Does ILM need a FAQ?

And what would be in it?

Inspired by okneale asking what a rockist is - admittedly a question with is a) very good, and b) unanswerable, though it has led to entertaining pub convos about eg rockist taste in men.

Tom, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes. i think a glossary defining a lot of terms that people thrown around here loosely would be nice.

todd burns, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What I really need are translation tool for everything mark s posts.

Melissa W, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Melissa W, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A glossary-of-terms and, mabye, a House Rules might be helpful.

Always wondered: What does "RFI" mean?

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Request for Information.

DeRayMi, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just please promise to put "mentalist" in there. I thought it meant like in the phrase "You're mental if you don't like that record, dude!" but now I'm not so sure.

Clarke B., Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A Search ILM category at the bottom of the opening page would be so nice.

Arthur, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

arthur there IS an ILx search engine : best bookmark it, since greenspun stylee won't let us put it on page one, don't think (= thinXoR, melissa)

haha attempted defs of "rockist", "indie", "cockfarmer" etc would lead to EVEN MORE ARGUMENTATIVE CIRCULAR MENTALISM hurrah

mark s, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dastoor has jr moderator privs, no? he could do a fine FAQ if it meant links to helpful threads. "Here is where we thrashed out FORMALISM"; "Here Tarden opened a discush on ABORTION" etc...

maybe when i get my new superfast computer i will do some of this too. perhaps i can get a guggenheim grant

mark s, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks, Mark. I bookmarked it once in the past and then something went haywire in my computer and erased all my bookmarks. Still, there's a Search ILE thread category over there, why not one over here?

Arthur, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

because over here the ubermoderator retired owing to pressure of actual real live paying work and the untermoderators (who include me i'm sorry to say) have left the categorisation of the threads untackled for i think eight months oops (and the ILM search engine is a still-uncategorised thread)

mark s, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. Links to rockism, indie, britney, rap & few other "definitive topic" threads. Also to the throwdown.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling you are also an untermoderator IIRC: do not demand what you can do for yourself!!

mark s, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Sterling. Ya punk. Er, wait, am I one as well? I can't remember!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not sure we need a FAQ. But we do need to do more to prevent repeat threads - not in itself a problem but they do tend to give certain foakes opportunities to give repeat answers. (Or to put it another way we could have a FAQ with Qs like "What does DG think of The Strokes?" "What is Ned's favourite LP?" and "Why doesn't Melissa like Vespertine?" This would save a lot of time all round. ;-))

A glossary would be nice. The 'one question per day' rule should be enforced. There should be a (more) prominent message about checking for similar past qns added to the "Ask A Question" routine. Another thought: how about a new rule that you cannot ask a new qn until you've first revived (by adding a new opinion or asking a supplementary qn) one thread that's been dormant for 6 months?

Jeff W, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I scrapped the one question per day rule, actually. And people don't seem to be abusing their newfound freedom really (except for me ha ha). Repeat threads is a hassle. Actually though one of the things I like about Lusenet is that a blue-lined "We've discussed this" is much nicer and more productive than the "Oh god a newbie" attitude on unarchived boards.

Tom, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is there any way of making the categories more useable? I mean, the only one I can think of that _really_ does what it's supposed to is Momus Momus Momus...

I reckon people get the hang of you cockfarmers pretty easily, though- after all, nobody ever came up with a definition of rockism, so just point 'em to that discussion thread...

emil.y, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is Ned's favourite LP?

Hey, I might change my mind!

*years pass*

Or not.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is rockist taste in men the opposite of slutty taste in women? That is, does 'rockist' modify 'taste', as suggested by the word order, and are we meant to think of the analogue wrt men? Or do you mean men with rockist taste?

AMMO CITY: Sex, drugs or rock 'n' roll?
NICK VALENSI: Rock 'n'roll, because you know the rewards. If you’re going to try and be successful in music you’ve got to have a passion for it, and sex and drugs is kind of a lame thing to be passionate about.

Someone who fancies Nick Valensi satisfies both definitions. I don't fancy him, though.

Kara Fig, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The convo IIRC was between me, Pete, Emma, Starry, Edna Welthorpe and RickyT. I suggested that everyone had rockist attitudes towards *something* and as I recall claimed that Edna had rockist taste in films. Emma then asked what she had rockist taste in and it was suggested she had rockist taste in men. I'm not actually sure there was any evidence for this but it was a nice concept. And we were in the pub.

Tom, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if sean and i get anywhere w.categorising, my idea - which i haf not yet discussed w.sean even tho i promiseed i wd email him a week ago - is that the OLD CATEGORIES w.confusing names would no longer be used and just left to stagnate, and NEW AND CLEAR CATEGORIES would be started instead (i haf a list of ideas, but it needs refining which is why i didn't send it on yet sean, sorry)

an FAQ explaining the old cats and why they can't be renamed - or anyway THAT they can't be renamed - wd prob be in order. TAKING SIDES, CLASSIC OR DUD and SEARCH AND DESTROY are all clear enuff. EVERYONES TALKING ABOUT POP MUSIC is no londer wieldy, as nearly everything would end up in it.

