Compilations that got you crazy for a whole genre

Inspired by the "This is the thread where you get me into..." threads.

For me, these were killer:

Hip Hop Don't Stop (the one mixed by Prime Cuts): before this I hadn't even heard 'T.R.O.Y.', let alone 'Just To Get a Rep'.

All Back To Mine (the original one): introduced me to Patti Jo, Back To My Roots, and more insane rare groove stuff.

The Music In My Head: made African music appealing to someone whose previous forays into the music of that continent always seemed to end in boredom (I know, I know...).

Uncut free "Sounds From the American West" CD - 'Oh My Sweet Carolina'., 'Dark End of the Street', Handsome Family, Shelby Lynne....

Favela Booty Beats - We all know about this one.

Kompakt - Total 3. Wow - what is this shit?

Ethiopiques 3.

There was this Projekt records sampler that really nerded up 15-year-old me.

The Downtown 81 soundtrack sent me hurtling into No Waveland.

Disco not Disco 1

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Disco Not Disco 2 opened my eyes to Connie Case which shoved me into Latin Freestyle and I'll be forever grateful. Someone hip and kewl and cred should do a Freestyle Not Freestyle.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Downtown 81 has a soundtrack? Holy Shit!

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

As a small child:

Motown Dance Party, a dbl cd comp of Motown classics. One of about 4 albums my parents had. First heard it aged 4, my love for Motown will never die.

Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Another of the four. Opened my eyes to the greatness of commercial disco. Held back on it though, only gave it its dues at age 14 (when I openly despised all other music ever).

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, yeah and it's fucking great. Ignore the album version of Tuxedomoon's 'Desire', this is the one you need. Along with that skull-scraping Walter Steding track, the James White/Chance anthem, and 'Me no pop i' by Coati Mundez (or whatever they were called, basically Kid Creole with the little manic fat guy upfront), yeah this is a fantastic album.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Connie Case's track was one in a lineage of overlooked Noel Williams (King Sporty) songs from the post disco, pre-electro period. In fact, 'Get on Down' is a cover, to which Noel himself did the original just a couple years prior as The Roots Rockers.

'Haven't Been Funked Enough' has been around for a while thanks to Perfect Beats comps...but J Griffin's Rock Attack is equally spectaculor and totally overlooked.

Noel married Betty Wright, and they togehter produced a slew of interesting Miami Electro songs, even moving into Miami Bass territory up until about 1987. Prior to his stint in Miami, he was a Bob Marley/Studio One sideman.

I mentioned him a bit on WFMU:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/8855

There's a good edit of this show a DJ in Georgia did that is circulating on soulseek if you want the jist instead of the gliches.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Here we go, forgot to mention the Liquid Liquid too (first time I heard them, and wow):

1. So Far So Real - Gray
2. K Pasa-Pop I - Kid Creole & the Coconuts
3. Desire - Tuxedomoon
4. Cavern - Liquid Liquid
5. Blonde Redhead - DNA
6. Sax Maniac - James Chance
7. I'm a Doggy - The Lounge Lizards
8. Contort Yourself - James Chance
9. Drum Mode - Gray
10. Closet - Lydia Lunch
11. Palabras Con Ritmo - Coati Mundi
12. Bob the Bob - The Lounge Lizards
13. Tangita - Pablo Calogero
14. Mr. Softee - Kid Creole & the Coconuts
15. Cheree - Suicide
16. Detached - DNA
17. 15 Minutes - Chris Stein
18. Copy - Plastics
19. New Day
20. Beat Bop - Rammellzee

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

joe-Haven't Been Funked Enough isn't on the Perfect Beats comps, I'm pretty sure.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, that's exactly what I said, and I said it quoting you.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Papa, you are awesome. I downloaded an odd version of 'Get Down' (from you) which had Betty Wright on it, and sounded a bit more Miami Bass than the Connie. I thought it was a remix but I'm guessing it's the original.

Another qu (apologies for the derail), is Connie Case the same person who did 'Funky Little Beat' and 'Rock Me'? I've wondering about this for a while.

I'll grab that Griffin track the next time you're on SSK.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! I'm stunned, how can people bang on about No New York and not mention this in the same breath? I didn't know Gray made any recordings, amazing indeed.

Can you get it on CD, or do you have to pay top dollar for vinyl?

P.S. Thank You!

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

huh? What did I say? I got into Haven't Been Funked Enough because it's a flipside of the Together Forever bootleg, which I bought at rock-n-soul because it was the stand-out track on the Perfect Beats comp.

The orig. Get On Down that ppw speaks of has male vocals, and is less Miami Bass if anything.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

a gray track also appears on the Anti-NY comp on Gomma, which came out around the same time as Downtown 81.

Since I'm here:

No New York ->no wave
Wanna Buy a Bridge? ->everything Rough Trade
Fruit of the Original Sin ->everything Crepuscule
Cherry Red Seeds + Pillows and Prayers. ->lost UK post-punk/new wave singles
I-F's Mixed up at the Hague ->Italo

if those can be defined as genres.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Affectian, thanks for the praise.

