Modern Hip-hop minimalism roll call

So in honor of the Ying Yang Twins releasing the same awesome song twice, I'm trying to remember the the songs that led to such tiny, sparse, quiet pitter-patter on the radio.

As far as I remember, "Grindin'" started this whole mess (not that it didn't have it's roots in the skeletal 808s of Run DMC and blahblahblah).

Off the top of my head...

Clipse - "Grindin'"
Ms. Jade - "Big Head"
Neptunes and Roscoe P. Coldchain - "Hot"
Murphy Lee - "What Da Hook Gon Be?"
Young Gunz - "Can't Stop Won't Stop"
Snoop Dogg - "Drop it's Like It's Hot"
Ying Yang Twins - "Wait (The Whisper Song)"
Ying Yang Twins - "Pull My Hair"

Any others to contribute?

That new Missy song "On & On" is pretty minimalist.

Oh yeah, in the Steve Reich sense of the word, ALL hip-hop is "minimalist" so keep it to yourself and stick to the topic!

You forgot the big one:

J'Kwon - Tipsy

young gunz - 'set it off' and 'friday night'
frontline - 'bang it'

xcixxorx, Monday, 9 May 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

if "friday night" counts then memphis bleek's "get low" counts.
luda's "potion"?
big boi feat bun b, big gee 'n gee rock - "808"
was the roscoe "hot" beat the same as the skillz "va banger"? neverless,
skillz - "together"

ghostface feat trife - "milk 'em" too, i'd venture.

Baby - "What happened to that boy?"

808's and Run DMC? I'll keep it to myself. Good advice.

i always think of "what happened to that boy" as massive, rather than spare - that bass drop, woah.

jigga what jigga who

we're casting a pretty wide net for the definition of "minimalism" here, aren't we? some of these tracks have quite a lot of different sounds and layers.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

you might as well call this "rap songs that don't have much other than vocals and drum sounds roll call"

Al (sitcom), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Way You Move is half-minimalist, and the lyrics reflect it-- "the whole room fell silent (Shhhhh)" as the chorus cuts out.

>you might as well call this "rap songs that don't have much other >than vocals and drum sounds roll call"

Works for me.

About half of Missy's This Is Not A Test qualifies.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i recently described dmx's "flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood" album (a particular favourite chez weasel the last few months) as 'spare gothic minimalism'.

this is not the case for every track on it (probably not even half) but penultimate track "the heat" is a particularly good example of it, i think.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think of "What Da Hook Gon' Be" as especially minimalist, although I suppose minimalism is the ideology at work in the song.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like if I can't count the number of different drum/synth sounds and samples in a beat on one hand, I shouldn't call it 'minimalist'. almost everything here fails by that definition (and there's plenty out there that doesn't).
