or stay home with rekkids? Both playing tonight (MG @Knitt, Caribou - Northsix), MG Sat nite - Northsix. I like both's album-before-current equally.

caribou

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mountain Goats were superb at the Black Cat in DC on Tuesday night. That's my vote. I did see Manitoba, admittedly a while ago, and the band sounded clumsy to me.

paul c (paul c), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

MG all the way, baby

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

MG

Looks like MIR votes Caribou -- anyone else?

Are caribou ever found in the mountains?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing Caribou this month but only cos Russian Futurists are on the bill. I liked the Manitoba show I went to fwiw, never seen Mountain Goats live.

I'm seeing Caribou this month but only cos Russian Futurists Junior Boys are on the bill.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I just bought the new Caribou and I'm not really into it. I guess I thought the last one was overrated, too. I dunno. I think I like the idea of his music more than I actually like the music.

Then again, I'm not a huge Mountain Goats fan, either -- but I can guarantee you it will be an entertaining show.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to Morbs for pre-empting me and posting my comments for me.

Next week, MG are playing on the same night as Autechre, which kinda sucks, because I wanted to see them both and I've never seen MG before.

But yeah, Caribou are spectacular live these days and they deserve all of your money.

A245. Mountain Caribou Trophy Hunt in British Columbia
The B.C. government has recently opened the season to hunt Mountain Caribou and Mountain Goat in an area that has been closed. We spent a good deal of this past season checking out the area and determined we will be able to successfully offer a 7-day mountain caribou (with mountain goat as an option) hunt during the 2003 season.

Oh no look out J0hn! And Manitoba guy! You must band together for protectioN!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

caribou. they were v good last night, tighter than i remember them from the 'up in flames' tour. i think the new stuff works better live too. not to mention the junior boys also being on the bill...

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Me at Luna. Just kidding.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose I'm going to the Caribou show...for the Junior Boys.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

MG. They were nice enough to visit my town, and Darnielle stole a guy's cigarette during the show.

WillS, Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

saw caribou last night. it was pretty amazing, and i'm not even that huge of a manitoba/caribou fan (i went for jr. boys and four tet). mountain goats are good if you see them in an intimate venue, IMO. otherwise, skip it and go caribou.

katie hasty (katie, a princess), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Caribou all the way baby!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, a virtual tie so far...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This is silly. MGs.

adam (adam), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

dude see caribou, their live act is amazing - so much louder and more genuinely psychedelic than the records (which are also really good, but still)

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 5 May 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd vote for Caribou, but I thought the Junior Boys were terrible, like really lackluster here in Montreal, partly owing to technical difficulties and partly just because it seemed like they were working through some electronica dialectical conflicts that I've been blissfully ignorant of...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 5 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

My vote goes to MG, but honestly, I don't think JD would blame you for skipping his show to go see the JBeez, being a huge fan of theirs.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

>so much louder and more genuinely psychedelic than the records

There we go! Genuine psychedelia kinda irritates me.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, I totally disagree with that ... like I said on the blog, I think the psychedelia is toned down in the live show, and they transform into uberfunky nu-Can doing "Miles of Smiles"-style Black Dice covers.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean yeah there was lots of funky kraut style too (the nature of the new material makes that kind of a given). by 'psychedelic' i was referring to the swirling animations projected on their faces, jumping out of their seats to grab melodicas, etc trippy atmosphere. we can at least agree that it's louder than the records though right?

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen both acts, and would choose Mountain Goats over Caribou any day of the week. I remember the MG show being a lot more engaging and fun that Caribou, where I felt like I was being schooled in 'indietronic psychedelia', i.e. no very much fun.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I had worknight issues last night, ie fell asleep around 10, so it's MG on Saturday. (plus I'm sure I saw Manitoba live) Thx for the input.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

tomorrow night i am leaving work at 5 and going to a jr. boys/caribou show, followed by a late autechre show in the same building. i've only seen manitoba before having missed the last jr. boys show (doh lame venue) and autechre have never been to philadephia!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
reporting in from last night(L.A.), Caribou was excellent, with new cartoons and better songs, Junior Boys set was hot, I missed at least two songs by Russian Futurists, who were good but desperately need some stage schtick or something, crowd was pretty dead but then they(we) were like that for the whole show.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah Brad Lanier made awesome noise, made my wife throw up haha.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Snarf. Would have been nice to catch that show but alas.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

You were doing the ol' Throbbing Gristle 'sound loud enough to see' trick, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I'll be missing Caribou/Junior Boys this weekend in Seattle as I'll be in Vegas... SNAFR!

I'll be there for MG on Sun, Jun 19th though.
