Three Days Grace, "(I Hate) Everything About You"

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Home" would be a much better TDG example, I think.

going the other route, I'd say Seether & Amy Lee's "Broken"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"

roger, Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha picking one TDG song is like picking one Simple Plan song really.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I like "Just Like You," though. Wicked guitar tone on that one.

Uhh, I guess The Vines - "Ride" would work for this too.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Run DMC: Sucker MCs

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonic Youth - "Four6"
Petey Pablo - "Freek a Leek"

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Make 'Em Say Unngh!"

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, basically every ballad by Backstreet Boys or New Kids On The Block.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Make 'Em Say Unngh!"

oh yeah.

not so good on Petey Pablo though.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcy Playground -- "Sex and Candy"

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Killers "Where is she?"

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcy Playground -- "Sex and Candy"

OTM but still BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Collective Soul, "Shine""

everything you hate about rock & roll?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 May 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"In da Club" by 50 Cent.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 May 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

everything I hate about "grunge"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Cast - Finetime

stet (stet), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"In da Club" by 50 Cent.

Oh Alex. You're such a curmudgeon! Here, pick "Wanksta" instead. Ok.

....also: all emo.

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"break stuff"
"heavy metal drummer"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"everything I hate about "grunge""

wow, i don't think I even knew it was grunge. I would have said hard rock, or boogie rock, or rock from florida, or southern rock, or 70's-inspired 90's stadium rock, or diy one-man studio rock, or christian rock, or pop-rock before I thought of grunge.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 May 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

or wait, are collective soul from georgia? i don't know why i think of florida when i think of them.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 May 2005 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Celine Dion-My Heart will go on....although I think I might come up with some other examples that are just as good...any song by Jessica Simpson or Mariah Carey, maybe...

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Sunday, 8 May 2005 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

collective soul certainly works for me as a "what I hate about christian rawk," grunge I'd go with something by Alice In Chains, probably.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 8 May 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

specifically "shine" by collective soul, I mean

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 8 May 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oasis, "Wonderwall"

Cream, "Sitting On Top Of The World"
(Which is not to say that I hate all of blues, or Brit-blues, or even Cream. But I do hate certain elements of each; and so many of 'em are in there.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Reef - "Place Your Hands"
Toploader - "Dancing in the Moonlight"
Is "Dem Bones" Alice in Chains? That one.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what genre is Reef, exactly?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Shite-rock.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Hell - "Blank Generation"

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Longer answer. Reef represent that kind of joyless pointless re-appropriation of hoary Hard Rockin' cliches that are great and enjoyable when originally done but are about as appetising as a 3 day old crisp and mayo sandwich when done 20 years after the fact by fuckwits.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Alex. You're such a curmudgeon! Here, pick "Wanksta" instead. Ok.

At least "Wanksta" is kinda funny. "In Da Club" is just bullshit from beginning to end.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 May 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, you can SO tell it's not even shorty's actual birthday.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 8 May 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Daryl Worley, "Have You Forgotten?"

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 8 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought we didn't hate "genres" on ILM.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 8 May 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the only genre i really seem to hate these days is what can only be described as Post Green Day.

$V£N! (blueski), Sunday, 8 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oasis - "Lyla" encapsulates everything I hate about british rock.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 8 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

or wait, are collective soul from georgia? i don't know why i think of florida when i think of them.
They're from Atlanta. However, you might be thinking of either Creed or Seven Mary Three, who are both from Florida and sound similar.

That's not cocaine! It's Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 8 May 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

In Da Club?? Whatevs. Blank generation? It seems like anything by Generation X is a much better example. At least u didn't say "love comes in spurts".

my addition: the new beck CD (genre: post-odelay goofy sampled alt rock)
"Glam Slam" (genre: post- Sign O' The Times PRINCE, and yes that does deserve it's own genre)
and I double up on ur "Make Em Say UHHH"

tonyD (noiseyrock), Monday, 9 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Josh Groban count as a genre? Cuz if he does, whatever howlingly godawful song I saw him do on VH-1 a few weeks ago encapsulates everything I hate about Grobanism, even though it's the only song I've heard by him.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 9 May 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck. Somebody beat me to "In Da Club". That ear-cloggin pile of nonsense set back my attempts to make my fellow indie-fux pay attention to worthwhile hip hop recordings for at least a year...

It should be noted that the genre? I guess I'm referencing is "Badly executed mainstream hip hop". Not sure if that counts...

John Justen (johnjusten), Monday, 9 May 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Threads that encapsulate everything you hate about ILM...

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Monday, 9 May 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

at least half of these songs are incredibly awesome

Sym Sym (sym), Monday, 9 May 2005 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

haha dee otm, you just made me laff

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 9 May 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the Killers - all of their songs

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate the killers too but i don't hate their genre.

cindy margolis holocaust (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think you have to hate the genre. i think these are just songs that remind you of the stuff you do hate in a genre. but you could love the genre. this is my guess, anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

if i could think of a song title by the new post-norah crop of adult-contemporary cocktail lounge entertainers (michael buble, nellie mckay, and other such people i'm supposed to find "astoundingly talented") i'd post that.

cindy margolis holocaust (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i still kinda want to hear nellie mckay. just based on what i have read. she sounds nuts.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

any song by papa roach.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

there are too many nu-metal and pop-punk examples for me to choose from. and metalcore examples. and emocore examples. and emoscreamopopcorepunkmetal examples.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Madeleine Peyroux encapsulates everything I hate about that Norah Jones/cocktail jazz genre. Unfairly, I base this judgement solely on her album cover. That's what I get for going to Starbucks.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 9 May 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

meanwhile, i was watching some horrible george harrison tribute concert thing the other nite, and ravi's other little girl was SLAMMIN' that sitar. i'd buy an anoushka album if i saw one somewhere.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

watching that thing reminded me of some ravi shankar interview where they asked him how george's sitar playing was and he said something like: eh, you know, george was a nice guy, he liked the music, we were friends, um, er, check please!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

george's sitar playing was probably about as good as his moog playing!

cindy margolis holocaust (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 9 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Did George play the moog on "Only a Northern Song"?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Only a Nothern Song has a Moog? It sounds totally organ to my ears.

Run DMC's Sucker MCs hopefully will not polarize Geir and me in future threads.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Aphex Twin - "Milkman"

(oddly i don't hate the song or the genre, but it seems to include all the defining characteristics of generic and worthless IDM)

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, who said by hating aspects of a genre you thereby hated the genre?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Only a Nothern Song has a Moog? It sounds totally organ to my ears.

The Beatles didn't use a Moog until the "Abbey Road" album, so you are completely right here.

Run DMC's Sucker MCs hopefully will not polarize Geir and me in future threads.

Not that you are right about everything though :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

at least half of these songs are incredibly awesome

Several, in fact most of them define a genre. Which also means that whoever doesn't like the genre will see them as encapsulating everything they hate about the genre.

I picked "Sucker MCs" because it is the most minimalist and least melodic hip-hop track I can think of, and because it was innovative in that it moved hip-hop away from melody/harmony.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

also, note that "grunge" was in quotes. I'm talking about the stuff rushed out to cash in c. '93-'96 (at the latest)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what genre is Reef, exactly?

Like Bush, they belong in the "grunge" genre.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Break Stuff"

J (Jay), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)
