Has anyone done this deal? I have to admit, being a fan of lo-fi material, it's really hard to pass up.

Should I just include a check with a piece of paper requesting the albums I want?

Alao, I wanted to use this thread for recommendations on which 20 albums to get.

Christian, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh just get the first twenty. Then when you have another $80 spare, get the next.

(I'm sorta hard with this in that I think just about all the albums have their virtues. Hmmm...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've done it. I sent a note and check and since I didn't have any albums at the time, I asked him to pick. He ended up sending me a mix from earliest to most recent packed in chronological order. I had the CDs within 2 weeks of sending my check. Do it, it's well worth it.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Where is this deal from - Link?

coorwood.com

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I have only Ready for the House, Blue Corpse, and Foreign Keys, and Ready for the House is like 10x better than the other two. I like all three, though.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Is there anywhere on the web that I can hear samples of Jandek's work? After reading a few articles about him, I was a bit unconvinced -- I know several lo-fi musicians who are similarly obsessive and reclusive.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

you could try WFMU.org:

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

i've done it too. admittedly i've probably only listened to half of them. i did it before 'modern dances' etc were reissued so i missed out on my favourite period. there must be another 20 by now though so maybe i should do it again..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

The only Jandek I have is "Later On"...I like it but I don't know if it's one of his "best" ones....Ned?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I notice he's released some 5 long-players since I last looked at a discography maybe a year ago. LOL. Ordering (with pretty reasonable international rates) is strictly a snail-mail affair, correct?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

correct.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Due to most of his early releases being too similar, I'm going to pick and choose them on my own (sorry, Ned).

Here's what I've got so far:

Glad to Get Away
Lost Cause
Blue Corpse
Foreign Keys
Chair Beside a Window
Glasgow Sunday
Telegraph Melts
Modern Dances
Interstellar Discussion

Any mistakes there so far? Any obvious omissions?

Christian, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Ordering is snail via Corwood -- if you want to pay a hair extra you can order through Eclipse, which is how I do it (because Ed's a stand-up fellow).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

That's almost exactly what I own, Christian. But, I got Ready For The House just because it was the first. Although there is really very little difference between that one and about 20 others.

Blue Corpse, Telegraph Melts and Interstellar Discussion are the only really interesting ones that I remember. But, I never listen to them. I think Modern Dances and Chair Beside A Window were really good too. For Jandek, I mean.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I got 6 and 6 and Staring At Cellophane, too.

Unfortunate Prankster (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Foreign Keys is a good choice. That's my favorite of the ones I've heard.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I recommend The Rocks Crumble (same time period as Interstellar Discussion, equally excellent) and The Beginning, in addition to what you've got there.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

what is it, about glasgow?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, the FMU link didn't seem to contain any music.

Could someone at least tell me what's good about the actual music? None of the stuff I read even had anything good to say about it.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

The album covers are nice ...

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

i can't speak for what's objectively 'good' but the things i like about the music: the atmosphere, his voice, and his lyrics. many of his songs are genuinely moving, and "nancy sings" is a beautiful folk tune.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I've got Living in a Moon so Blue and One Foot in the North.. I'd say I like the former better..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

(And while I'm at it, once again my Jandek inspired mini-novel...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

ok..
my recommendations from the first half of his oeuvre.

0739: Ready for the House (1978)
0742: Chair Beside a Window (1982)
0743: Living in a Moon So Blue (1982)
0744: Staring at the Cellophane (1982)
0745: Your Turn to Fall (1983)
0750: Telegraph Melts (1986)
0751: Follow Your Footsteps (1986)
0753: Blue Corpse (1987)

Your Turn To Fall & Chair Beside A Window are really highlights.

Ludo (Ludo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

i am always in doubt if i should get the deal as well.. being in Europe.. International money transfers confuse me + they always cost me more money than I expected. I wish Jandek had an office in the Netherlands.

Ludo (Ludo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I love Jandek.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 August 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

I second what Tim said above. I'm totally thriving on the live discs after some initial resistence to the changes. I vastly prefer the ones with a backing band to the solo ones, but they are all very interesting listens.

