Which recent Steven Wilson project is better? Or are they both equally good (or bad)? I haven't heard either, and I'm curious to know what you might think, whether I should check one or both out, etc.

I have them both, and I think "Blackfield" is a little better, but I must admit I'm having a tough time getting really into either.

I haven't heard Blackfield, but Deadwing is fan-fucking-tastic. One of the best releases this year. I listened it today and some of the minor reservations I had about it (while still thinking it was grebt)were completely gone.

the blackfield album is excellent, probably edges out deadwing by a bit. "where is my love" (which wilson didn't write) is bewilderingly hooky and great, I don't know why it's stuck on there as a "bonus track" (I'm not sure what a bonus track really is in the day of cds)

the new blackfield album has leaked, not nearly as good as the first one, and has an unnecessary remake of "where is my love" on it that isn't as good as the original.
