Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" March No.1, classic or dud?

Jeff W, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I ask because they played it in the supermarket last night and when it got to the LOHAG bit, all the customers (and this was in Belgium BTW) started whistling or humming along, including me much to my surprise. It is a stonking tune, 'though.

Supp question for UK people: are you in this instance able to disassociate the music from the words (and the context in which the song is mostly heard in England)?

Ah, it's a ploy: the national hymns always get the best tunes...I Vow To Thee my Country, Jerusalem etc. It's odd, because the actual National Anthem, doesn't have one...posssibly because it's not a national anthem, but a song about the monarch (apparently, we're the only country to have such a thing...)

Gosh so it was (you can hear the theme in wav form here. Nice guitars. Elgar would have been proud.

It has a better melody line than bloody dirgelike "God Save The Queen". Actually I find "LOHAG" socially and culturally inclusive to me, which considering my tastes and interests is quite some achievement. I like it, and don't feel excluded by it in any way.

Holland and Belgium get BBC1 and BBC2 on cable, don't they? Presumably that would have entailed "GSTQ" nightly until BBC1 stopped closing down.

Anthony Sanderson? Who he :)?
