a: yes.

jess, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's heard that Herb Alpert thing and wants to make some cash off similar.

Tom, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nb: just cuz i think this an act of supreme mentalism doesn't mean i won't actually submit something.

jess, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now I really wish my copy of hiphop ejay would work.

Ronan, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HEY, I think it's an interesting idea. What makes me think that CHUCK D has lost his mind is the fact that he is on the latest Vanilla Ice record.

Gage-o, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ice is back with a brand new edition?

Nicole, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Would this be Rap Ice or Rock Ice?

Seems like Chuck D is taking his "independent musician" crusade to the limits of aesthetic sanity.

David Raposa, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Depressing.

Andy K, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a fantastic idea. Why wouldn't some kid in his bedroom be able to put together something more fresh and interesting than the ageing Bomb Squad? Of course the results are going to be patchy, but why shit all over the idea just because it's idealistic? What is so wrong with encouraging your fans to be creative and involved?

fritz, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice idea, wrong time to go ahead with it. 90 per cent of the submissions will be called "ironic" (by their creators).

Jeff W, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course the results are going to be patchy, but why shit all over the idea just because it's idealistic? What is so wrong with encouraging your fans to be creative and involved?

probably because they were once the greatest band of all time and now they're a carnival act, a roving mouthpiece for creators rights, and those guys who made "stereo-spectacular hi-fi" records to show off the new technology all in one. and, well, not a band at all.

(bitter much?)

i dont think i was pissing on it in the nylpm bit. but i also think that most of the entries WILL sound like what i suggested. and i -do- think it's going to be mostly non-hiphop iniates; as a genre hiphop has a very short memory. the kids who heard "welcome to the terrordome" playing at my desk earlier in the week (ironically) didn't know who they were. and when it's easy for kids still in high school to circulate a demo and get a call from jigga or whoever (and yes, it's not as frequent as i make it sound, about as much so as a rock band getting signed to a major, etc.) to produce a track or a single, why are they gonna waste time on these fossils? and unfortunately, these kids are the ones who COULD produce a killer p.e. album. i have a feeling that -any- public enemy record would hit the market with a resounding critical and financial splat. this reeks of publicity stunt, nothing more altruistic.

jess, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or it could be an admission that while their creative and top-selling glory days are behind them they could still use the name to inspire some kids to experiment, give people a springboard to become more well known, etc. and, as you said, to drum up some interest in a largely forgotten group.

fritz, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This seems like a good opportunity to revive this thread, which I thought was interesting but ended prematurely.

Mark, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'a roving mouthpiece for creators rights'

Yeah, like there's so many of THOSE around. Chuck D and Metallica might be at diametrically opposed ends of the spectrum but they're the only people who have come up with anything to say on the matter besides "But WE WANT OUR MUSIC FREE! AND NOT PAY! AND WE WANT RECORD COMPANIES TO KEEP MAKING POP STUFF SO WE CAN GET IT FREEEEEEEEE!!!! WAAAAAAAHHHH!!" Right on Chuck!

dave q, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Dave, you make the opinion sound like it's a bad thing. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dave: i won't agree with you until you agree with me that this whole thing (meaning everything chuck d has done in the last three years) is a publicity stunt. so nyeah.

jess, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, if it WAS a publicity stunt, it hasn't been too successful, has it?

dave q, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, but that hardly seems relevant. but it does provide an reason to GET BACK IN THE FUCKING STUDIO AND MAKE A DAMN RECORD. a record which doesn't suck, natch.

maybe chuck just needs his own burgess meredith.

jess, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They were so shite when I saw them last year, jesus I felt like burning my albums when I got home. De La Soul were way better on the same day.

Also it was all "farrakhan this, farrakhan that" for about 20 minutes in total between songs.

Ronan, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All right stop, put yourself at ease
Covenant's back with an old- arsed disease
Something! grabs my fingers tightly
And amputates them at the speedoflightly
Will it ever stop? Yo, I think not
Turn off the lights and I'll rot
To the extreme I'll decompose - that's my fate
I can't feel pain because nerves don't regenerate.

Kodanshi, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I agree with Jeff and jess that many submissions will be by ILM-type music aficionados or ironic pranksters rather than the aging PE hip hop devotees. Even though the results may sound nothing like PE, it could still potentially be a good album in its own right, not to mention a fascinating cultural indicator. If I were Chuck D, I wouldn't be doing this, but I like the idea (being somewhat indifferent towards PE's cred at this point).

Honda, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeeeaahhhh, Boyyeeeee! Chuck D is the ANTI-'LARS'. He will use his vast powers for good to undo the evil spell cast by the hideous demon Ulrich!

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Revive, just to say that, although the pacing of the thing was off (too cluttered), Revolverlution turned out to be a pretty good rekkid. And the 3 or 4 examples of the above were pretty good. The fear was misplaced.

Off out - happy New Year y'all

I miss Public Enemy.

Darn it, SOMEBODY'S gotta keep the "protest songs" genre alive.
