I'll say Louis Jordan, too, for his good humor, his inventiveness, and the mile-wide streak of surreal silliness that runs through all those great rhythm-n-blues hits. Much as I like Big Joe, his best stuff was done with Basie (i.e., he wasn't a bandleader on a par with LJ) and at times he did come off like a bit of a blowhard.

Vote Jordan for President! Mind you, Big Joe sings about being like a one eyed cat, peepin' in a seafood store, which is an indelible and perfect image. Damn, I can't choose between these. It's like picking between ribs and chicken. Either of them before Elvis. Hell, either of them on a bad day before Elvis, and I like Elvis a lot.

Jordan's catalogue is miles deeper than Turner's.

"Much as I like Big Joe, his best stuff was done with Basie.."

???
His best stuff was solo for Atlantic. "Boss of the Blues" is one of the greatest sets ever.
THE MAN.

Turner was a great singer, and I for one like his later stuff better than his earlier. Definitely a deeper singer than Jordan, but I prefer Jordan anyway.

Jordan's classier and funnier. Turner's cooler and bigger. Edge: Jordan.
