever but it's got legs. plus "lovely day" sample - cmon that songs made for sunshine! "hollaback girl" ain't going nowhere, no matter how many anti-cheerleading laws they pass in texas.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

that david banner/lil boosie song that makes me a total hypocrite for my ying yang hate

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Trick Daddy f/ Cee-Lo, Ludacris - Sugar (Gimme Some)

(or did they screw it up by making a video for the Lil Kim version instead?)

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

"You Don't Know Me" - T.I.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

God its been so cold the last few days I can't believe its already May.

Anyhow, "Sugar"! and the Lil Kim version makes no difference to me, summer jams = radio.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I've totally been sleeping on "Sugar." I heard it months ago, but it wasn't until a week or two ago that my ears perked up.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

It's fucking cold here too but:
HOLLABACK GIRL
Rio Baile Funk: Favela Booty Beats comp
and that's it so far.
I should listen to the radio more.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard "Hate It Or Love It" as much as I'd like on local radio, it seems like the least played of all the Game and/or 50 singles here. Plus the hip-hop station DESPITE (or because of) being the most popular in town got sold and now I gotta rely on the two pop ones. Man I'm REALLY gonna miss it over the summer.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah. "Caught Up"

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

But I was so sure
That it wouldn't happen to me
Cause I know how to put it dooown
but I was soooooo wrong!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

"You Don't Know Me" -- TI
"MVP" -- MARY MARY MARY MARY MARY

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

haha I'd actually been meaning to start a thread for the past week about how people (on and off ILM) over-romanticize 'summer jams' and start talking about what is or isn't this year's summer jam way before it's time to. i'll probably post a list anyway, though.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

this shit is vaginas! v-a-g-i-n-a-s!

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

also I never understood why that Blige version of "Hate It Or Love It" gets called "MVP" when she replaces the "I'm rap's MVP" line with "I'm the soul hip hop queen". parts of it are great, especially the chorus, but some seriously awkward spots in the verses - that line "and my feelings they did hurt" is unintentionally hilarious. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

al you are destroying my heart. "mvp" is easily my fave single of the year. you have to fall in love with mary in that song!!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

What's that song that uses the "I'm a hust-le-er homie" sample from Jay-Z?

I think it might be Cassidy? I likes that song alot.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Yep, it's called "I'm a Hustla." I think it's just okay, but it's interesting how the sample is based off a short line from the verse of "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," rather than the chorus or the main synth riff.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

haha - 'you made it a hot line, i made it a hot song'

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I agree it's good and pretty, but in no way supplants or improves on the Game/50 version for me. also next time someone destroys your heart, say "and my feelings, they did hurt".

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

apparently swizz beatz has only one idea left

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

man Swizz is taking way too much heat for the Jay samples, like he's the only one who's ever done it. those T.I. and Cassidy songs are both monsters with or without the samples.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

it's a good idea, though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

cassidy is assidy

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

it is kinda funny though that Swizz says he got the idea for those samples after the Black Album a cappellas were issued to retail. like, wtf, you're a producer AND DJ from New York and you couldn't get access to a cappellas to sample before? I think maybe the reason he makes mostly keyboard beats is he never figured out how to hook up a turntable to a sampler.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

THat song is great!

blount I can send you the Maceo song.

jess doesn't like the ying yang twins?!

Juelz Santana - Mic Check is pretty good.
The Banner single is good but not great.

Xzibit - Criminal Set!!!

Memphis Bleek's "Like That" is pretty great.

They HAVE to release Mariah Carey's "Secret Love" as a single.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

"That song is great" = the cassidy song. His rapping is great too. Jess why the hate?

Mary J remix vs. original on "Hustla"? I think I like the orig. more.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

cassidy is assidy

great title for a diss track! hit the studio!

I still love cassidy for those tracks of the live in-studio battle between him and freeway where Jay-z said he'd bet money that Free could take anyone in freestyling and Cassidy just fucking eviscerates free! Hott.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"Mic Check" is awesome. best Dip Set record in a while.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

everything is great! aesthetics are for suckers!

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Mic Check is also easily my favorite rapping from Juelz probably ever.

haha jess i just said that banner track you like is just ok!

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

everything is great! aesthetics are for suckers!

Can I have permission to like that one Cassidy song? Please?

