Just leaked.

Just started listening...

On a side note, I wonder if Jamie will pull an Oberst and sing his song about raping the president to death on Leno.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

slsk nic?

wrtrtrtyr, Friday, 6 May 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Not on soulseek (using a mac), but it's on Oink and Indietorrents. I could provide an invite to Oink if you need one.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, "Rose of Sharon" is nice.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, this is rather disappointing on first listen.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it sound just like the other Xiu Xiu albums? Has Jamie Stewart gotten voice lessons yet?

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, simon. i got it on indietorrents. by the way, what's oink? never heard of that.

raetret, Friday, 6 May 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oink is another torrent site, not indie-restricted.

And no, Jamie sounds the same as always. Except there's nothing here that's shocking like "support the troops" was.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well, what is the instrumentation?

Pippi Longstockings, Friday, 6 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of acoustic guitar and noisy electronic bits, with the occasional flourish of poppy effects. Autoharp on "Bog People".

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

can someone hook me up with an oink invite, possibly?

brokenfuses (brokenfuses), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sent!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ten In The Swear Jar should never have broken up.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have one more?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd do just about anything for an invite to Oink or indietorrents.
Serious.

gloria gaynor (gloriagaynor), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Muppet Face", holy shit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

this one's taking a while to grow on me. i loved Fabulous Muscles to death, but i'm not so sure about La Foret..

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

------>another request for an oink invite

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The ending of the album seemed weak. The whole record sounds like something he conceived of with solo live performances in mind. There's a lot less going on here than on "Fabulous Muscles", but then again, "A Promise" was pretty stripped-down too, so who knows exactly what he was thinking.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

sent, sent, sent, and I'm spent!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks!

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ixnay on my previous comment - "saturn" is this album's "support the troops" once you listen...

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does "Clover" exist? It was originally slated to be a "european bonus track" and should have stayed that way. Take it out and the album becomes an extension of "knife play" - freakish, noisy and sometimes melodic.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It on slsk, BTW. Saw it two days or so ago.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really liking this. I love the sort of chill-out aspect to "Ale." "Bog People," "Saturn," "Mousey Toy," and "Muppet Face" are fantastic. This is good stuff.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna hear it too.....
someone YSI it please

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 6 May 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's not forget that People who don't like xiu xiu are dead inside.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 May 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha it wasn't me, I promise!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 7 May 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Has Jamie Stewart gotten voice lessons yet?

i can see people not liking his vocals but... voice lessons?

i admire this band's ability to flirt with total ridiculousness.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha did i say "flirt"?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 7 May 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yousendit?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 7 May 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yousendit?

-- Aerodynamic

Hop on the soul and go to the "ILM" room and there ask. People have been tallking about it tonight. I don't have it yet though.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 7 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

tried it....

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 7 May 2005 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

finally found it

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 7 May 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn it, the old tracklist works so much better than the sequencing that it has now: it omits "Clover" and opens with "Baby Captain", among other improvements in flow. Give it a try:

# "Baby Captain"
# "Bog People"
# "ALE"
# "Dangerous You Shouldn't Be Here"
# "Saturn"
# "Pox"
# "Rose Of Sharon"
# "Muppet Face"
# "Mousy Toy"
# "Yellow Raspberry"

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 7 May 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Xiu Xiu room on Soulseek was a FUCKING NIGHTMARE.

Palpatean Mists, Saturday, 7 May 2005 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i've just finished first listen, and i'm a little unsure. all of the other releases have pretty much hit with me instantly, this one is taking a bit more time.

bog people sounds a lot better then the live versions made me think it was going to sound. ale is very nice. some of the instrumentation in the earlier songs is very nice. the song structure isn't doing it for me at the moment, my initial reaction is that it was a lot more free on FM.

this is only a first listen though, i'll be interested to give it more time and see what i can get out of it.

acidmouth (acidmouth), Saturday, 7 May 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

where did you get that tracklisting from?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 7 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the tracklist that got published everywhere back in january. the sequencing that the .torrent is in agrees with a newer, apparently revised tracklist published on Pitchfork about about a week and a half ago.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 7 May 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the album reminds me a lot of a promise, sonically and dynamically. it's really a treat, but i was let down by fabulous muscles.

Timothy Olyphant, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
according to allmusic the tracklisting is

1. Clover
2. Muppet Face
3. Mousey Toy
4. Pox
5. Baby Captain
6. Saturn
7. Rose of Sharon
8. Ale
9. Bog People
10. Dangerous You Shouldn't Be Here
11. Yellow Raspberry

i've already gotten used to the other tracklisting...

That One Guy (That One Guy), Saturday, 11 June 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

it also has a pretty ugly cover

That One Guy (That One Guy), Saturday, 11 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

... per usual ?

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Saturday, 11 June 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Fabulous Muscles has the best cover ever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe how good this is. i liked FM, but this is much, much better. if it wasn't so, y'know, evil and miserable, 'Pox' is catchy enough to be a chart single. he hasn't changed things much, but he seems to finally be realising what he's been working towards.

i am noticing an absence of enthusiasm from others, however, so maybe i've been hitting the pipe harder than usual recently.

Lee F# (fsharp), Saturday, 11 June 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
So... this is out on Tuesday...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like this album much until i muted the television and played it on my ipod while watching travel shows.

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Saturday, 9 July 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

This album sucks. The whole Xiu Xiu thing wore out halfway through Fabulous Muscles.

enjoy bell woods, Saturday, 9 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention that song about the soldiers or whatever is the worst thing that's ever been recorded to tape.

enjoy bell woods, Saturday, 9 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

This album has really grown on me. I'm still not thrilled with the sequencing, though -- the last couple of songs are a bit weak. The more improvisational passages started taking shape for me after several listens. Also, "Bog Shapes" is shimmery, gorgeous stuff.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 July 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

The European release has the nicest layout ever, the US cover (at least) is so weak in comparison. The United States got fucked on this

Palpatean Mists, Saturday, 9 July 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

pic of the euro version?

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 9 July 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

i got the copy from acuarela discos, and the artwork is gorgeous
