I'm loving the new Jaga Jazzist album, "What We Must"

Second time listen right now, and it already seems familiar to me.
I always take that as a good sign.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it better than the last few? I got sick of those reeaaal fast. It all blended together into this sugary dn'b/fuzak sound, and it amazes me how they can have so many melodic instruments doing so many different parts and yet only have maybe 1 decent melody on the record.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I say yes, only because my initial reaction to the other album wasn't nearly as strong.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

er, that should be "albums"

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This one is way more rock-oriented, stripped of all (or most of) the eletronica. All the same hairpin turns and unexpected vistas, but a MUCH fuller, orchestral thing happening....I likey. Oddly I've been listening to the second disk most, which is demo versions of four songs on disk one...

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What second disc????????????!!?!?!?!?!??!?

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to know where I can get the second disc, is that the US release? The album is beautiful, I've been listening to it for the past week on repeat and it keeps getting better.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the second disc only available through the smalltownsupersound release? (I have the NAmerican Ninja Tune version, one disc only)

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I might like this one more then, I'll try it out. If it's cheesy though, I know where this thread is.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, are you lactose-intolerant?

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to think of it, I bought some Finnish cheese a couple weeks ago and I didn't really like it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I loved it at first, and then it was too dense and made me sick. IT IS JAGA JAZZIST CHEESE!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan,

Here's a sample, let us know if it makes you feel ill.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

... and the vid of the first track is here:

http://www.jagajazzist.com/v2/news.php

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jena! I will listen when I get home (can't listen to music on my work pc).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the SmallTownSuperSound release, I bought it in Paris. The second disk is called the "Spydeberg Sessions," and it's just rougher-hewn versions of a buncha tunes from disc one, let's call it...23 minutes. The drums are more bangin', it breathes a lot more.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I just noticed that the version I uploaded skips a lot, my CD-RW is really scratched. Sorry.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, Jena...that is a terrible video. I mean, I've come to accept lipsynching from a few people with guitars and a drum kit, but to see an entire orchestra pretending to play this very produced, precise (and earnest, it must be said) music... INSIDE A BARN(!),at night....musn't let the record suffer for it I guess.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't blame Jena. I don't think its a great vid (how many are there of those?), but the song is in the somewhere.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I haven't see the video yet, andit's sounding like I'd better keep it that way.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The 2nd disc (spyedeberg sessions) is included with the 1st North American pressing from Ninja Tune as well.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean to imply that Jena was responsible. OR IS SHE?

Anyway you're right Jena, you're better off not watching. It's like seeing how sausage is made.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like seeing how sausage is made.

Now, that'd be a good video!
"F'real", as the kids are apt to verbalize.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ninja Tune's been doing a lot of that lately- Blockhead, TTC, Roots Manuva and now Jaga Jazzist. The problem is that the single- and double-disc versions are put out at the same time. The double-disc version of the Jaga album has one of those silly cardboard slipcases and a little blurb on the cover about the second disc, and seems to be listed separately on most online stores (Amazon et al).

The album is great, too, though I tend to just listen to the first two tracks on repeat. And yeah, the video is awful, despite the somewhat redeeming presence of a stuffed monkey.

telephonething, Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

On the STSS version the 2nd disc is bundled inside the jewel case, with the flip out thingy. (Agreed, the first 2 tracks are killer....)

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry guys, I wasn't blown away by that first track. They do have a very recognizeable style of writing and voicing melodies, which is cool, but it's still a bit sickly sweet for me. It would work great in a Final Fantasy game though. I did like the riff they got into at the end, but then the song stopped.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Jordan, have you heard Larsen's album Play, on Important Records? I think it might be up your alley if you like the concept of Jaga Jazzist but find the cheese factor too high. Definitely in my '05 top 10 so far. (The conceit is that they're reinterpreting Authechre songs, organically, but I don't know about any of all that....) It's a warm and beuatiful record with I think kinda the same equidistance between jazz, rock, electronic and chamber that JJ has...

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF that sounds awesome.

A friend of mine does an amazing version of Cichli on tuba.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I love this album even more now....

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what was the name of that group that did an acapella version of 'gnit' (off Tri Repetae?)

