Bay Area Hip Hop [usually] Sux

so i've lived here for 6 years or so and have been fairly unimpressed with the hip hop scene. it's either very indie (zion i, quannum, heiro [are they still around?], etc), turntablists (san jose and them asians love that shit), experimental or live instrument stuff (mission, live human). the local labels are all very house-y or jazzy or are just releasing stuff from other cities (ubiquity, om, abb). whenever i go to clubs, they're still playing all the same "golden era" native tongues/gangstarr type shit.

i know there's been Too $hort. Valejo has E40 and Mac Dre and Keak da Sneak (none of whom i've ever listened to).

i HATE "Hyphy" (sorry adam) and all other bay stuff that i've heard thats's been getting airplay recently.

i just heard The Frontline and they seem pretty good.

so educate me on what's really good. there's gotta be something.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

SF itself is pretty weak, the major talent's always been in the East Bay, but a sampling would include E-40, Rappin 4-Tay, Digital Underground, Too $hort, Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, the Coup, Invisible Skratch Picklz, Digital Underground, Tupac, DIGITAL UNDERGROUND....

(and if you haven't heard any of E-40 and his stable of folks, you are seriously seriously missing out on some bugged shit w/great tongue-twisting lyrics)

Ubiquity and Om are not hip-hop labels.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

see also: the Luniz, B-Legit, the Click, JT the Bigga Figga

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

i know they're not hip hop labels, but they're putting out hip hop lately and i couldn't think of any other labels. how weak is that?

there's not even a single hip hop store in the city. but walk down lower haight and you have like 20 techno stores

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

frontline is probably the best of the "new bay," imo. zion i are good, hiero is still around (they just released a live[?] album) and "hyphy" is GREAT. there's andre nickatina, luniz, foreign legion, done deal fam, bully wit fullys, demoliton men (djs)... as far as local labels putting out local "street" stuff, try bayside distrobution. maybe if we knew what you like from your hip hop?

one time gaffled 'em up, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

also, how many of these people that you mentioned are current?

make me a mix for whenever we'll finally meet up

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

xpost obv

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

as far as stores, try Frisco Street Show. rasputins carries a lot of local stuff, as does amoeba.

one time gaffled 'em up, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

haha, yeah I listed mostly old (ie 90s) shit. fwiw folks like JT and E-40 are still makin records. And the two hip-hop record stores I used to frequent (on Market St and lower Haight, respectively) both closed a while ago. Amoeba's hip-hop section IS pretty great tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

i guess saying there's no hip hop store is kinda dumb because any smaller store within a 5mile radius of amoeba will get crushed.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

This is the mix you want. Bay Area hip-hop does not really suck.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

what kind of hip hop do i like? well i'm pretty anti-backpacker. dudes who get too many words stuck in their mouth with no rhythm really piss me off. i like fun, synthy beats. i like soul. i like weird stuff. i like the south. i like detroit. i like the diplomats.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

that mix looks pretty promising. Jaxon this stuff is pretty up your alley, going by yr description (synth-y beats, kinda southern, weird, tons of words but great senses of rhythm - but really what sells me on Bay Area hip hop is the slang. its endlessly entertaining, and often really fucking goofy)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Even if you live in a city that has a hip hop store, that's no guarantee that your problems are solved. Maybe Fat Beats has changed since, but I've always been very disappointed with the L.A./Los Feliz Fat Beats (or I guess it moved to Melrose now?) (they started in ATL, opened up a store in NYC, then one in L.A., I think).. you can't preview shit! If you're primarily selling vinyl, you gotta have some form of allowing people to preview records. Sorry.

I still stand by Beat Street in Vancouver being the best hip hop store in the west coast... the staff there are very nice and knowledgeable, and you can preview practically everything.

Seattle has decent outlets for previewable hip hop vinyl.. especially cheap promos of the latest singles.. no dedicated store that I know of (although, I walked by this store called Respect Records once, which looks like a hip hop store, but I'm not sure.. I think I need Rickey or Matos or Segal to help me out here).. but in any case, if I can find hip hop here.. just not necessarily at a hip hop only store, per se.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

in fact, I'm gonna order that mix tape right now.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

beat streat was pretty cool. and they had a ton of other stuff. a great soul section and a dancehall section. the guys there were really nice and when i asked a question about Soca, the guy pulled a ton of records out for me.

i think i told you i was pissed that i went there second. at that store around the corner i paid like CAN$30 for a Rasputins Stash record and then 5minutes later found the same record at Beat Streat for 16. boo