Connie Case only did that track and the b-side to my knowledge. Connie that did Funky Little Beat (et al) was signed to Nezz/Sunnyview. She was discovered by Henry Stone and Amos Larkin a couple years after. Different people. I think Connie Case is the better singer by far.

My slsk should be up now, unless I somehow got knocked off (I'm at "work").

Speaking of Gray, I'd be curious to know about people's perspective on Vincent Gallo's reported non-role in that band...

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: Right on - forgot about 'Mixed up at the hague'. Superb.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Let Them Eat Jellybeans -- containing Flipper, DOA, Black Flag, Bad Brains, DK's, Circle Jerks, the Offs, Really Red, Geza X....totally turned me onto hardcore.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mzui, I never got into No New York at all, I find D81 to be far superior. I think it's available on CD but I just d/ld it. If you're on SSK, message Ian SPACK and I'll put the album on my pc for you.

I just checked, and that version of 'Get on down' is called: Noel Williams, Larry Dermer & Betty Wright - 'Mix On The Blaze', so I'm guessing it is a remix after all. Looking forward to hearing Noel's original take on it.

xposts galore

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Rhino's excellent "Poptopia" compilations got me into powerpop. Prior to that, I thought classic pop was something that only Brits were able to do properly.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mo' Wax "Headz" comps - mid-90s downbeat electronix

Soul Jazz 100-600% Dynamite comps - finely aged Jamaican classics with a range of (typically sans-Rasta) styles.

Serious Beats, Vol. 3

Even though most of the tracks are edited down to 3 minutes, this two-disc comp completely sold me on new beat as rave music.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Uhm, well there's this cassette and the label seems to be "Falcon." The number is 886, and a sticker on it says "Made in Lebanon." The cover feature a cropted drawing of a blue-eyed blonde wearing sungalsses that are falling down to reveal her eyes (or one eye in this case). She is wearing glossy lipstick and her lips are slightly parted. The word "NEW" appears on the cover. This introduced me to George Wassouf and has my favorite Hanan song, and generally was one of my gateways into Arabic music.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(That's not really a genre though, although most of this stuff is from a dancier poppier end of it so at least a certain group of genres.)

Ian, Mix on the Blaze was edited mix of different tracks on Tashamba/Konduko records. The actual title is something Like various or whatever, but I tagged it based on what records were used in the edit. It's ceratinly a hodge podge of proto-electro and late miami electro.

I did a 70+ minute mix that is all that stuff that's out there floating around.

I'd like to think that I-F turned me onto Italo, and I turned him onto late 80's Miami Techno Bass with a mix I did for CBS that used to get a lot of play...

Sorry for the attempted hijack.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

PPW, ah thanks for that, I've been wondering about that track for ages now. I'll certainly look out for your mix too.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just dl-ed a track by Youth MCs with Noel Williams and Betty Wright called 'Back on the Wax' - where does tht fit into all of this?

(bear in mind I'd never heard of Noel Williams until an hour ago, so thanks for the heads up on that)

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

'Get Down' is the shit. This is seriously awesome.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Baboon2004, you're in for some awesome shit then. Search ILX for anything about Latin Freestyle (start with Debbie Deb, Connie and Trinere). Raid my files on SSK for some of the best, but PPW there is the Master.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, will do - just what I was looking for, a whole new (seemingly mindblowing) genre to explore! LOVE the bass pulse on 'Get Down' :)

Rewind and Re-ReWind got me into the whole 2 Step thing... it only lasted.... 2 steps...

elgolfo (elgolfo), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

God, being at work sucks on multiple levels...

I believe 'back on wax' was one of the two Bass songs Noel and Betty did around 1987. Does it have my year tagging system on it? It's been a while since I thought about the late 80's Noel stuff.

The best next to the early 80's Connie Case/Ex tras/J Griffin material is the mid 80's Betty singing with Noel doing vocoder (Family Funktion, Summer Break, Air Freshener, etc.). Shit's hard to find outside of the mp3 world though.

Noel was the guy who suggested to Bob Marley to sing the Banana Splitys theme in Buffalo Soldier.

Just say no.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

PPW - yeh, it's an 1987 track, on Tashamba.

I think I dl-ed quite a lot of your Miami Bass stuff earlier in the year as well, so thanks for putting it all up.

i had been to a few RAVES in high school (though i mostly remember hearing bad trance/hard house) and had started to get dnb cd's a few years before i heard hoow around '99 or so. it was mostly the "yes. this is what i am into now. must have more. now." moment.

I can't even remember the name of the record, it was something like Greatest Easily Licensed Soul Tracks In The World Ever Ever, and I know it only from the boiled-down C90 I made of it which had the word "SOUL" on one side and "TAPE" on the other but that tape sent me down the rabbit hole for 6 months in '97, I just couldnt believe how much of the basics I turned out not to know.

Now the only soul songs I hear are the ones Martin gmails me, but oh well.
