Largest TS selection ever?

My choice is Travis btw, although Keane seem to make better music right now.

Well, of course, 1997 Radiohead beats them all anyway. :)

elbow are the only one of these I can listen to. and I think they're a lot more interesting than the others as well.

I've never met anyone who has a bad word to say about Keane.

Paul Torrisi (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't like that Keane dude's face.

I guess I'll vote for Coldplay. Clocks was a cool song.

If you thought "Clocks" was a cool song, you'll LOVE "Speed of Sound"!

I hate Keane...

HELL NO! WE WON'T GO!

Whoever likes at least one of these is welcome. Personally, I cannot quite stand Starsailor.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

[albums two and three by] Travis > Elbow > Coldplay > Keane > Starsailor, the most boring band I've seen live in ages. Don't really know those other bands (and what of Snow Patrol?).

Keane sound like Air Supply.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Keane, I would say, are musically clearly closer to AOR than any other "indie" band ever. But, I mean, Steely Dan were close to AOR too, but they were great nevertheless.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Leaves' album is really good! they win this round with ease.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

The first half of the Keane album is OK but they're very one note and all their best ideas are played out by the 4th song or so. Without being specific, I'll say the same for Coldplay. Half of it is nice enough MOR pop-rock and the rest is filler. OTM re: Starsailor left me numb. Travis mostly bore me and I don't know the others.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Elbow are the best of these, hands down.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

The second Elbow album was indeed very good.

That said, I still profess a soft spot for early Travis. Late Travis is generally awful, with the exception of the surprisingly lovely and un-vomit-inducing "Love Will Come Through" and "Side".

Athlete are clearly the worst of this lot (yes, I'd rather listen to "Alcoholic" by Starsailor than whatever the last Athlete single was). I've never heard Leaves.

These bands all seem to have horrible names. Elbow would be a good name if they were a crustcore band or something.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Elbow. "Any Day Now" alone creams the rest of these bands and it's not even one of their big singles.

Telephonething, Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Elbow, by miles. Athlete and Keane have both had their moments. Coldplay annoy me for reasons which I've never quite been able to fathom... it might be my long-standing antipathy to anything which overtly tries to be Big And Important.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Seeing all those bands in one thread title makes me feel a little queasy. The answer is Elbow because they have one or two great songs which are nearly (but not quite) enough to compensate for the dreadful, sexless dirges which constitute the rest of their output. Coldplay are only good to be sampled by Brandy, and the others have absolutely zero redeeming features.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

coldplay

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I pick Travis, as they seem to have more songs worth keeping than the others. Keane's best song sounded like Ultravox to me, but the Air Supply comparison isn't far off the mark. The guy from Athlete just sounds perpetually confused. Thirteen Senses = Coldplay with guitar solos and a slightly less annoying singer.

Deluxe (Damian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Who's that group that did the Northern version of "Independant Women"?

Them.

Coldplay are the best of these. Travis probably the worst, or maybe Elbow because people think they're actually good.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 8 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Elbow best by far, although I'm less bothered by them now than I was with their first three records. Coldplay, grudgingly, have some alright tunes. Kane write a nice melody. The rest deserve fucking torturing.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, I grudgingly think that Don't Panic is gorgeous.

Don't Panic is gorgeous, that's true. But it's 13 years old and very little since has been that unassumingly lovely.
