Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

boooooring.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

there's something I find unsavory about saying "iPod" as shorthand for "music someone listens to/endorses"

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

I kind of like how boring it is. only sore thumb is Bright Eyes, and even that's with Emmylou Harris.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Gat Decor Passion

wtf springsteen?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Maybe, just maybe
Bruce's music dropped off when
his tastes got SO WHITE

wasn't Springsteen once
obscure R&B / jazz man?
this stuff's good, but damn.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

That Lil' Jon track was a surprise.

Dammit Ronan beat me to it.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

man, I don't know what you guys were expecting (although Haikunym's disappointment seems more moderate and reasonable). I'd rather it be all sleepy and old and canonical than it be all him trying to keep up with the times and stuffing it full of Arcade Fire and DFA. let an old dude be an old dude.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

what, no Suicide ???

Korova Milkbar, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Apparently he REALLY likes the "Masked & Anonymous" soundtrack.

Do the Staple Singers, Dorothy Love (not "Core") Coates, Amos Milburn, Marion Williams, Dixie Hummingbirds, Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Cliff, Clara Ward etc. now somehow count as white?

And as weird as it is to have his intro tape include a cover of one of his own songs, where the hell did he find a Sleater-Kinney recording of "Promised Land"? I know they've covered it live (to fantastic effect), but didn't know they'd recorded it...

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

he throws his wife's stuff in there, too

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Four Tet, really?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

primal scream??

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Okay, okay, they're not white. But Paul Robeson still is!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

he throws his wife's stuff in there, too

The track he throws in happens to be some of Mike Campbell's top work.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

boooooring.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Al and Douglas OTM. Let Springsteen be Springsteen. It's really quite an elegant list, and far more diverse than it would have to be.

Now what I really want to see is Robert Plant's ipod...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Springsteen Rockist? The shocking new charges tonight at 11...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

ugh. so much bob dylan.

ihope (ihope), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if when he comes onstage, anyone yells "hey, can finish listening to the walk-in mix?"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Virgin Prunes - "Ballad Of The Man" !

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

ugh. so much bob dylan.

Where over the last 35 years could you have gotten that idea?

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know anybody bought that Slim Dunlap album.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Bruce has the same Rounder Anniversary Box that I do.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I am Springsteen?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

An easy way to tell: Have you ever kissed Clarence Clemons?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Bruce has the same Rounder Anniversary Box that I do.

ha!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Remember, this is the intro music to his earnest acoustic tour. I seem to recall the last song playing before his reunion tour a few years ago was Ice-T. But really, what was everyone expecting? Merzbow?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

you guys are just as predictable in your responses as you say Springsteen is in his choices.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

OTM. Bruce could have 5 cds created by Diplo himself and he'd still get BS from people here about being "stodgy."

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Four Tet? I'm amazed this is on his radar. He should have got Keiran to produce his latest album, or at least remix something from it.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Bruce has the same Rounder Anniversary Box that I do.

ha!

No, really, half that stuff...the Dave Van Ronk, the Beausoleil, the Holmes Bros, Beau JOCQUES (listed above as "Beau Rogues"), Dixie Hummingbirds, etc, is on the Rounder Records whatever Anniversary box they sent out in 2001.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I just want to publicly apologize to Douglas Wolk. I was clearly wrong up above, when I said that there were absolutely no songs on these lists by any people of color whatsoever. I had absolutely no idea that the Staple Singers, Dorothy Love (not "Core") Coates, Amos Milburn, Marion Williams, Dixie Hummingbirds, Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Cliff, Clara Ward etc. were African Americans! I certainly wasn't speaking more generally about the bent of the overall list and what I feel to have been a shift in Bruce Springsteen's tastes over time, or anything like that! Golly! Anyway, again, sorry, and sorry to all of ILM.

Petulantnym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

oh, i believe you all right! sort of like how someone traced the "themes" of john zorn's 1980s/90s lps to the coffee table books being featured from month to month at a certain greenwich village bookstore. disappointing.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Rockism In Motion Alert: "Sound Check" on WNYC is about to have Anthony DeCurtis talking about Springsteen!