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

JaXoN are you bringing me a mix tonight? I threw together a grime CDR for you.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

oh shit, what do you want?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

i have a ton of detroit downbeat stuff (like 20 albums) i'm about to burn for mullygrubber. i'll get the best stuff that'll fit on one cd to bring for you.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I want that nu-rnb shit you are talking up.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

hmmm. forgive me for not having known that.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't particularly like backpacker stuff, but the stuff on that mix isn't my cup of tea either. My favorite thing to come out of the area in the last three years was the D-Styles CD.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

that's turtablist stuff, right? i've never actually heard his cd, but i was given some D-Styles vs DJ Shadow cd a while back from the guys at hiphopsite.com. i think i should find that thing and throw it on ebay (looks like it's going for about 25$)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

turntablism only goes so far for me - it's much more fun to watch live than it is to listen to on record, tho I have some Shiggar Fraggar Show stuff that's kinda fun, just cuz its so goofy and unpredictable.

DJ Shadow is unbelievably overrated.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

[[[DJ Shadow is unbelievably overrated.]]]

I second this. In fact, I'm so out of the loop, I thought they had stopped rating him altogether a while back.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

alex i finally got around to listening to junglizm and i'm LOVING it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

(speaking of bay area cd-r hand-offs... ok i know i'm a little off-topic here)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Woo hoo! I am actually listening to that right now, Slocki.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

observe the ongoing Shadow fandom:
TS: RJD2 "dead ringer" vs. DJ Shadow "the private press"

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i gotta clear off space for it on my ipod so i can take it out of my dvd player! (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

D-Styles is a turntablist, yeah. But he's really more like someone like Kid Koala or People Like Us than he is like the X-Men or his old mates, the I.S.P., at least on that particular record (Phantasmagorea). It's a study of off-putting juxtapositions... porn samples, interviews with serial killers. It's pretty fun to listen to.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Saying 'Bay Area Hip Hop Sux' is just ignorant. It's like you never heard of Digital Underground or something. (Not to mention Tupac, $hort Dog, Del the funky homosepian, the Click, the Coup, Blackalicious, Souls of Mischeif, the Alkaholiks, Luniz, Dru Down, Mac Dre, YukMouth, Paris, Mystic Journeymen, RBL, JT, etc etc etc)

Gab is great and all but 4th Dimensional Rocket Ships is a big let down after how good Blazing Arrow was.

I agree, though after a good year of conflicted backpacker-self-loathing and constant spins of David Banner I went back to Nia and it still holds up great.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Hey, sorry all you can find is "white" rap shows. That's all your problem.

Planet Asia, Balance, Frontline, TheTeam, YaBoy, San Quinn, are the best "lyrical" type cats. I'd place bets on TheTeam & YaBoy doing it biggest because they ALSO seems ta have the best beats situation combined with the freshness...

here's a song of YaBoy's with RickRock production
http://s30.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0NF0W3I9PQY8Z14ODAPGG1GBDA
sh*t's pritty danged hard, ay. not exactly a sure-fire-hit but it's a bit banging. just thought I'd share...
& here's an even better Cult-classic track by the same cat called 16's,samples STARWARS theme & the sh*t is suuuuuuuuuppper-hard. but not no party sh*t. but haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard like twhaaat.
http://s3.youshareit.com/files/ea9f4872a56e8d47949529fc0986569c.html

^^make sure ta check for the snipped-muppet samples covering the curses, = haaaawt!!

if ya don't know bout TheTeam then I can't really help you. them cats are pure spit-blooded fire.
TurfTalk, Keak, Federation & all that hyphy sh*t are sum of the craziest nuttiest styles ever, but I can see if ya don't appreciate the steez. sh*t heat though...

secondly, in doses the Bay backpack rap sh*t is great. Lyrics Born is a genius. Planet Asia, Pep Love & Encore are all beasts. Mission/Crown City are pretty damn tight. P.U.T.S. are decent for that True School sh*t. um, yeah latter-day Souls Of Mischief & them Zion-I cats can be annoying/grating after too much & so can Blackalicious but like I said,--in DOSES the sh*t's great... I'd advise just NEVER listen ta anticon. then you're fine, I don't think there really even is any "white backpacker" scene here besides them...

Cavebaby Jesus, Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

don't really know this genre very well so at the risk of sounding like dick clark -- i def. think bay area is lucky to have e-40 - who seems to be pretty underappreciated-esp. considering the stuff i've heard is totally accessible; has a lot of catchy pop-ish hooks, but depth too. his early stuff atleast was totally ahead of its time and listening to it now seems to have aged pretty well. i can drop you some tracks if you like. haven't heard his new stuff to comment.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if there've been any threads about sense of place in music, but I have to say, I never liked hyphy from my cursory listens before, but when I was riding around San Fran on a sunny day it started to sound so good on the radio.