I haf finally decided what my new computer is going to be after only four months havering, but I haf not yet spent cash money on it. Once it lands on my desk, all dreams = reality .

mark s, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An illustration of the above argt is that mark s has rockist taste in categories.

Tom, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

While rolling the stone back up the hill, Mark, you can always just re-categorize everything in an old and silly category.

Josh, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What I have rockist taste in (apart from rock) = beer.

RickyT, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am often thinking about doing massive categorisation project, but the task gets more daunting by the day. ILM categorising is a very clunky slow process. Perhaps an external webpage might be better? Also, I keep thinking Greenspun is going to disappear in a puff of smoke one day, rendering it a fool's project.

One thing that would be good is to have a webpage dedicated to the freefind ILM search, which is much better than a half-arsed google one (though I sometimes need to do both to find the thread I'm after as neither are comprehensive). At the moment I go to alex in manhattan's Sex and Sunshine blog, which has the freefind ILM search box on it. Is there another way? I think someone tried to paste the code into a thread but it didn't work for some reason.

N., Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes josh i wondered abt that: there is that anomalous thread the pinefox kept complaining abt, and you said YES ONE DAY I MAY MOVE IT, PINEFOX

btw last night i tried to find MOBB DEEP the JOY DIVISION OF RAP on ILM Search and it foind it, but when I clicked it said it had been deleted... was there a flame war on it? i don't recall it being an especially obnoxious thread?

mark s, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If someone can e-mail me the code for the ILM and ILE search then I will make a grand search and intro page and put it on freakytrigger.co.uk.

Tom, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You could just put the ILM search thread in a category of its own, so people can find it easily, but Tom's idea is good too.

DG, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Nick for mentioning my little blog. Actually I never use the ILM search box there. I use the following bookmarklet which should at least work for IE4+: ILM search.

The easiest is just to drag and drop the above link to the Links menu bar. Then you are just one click away from an ILM search wherever you are on the internet. Does it work for you?

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't work for me. I am on Mac IE5.

N., Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, I guess it either has to do with you being on a Mac and/or with the javascript. Is javascript activated in your IE settings? Does any search bookmarklet on the bookmar klets page work on your machine Nick? If not I guess it has to do with the javascript.

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have javascript on. Yes, the ones on that page work. It's just yours that doesn't. You're rubbish.

N., Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're rubbish.
You don't expect me to help you any more after this, do you? It works fine on my computer. Do it yourself! ;-)

alex in mainhattan, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I recall I DID move that thread eventually. But I don't think I did anything to that Mobb Deep thread, wherever it is.

Josh, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mobb Deep: the Joy Division of hip-hop?

Is this linking for you: it ain't for me. Perhaps N.'s puff is already in (slow) effect?

mark s, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once read somewhere that to be rockist meant you hated rock. It inferred that the term was invented in 1982.

Chris Lyons, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would rather that you found the thread by hand, Mark. It might have something to do with the search engine (maybe Greenspun changess threads' links).

There was talk on one of the C@lum threads of putting something on the FAQ about the role of moderators and how to alert them. I think this is a good idea.

the role of the moderators is already discussed on the FAQ (it could possibly be expanded and clarified): how to alert them is also in fact already signalled in the FAQ

the FAQ can be found at the bottom of this (and every other) page

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I would please point out that there should be - and should be CHECKED - a shouting for moderator thread on ILM. Some people post only to ILM, and I'm sure it's not just me.

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, the list of moderators in the FAQ is VERY out of date, and there is nothing about the Shouting For Moderators threads. Perhaps this would be helpful to be included?

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

there is actually a link to the current Shouting for the Moderators thread, kate (however it's a fair point that no one twigged till yesterday that you're self-excluded from ILE and therefore can't access it!)

the moderators list is indeed out of date: i'll try and remember to update it at the weekend, if no other kind mod feels like doing it in advance of me

Are there any shortcuts to the boards?

ile.ilxor.com is a shortcut to the I Love Everything New Answers page.

no it isn't x 2

StanM, Friday, 24 August 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

By coincidence, I read ILX's FAQ page for the first time yesterday. I found out some things I didn't know, which added some useful context. For instance, given the familiar way some people talk to each other here, seem to know each other by real name, and so forth, I wondered whether some contributors here know each other in real life. Then, in a subsection of the FAQ page labelled "Do you all know each other in real life?," I saw this line -- "No. (To be honest nearly all of the Londoners do know each other)" -- which cleared it up to some extent.
