Sandy Denny ... this is a shock to me

I've just read this article in The Guardian about Sandy Denny

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1476963,00.html

I've been something of a fan for years, but had no idea she was such a drunk/druggist.

Not always sure what to make of Linda Thompson, however...no way was she anywhere near as good as Sandy.

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the problem? Oh, I see- the Zappa part!

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually the Zappa part was, ummm, interesting, but then Zappa was always (allegedly) very straight, so that seems a bit odd.

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You honestly didn't know she was a boozehound? Why do you think she fell down those stairs?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

She was eating a ham sandwich, and choked on it?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess you're going to have to pick a new crush- Judee Sill, perhaps?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was told last week that she died by throwing herself down the stairs and was quite upset. I was glad to discover today that it was just in drunken error.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, Judee Sill, of course, was an ex-prostitute junkie!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I must be very innocent not to have known if everyone else did ... I alwasy thought her melancholia was because she never got it on with Richard Thompson. I never actually had a crush on her, I just assumed that her wonderful voice meant a "wonderful" (ie no faults) person.

This now seems very judgemental, which it isn't meant to be.

I think I'll go and listen to "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and weep a bit.

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

andyjack, you're not amateurist posting under another ID, are you?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll go and listen to "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and weep a bit.

And 'No more sad refrains'; the last song on her last album...

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure she would have been upset if she'd thrown herself downstairs, Nick. Anyone would be. I think your sources were accurate, about that part, at least.

Who likes the new re-releases, then?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What new re-releases?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The albums. I bought the boxful of treasures so I don't know if I'll bother w/ these.

I will buy them of course. Sigh.

Masked Gazza, Friday, 6 May 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

andyjack, you're not amateurist posting under another ID, are you?

he's not, because i'm not a very big sandy denny fan

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Four solo albums, Dada. North Raven Grass and that. One of them looks a bit Bonnie Tyler.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

With bonus stuff? She recorded lots of stuff that never came out at the time.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

From 'An Old Fashioned Waltz'

At the end of the day (alternate take)
King & Queen of England (demo)
Like and Old Fashioned Waltz (with Fairport Converntion)
No End (solo piano version)

from 'Rendezvous'

Still waters run deep
Full moon
I'm a dreamer (demo)
Easy to slip
Moments

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e. on that Boxful of Treasures boxed set...

Oh, Mr.Miller... Arse, I should have remembered that before coming to London. Will sort out soon.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Not always sure what to make of Linda Thompson, however...no way was she anywhere near as good as Sandy.

sigh.

tonight is what it means to be young (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That's all. That's all there was.
Say Amen. Close the door.
She gave as much as she had to give
Please don't ask for more
Please don't ask for more
That's all. The curtain's down.
The lights are up. Go home.
Did I care?
Was I in love?
In love enough to know
In love enough to know

There's precious few that line that road
She welled from deep and overflowed
There's no cup to hold the past
Too rich to drink, too rich to last
That's all

Well, you wish
But don't wish for me
As if a wish
Could cheat the fall
Oh just believe
And leave it be
There's beauty in what's brief
There's beauty in what's small
That's all

There's some who dare and some who shine
And some who only drag behind
And some who reap what others sow
When memories fail well who's to know

That's all. That's all there was.
Say Amen. Close the door.
She gave as much as she had to give
Oh please don't ask for more
Please don't ask for more
That's all.

John 2, Friday, 6 May 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I remembered, Keith, but I was diplodocusmatic about it. No worries, innit.

ten months pass...
awesome

amateurist0, Thursday, 16 March 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Awesome indeed, but a shocking amount of overlap with previous box set. I think I only counted something like twelve new tracks for $70. I didn't bother.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought you weren't a fan, amateurist?

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Thursday, 16 March 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I love her version of Blackwaterside. The droning guitars bring it very close to the Velvet Underground & at times it almost sounds as if it's going to turn into How Soon is Now.

bham, Thursday, 16 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

The alternate version of "The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" is very droney/trancey as well. One of my favorite Fairport tracks.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 16 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't like either the full album version or the demo of 'I'm A Dreamer', but I love the song so much. The only time i've heard it done justice is one of Richard and Linda Thompson's takes from the Gerry Rafferty 'Shoot out The Lights' sessions, the best of which is on Linda's 'Dreams Fly Away' retrospective comp.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I don't get the idea of TWO box sets either -- although that tracklisting looks pretty cool, I'd have to check the overlap w/ the Who Knows box. pissed me off when The Band put out two box sets too. I mean, I'm a box set fanatic -- and a Band and Denny fanatic -- but geez, get it right the first time..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:27 (twenty years ago)

I have both and didn't find much overlap upon first impression... I should investigate again but Boxful Of Treasures has a ton of great stuff not on Who Knows, and vice versa (esp the Fairport version of "Quiet Joys" and that lovely romp through "Memphis Tennessee").