I didn't like that much actually.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Just heard "Stardust Hotel" on the radio. I'm gonna have to get this record.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 22 October 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Swedenborgske Rom" alone is better than the entire combined output of S***r R*s, and in fact I'd recommend the album on the strength of just that one song (although the others aren't bad either).

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 22 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

They're back after a long layoff, with gigs in the UK and Japan this autumn and a new LP on the way. Can't wait.

anagram, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

They were fantastic at the Barbican this week, not a very busy thread tho' so obv not much JJ love on ILM.

Wow, I'm enjoying this new one quite a bit. Never heard them before this. What album should I check out next?

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

(New one = One Armed Bandit)

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

haven't listened to them in years, and i'm not really interested in going back to the old stuff for fear of early '00s ninja tune-style corniness. i'm curious to hear how they sound now, though.

shining >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> jaga jazzist

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

listening to new stuff on their myspace. it sounds so awesome at first, jazz fusion drums + sweet synths + impeccably recorded horns & woodwinds, but it all gets kinda busy and anime-soundtracky after a while.

"toccata" sounds pretty dope, but i think all "music for 18 musicians" rips are pretty dope.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

it's just a bit finickity. shining (who share some band members/musical mentality with JJ) are killer and righteous where this lot noodle

they've still done some killer stuff but it's diluted imo

will probably at least hear the new stuff

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

listening to shining's myspace, not really feeling the metal riffs.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

jaymc, you SHOULD hear 'what we must' because it's got a couple of stunning, stunning songs ('all i know is tonight' and 'swedenborgske rom'); they're actually the LONGEST tracks on the album but they're more focused and effective than the others imo

jordan, the *track* (not the album) 'in the kingdom of kitsch...' was in my decade-end song-list; i love it so very much. if it's on their myspazz you should give it a listen

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

(last two tracks of WWM, 'mikado' and 'i have a ghost, now what', are pretty effective and interesting li'l pieces as well, although a lot more subdued than the widescreen heroics of the other two i mentioned...it's a solid album! i haven't listened to it properly in a while; maybe it holds up better than i thought)

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

it does have the trademark wackiness (and ADD/stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting) that puts me off most lj music. nothing personal.

xp

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

but it's a structured assault upon the senses! i mean sure i had to hear it about 10 times before i figured out what was going on, but it sucks you into its world and pulls a whole load of awesome tricks in order to keep things ratcheting up - JJ are 'wackier' imo - Shining are more concerned with writing '22nd century schizoid man'

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

if it helps, your friend's band's last album, representative of a more chilled-out form of art-jazz-post-whatever, is easily in my '09 top 10

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

i am glad you like the cougar record, more people should hear it. when i first heard it i didn't think it was as good as the first one but it's really grown on me.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

the new shining is brutality

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

i think the new cougar is easily their best so far! especially the second half, which is plain beautiful

am getting the new shining asap because the myspace tracks are (for me) highly promising

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

i wish people could hear the original version of 'endings' (which another friend recorded in college), because it's basically my favorite electronic track ever.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

I went to see JJ last night and at times I found myself thinking "this is very impressive, but do I actually like it?" On the other side of the coin, some of it was terrific, like Toccata and Animal Chin. Please help me to see what I couldn't 'get' at the time.

Daniel Giraffe, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

four years pass...

They've released a new song from an upcoming album which I think is really really good and can be heard here if you wish:

https://soundcloud.com/ninja-tune/jaga-jazzist-starfire

I absolutely love What We Must and One Armed Bandit and this seems to be a continuation of that kind of quality whilst experimenting with different colours/flavours.

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 April 2015 17:39 (eleven years ago)

The whole album's really amazing. Jus' saying. Sigh.

meaty, desperate, and honest about the world we live in (ultros ultros-ghali), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 21:11 (ten years ago)

How so? Willing to believe they can still put out something decent, even if much of their stuff comes off as trite now

strangled whelps (imago), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)

I'm not a fan of their first releases really, and if you don't get much out of what we must/one armed-bandit there won't be much for you here.

idk it's richly detailed, and the melodies/arrangements are really good. I know I'm alone on this probably
