The painless birth of a masterpiece.

Flip side to the other question: the great/classic record that the band/artist just came in and banged out in a day or two. Extra points for having the same massive scope as Difficult Masterpieces. (But no live albums permitted.) Good example: Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade, which is almost all first takes, recorded and mixed in less than 4 days, start to finish.

Special bonus to Little Richard's "Keep A-Knockin'," which was actually recorded in LESS than its playing time.

yeah? how?

duane, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah anyway, an answer - the Gordons 1st album was done in 1 night, recording & mixing & mastering & everything (i think)

I believe it's actually just about 50 seconds' worth of tape of Little Richard and the Upsetters, firing on more cylinders than they even had, at some radio station; later, somebody cut it up and spliced it into a 2 1/2 minute single (including extending the brief drum intro into the thing that Led Zep ripped off years later).

The Minutemen's _Double Nickles On The Dime_ comes to mind here.

Wasn't 'Isn't Anything' recorded in a week?

stevo, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not an album BUT: the original run of No-U-Turn singles - each one recorded in a couple of hours due to the time-deceleration capacities of weed.

Tim, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, lots and lotsa jazz records--Bitches Brew in three days, f'rinst. the new Jay-Z is said to have been done in a week. allegedly 3 Feet High & Rising was a weeklong session as well. In Utero was two weeks. Please Please Me was thirteen hours for ten of its fourteen songs--not too frickin' bad for a record that CHANGED EVERYTHING.

Siouxsie and the Banshees' Nocturne, recorded in one night...which was not too hard, seeing at it was a live album.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh fiddle, *now* I see Douglas' qualification. I STAND BY MY ANSWER REGARDLESS.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bringing back A Love Supreme and Kind of Blue.

Ramones.

Vic Funk, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grr.

Vic Funk, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grr again.

Vic Funk, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, "Double Nickels" turned into a double album because Minutemen felt pressured by the ambitious release of "Zen Arcade"... acc. to the "Our Band Could Be Your Life" book.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyone ever hear of Ed's Redeeming Qualities? all of their albums were recorded in like four hours.

tyler, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At this rate we should bring up the Raunchy Young Lepers again. Most of their works were masterpieces. Sort of.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't Trout Mask Replica recorded in an afternoon?

Baxter Wingnut, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

erm has no one heard of writing and rehearsing songs? And Trout Mask Replica was *so* not recorded in an afternoon.

Little Richard wins, so far.

Nirvana - Bleach, and Nick Drake - Pink Moon. Not (IMO) masterpieces, but both fine albums recorded double-quick. Also Black Sabbath's first album was recorded quickly; I'm not going to comment on its "masterpiece" status.

Belle & Sebastian's first LP was recorded in three days. A lot of people are quite keen on it.

Probably explains why their last album wasn't much cop in comparison, it took bloody ages. Murdoch said it literally drove him to drink.