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 17 March 2006 09:18 (twenty years ago)

the other box set dates to the vinyl era...didn't it come out in 1989 or 1990 or something like that? on boyd's hannibal. (who seem to have lost the rights to nearly all the island and other lps that they had licensed through the 80s and 90s--see also nick drake, richard thompson, fairport.) and i believe it's been out of print for a long time.... no surprise that a new one should be pieced together.

that said, the fledg'ling label seems to be systematically making box sets (the artwork for which has been really spotty btw) for all the major artists of britfolk. but seeing as denny's original lps are being re-reissued one by one, i'm not sure a box set is really the best choice. in a way this project seems to date to the mid-90s heyday of box sets, when they all came in big boxes.

two months pass...

so did anyone grab that humongous sandy denny box set that was on sale mid-2010 then sold out in a few months? it was actually a bargain at about $150 but now you can only find it for upwards of $600. it's insane; pretty much everything she ever recorded.

Limited Edition 19 CD box set from the British Folk legend. Includes 11 CDs featuring Sandy's complete studio recordings with Alex Campbell, Johnny Silvo, Fotheringay, Strawbs, Fairport Convention and solo with additional content; outtakes, demos and live recordings. There are eight CDs of bonus material; unreleased songs, demos, unreleased BBC recordings, alternate takes, live recordings, acoustic versions, and rare radio interviews. Each CD is housed in an individual gatefold digipak sleeve. The box comes with a 72-page 11" square hardback book containing over 100 rare and mostly unseen photographs, Sandy's handwritten lyrics (many of which are unrecorded songs) and fascinating memorabilia. The box also contains a reproductions of a beautiful original Island press pack, an exceptionally rare A3 promo color poster for Northstar Grassman and the Ravens, a set of Postcards, the receipt for the purchase of her first piano and one of Sandy's handwritten notebooks.

i wonder, how did that box happen? i mean that has got to me one of the most--if not THE most--lavish major-label box sets ever.

by another name (amateurist), Sunday, 21 August 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

Was this ever sold in stores or just online? I never saw one, but there aren't any real record stores left where I live.

Lee547 (Lee626), Sunday, 21 August 2011 10:09 (fourteen years ago)

It wasn't an online-only release, shops could have had copies if they bought them via pre-sales from the distributor, but the numbers were very limited, hence the currently ridiculous prices.

just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 21 August 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

there's a new deluxe ed of northstar grassman coming on in sept that features a second disc of stuff that was on the box set

any major based god will swag you (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 21 August 2011 12:22 (fourteen years ago)

just read this today, don't really know who this person is?
In late 2010 Thea Gilmore was commissioned by Sandy [Denny]’s estate, in conjunction with Island Records, to write melodies for unfinished manuscripts, lyrics without music, and works in progress and so to finally bring some of Sandy’s last works to the world.

You honestly didn't know she was a boozehound? Why do you think she fell down those stairs?

She was pushed!

The North Star... reissue was mentioned a few weeks ago in this other Sandy Denny thread, which has tended to be the home of recent discussions... There Is No Proper Sandy Denny Thread! I Love Her. I Will Always Love Her.

just call me brian (krakow), Monday, 22 August 2011 07:56 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that thread is better
clip above is interesting -- is there a sandy denny documentary in the works? uploader is "sandyfilm2011"

five months pass...

ok. so i saw listed for sale a japanese "4 CD" box set edition of sandy's "north star grassman and the ravens" album. i can't find any trace of such a thing on the web.

does anyone know what this is or might be??

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 30 January 2012 06:59 (fourteen years ago)

this one?

http://www.amoeba.com/buy-stuff/detail/sandy-denny/the-north-star-grassman-and-the-ravens-mini-lp-box-set-cd--38193.html

looks like it's four albums, not a 4 disc set of one

fitzroy institution (electricsound), Monday, 30 January 2012 07:12 (fourteen years ago)

that must be it. weird.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 30 January 2012 07:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, they do this in Japan for CD reissues:

Create a 'box' based on one of the albums, then fill it with that album plus a number of other albums by the same artist, usually from around the same time. Always "lp facsimiles".

I have one for the Rolling Stones. They are particular in re-presenting all the original inserts, posters (if applicable), and inner sleeves. I have the "London Singles" with four LP minicovers inside, but they still 'compile' the tracks onto three CDs.