I thought this thread was about songs that people like.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

haha i am just a bitter old crank

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

no shit

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

(nobody knows alex in nyc's struggle)

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

When his baby starts listening to rap music, we'll be in for an entertaining ride. PS: I hope i'm not so addicted to ILM that I'm still posting here when that happens.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

anyway, this is neither the time nor the place! blount's thread shall remain untainted by cynicism

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

to be honest i'm not completely sure that grady babies 'the abc's' song is exactly what i'm thinking of (v-103 doesn't have a last songs played list, just their general playlist), but i think it is - the hook is the 'onetwothreefourfive sixseveneightnineten ELEVENTWELVE' from sesame street chanted and the lyrics are generally 'a is for atlanta' etc. i'm guessing it's the grady babies cuz grady is the big hospital downtown so maybe they were born there. there's another song they play on the radio alot i'd list if i knew the name of it, it's sorta a remake of 'the name song' only a bit over the top. and heavy atlanta repping per usual - 'atlanta fanna bo banna' etc.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

blount i emailed you that song.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

the maceo one i mean.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

al are you really a skeptic of the summer jam? cmon man summertimes got great weather, the sexiest weather, it's a good time to get active cuz you got sneaks but you need a new pair cuz basketball courts in the summer got girls there, it's a good time to get inactive, people wear less clothes, the movies are louder, cmon man you don't tear up when you hear "circle in the sand"? not even a little?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

dee thx!!!!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

summer jams are a reason for living

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

that song is actually false advertising though because no philly summer is "about 88"...it's usually about 9000 degrees and feels like the inside of shaq's jock

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

he's referring to how much jazzy jeff weighs. about 88 pounds.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i think al was talking more about the constant scramble to identify summer jams.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

cf.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah that does suck, i've been trying to identify who the hell does that '12345, 678910, 11-12' song for a couple weeks and god knows when i'll find out out who does 'atlanta-fanna bo-banna'. WILL ONE OF YOU MOTHERFUCKERS BACKANNOUCE EVERY NOW AND THEN WTF???

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Team Sleep - "Ever (Foreign Flag)"
MIA - "Fire Fire"
Gorillaz - "All Alone"

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I miss when rappers used to have little lines for the year...like "88 time to set it straight" or "gettin' mine in '89"...actually maybe it was only those two years, I can't remember anything for 86 or 87...."87...all dogs go to heaven"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

(haw, I was just coming to start this thread.)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

BLOUNT GET ONE YES.COM

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

thanks, jaymc, I was referring more to the scramble. there was some thread here not long ago where people got seriously goofy about it - "this is the summer jam!" "no it's not, it's not summery enough" "yes it is!" "but it's only april, it'll peak way before the actual summer" etc etc

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Amerie - 1 Thing!!!

-- W i l l (lolomgwt...), May 4th, 2005.

Right on

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

haha i literally have tears in my eyes

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

haha! love you, too!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

yes that amerie song is straight FIRE especially the remix w/ fabolous

fh, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

killer mike ft big boi - "my chrome"

jones (actual), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

What exactly makes a "summer jam?" A lot of these songs came out late last year.

And unfortunately it would appear that I'm alone in finding the new versions of "1 Thing" and "Hate It Or Love It" to be superfluous.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I think by the summer either "Talkin' About" or "Come With Me" will supplant "1 Thing" as my jam.

right now Lil Mo "Dem Boyz" is the shit, though, as far as R&B goes.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

STILL FUCKIN' TIPPIN'

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

summer jam = it is or is gonna be all over radio this summer and matches up well to the bounty of the season. now that school lets out bizarrely early and lets back in cruelly early summer starts about a month, month and a half after spring break. this thread can be revived too so certain songs peaking or past peaked now ("hate it or love it", "sugar", "hollaback girl") are just the summer jams right now and i'm guessing in a couple of weeks when school's totally out and it's totally summer. don't necessarily have to be fast dance songs either, cf. "circle in the sand".

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

STILL FUCKIN' TIPPIN'

wrong fucking summer.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

:-)

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

I took this to mean "my own personal Summer jams," not the official stamp-bearing Jam of Summer 2K5. Was I wrong? I don't honestly imagine Josh Rouse is going to blow up on pop radio.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm just listing songs I hear on the radio 24/7 right now that I'd be cool with hearing throughout the summer

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Deej, but you see, that song continues to tip into this summer.

xp

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)