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 10 May 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

Today would be a good day to listen to Jandek.

Trip Maker, Monday, 10 May 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

To be a bit more specific:

Manhattan Tuesday & Portland Thursday have my ass pretty thoroughly kicked. In fact, all the others with Matt Heyner, Chris Corsano, Richard Youngs, Alex Neilson, Heather Leigh Murray and/or Loren Connors are more than worthy listens. These folks accompany The Rep superbly.

Not really on board with London Tuesday, Hasselt Saturday or Helsinki Saturday. The latter is particularly problematic, but I think it might require a very specific headspace to be fully heard.

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 10 May 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

two years pass...

I recently sent off a check to Corwood for the first five albums. Anybody have an idea of about how long it takes to see a turnaround?

Austin, Friday, 18 January 2013 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

Well, I got the package. . . but my check still hasn't cleared.

. . .weird.

Austin, Sunday, 27 January 2013 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

I recently sent off for another five, but this time I did not go in chronological order. Just looked at the allmusic listings and did a random assortment of five 80's albums. I don't even remember which five I got, to be honest. I think they were:

Your Turn to Fall
Interstellar Discussion
Blue Corpse
On the Way
The Living End

Anybody have any thoughts on these guys?

(if I'm even remembering which ones I got — guess we'll see when that package shows up)

Austin, Sunday, 19 January 2014 00:15 (twelve years ago)

I like On The Way a lot! A side has him jamming with some more conventionally rock musicians, but it's still Jandek. B side is very quiet, mellow folk stuff.

Blue Corpse is pretty sad in tone, Seth Tisue's theory is that he broke up with "Nancy" who appears on the earlier records occasionally. It's really good, just a bit of a bummer.

Intestellar Discussion is an early "rock" Jandek album, which has a song called "Hey," with the lyrics all being "HEY!" and it's followed by "Why Did I Change a Word in the Last Song?"

barranca jagger (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 19 January 2014 00:33 (twelve years ago)

Blue Corpse is like his Berlin or something - very sad, very good

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Sunday, 19 January 2014 01:25 (twelve years ago)

which track is his 'the kids'??

displayed in brackets (electricsound), Sunday, 19 January 2014 01:55 (twelve years ago)

Blue Corpse is my favorite!

which track is his 'the kids'??

"Only Lover"

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Sunday, 19 January 2014 02:16 (twelve years ago)

I really like all of those except Interstellar Discussion, which gets a bit rough, and I can't remember much about Your Turn To Fall. "On The Way" has that "I'll Sit Alone And Think A Lot About You" or whatever track, which I adore.

I have The Living End on LP and that's a good one too.

sleeve, Sunday, 19 January 2014 17:04 (twelve years ago)

Got the package today!

The ones I picked were:
Interstellar Discussion
Follow Your Footsteps
You Walk Alone
On the Way
The Living End

Oh yeah!

Austin, Saturday, 25 January 2014 22:27 (twelve years ago)

he gives his first face to face print interview in the current issue of the wire.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Saturday, 25 January 2014 23:30 (twelve years ago)

So, after one listen to each disc, I have a general question:

What do you all think of the theory that the majority of Jandek's music was recorded many years before it was actually released?

(read about the theory on Seth Tisue's page)

Austin, Sunday, 26 January 2014 14:41 (twelve years ago)

I think it's clearly not true but is an interesting "what if" story

second set all dead boys covers (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 26 January 2014 15:03 (twelve years ago)

Can you expound on why it's "clearly" not true?

Just wondering, because as far as I can tell, either side is just as plausible.

Austin, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:18 (twelve years ago)

I would say it doesn't seem true because the sound of his records changed a lot, his voice changed a lot, and there's no real reason to suspect it was all done at once (making records as you go rather than during shot period of time seems like more of the default mode).

Mark, Sunday, 26 January 2014 22:14 (twelve years ago)

I noticed he has the cover of The Wire this month. Not been keeping up with him at all so don't know what that ties in with.

Stevolende, Sunday, 26 January 2014 22:17 (twelve years ago)

He's doing three consecutive shows in London in mid-February.
