yeah, in a weird sad way I kind of idolized him (or at least wanted his job) when I was like 13. but his grasp of musical trivia did always seem a little exaggerated. like, how well do you really need to know your shit to earn the distinction of being the most knowledgeable VJ on MTV?

I remember as a 12 year old watching Matt go on and on about bands I'd never heard of and being amazed, but now let's be realistic, wouldn't you guys say there are people among us on ILM who know just as much as not more than he does and don't even make a schtick of it? I mean, someone like Ned Raggett seems to know just a MASSIVE ammount of shit about artists of all sorts and he's not even considered a Matt Pinfieldian knowledge freak.

Used to listen to Matt's college radio show, and later got to know him once I started DJing at the same station. The full-blown Matt Pinfield persona was already there; even then he had a coterie of admirers at all times. He was always approachable and encouraging, though - one of the first people at the station I really considered a friend. I've always wished him well.

He was good friends with my boss when I interned at SPIN sometime between the the dark ages and the reannaissance.....and he likey much the cocaine. He was also a bit of an insufferable name-dropper (and prone to music snob one-upsmanship),..albeit in an engaging and well-meaning way. The gent seriously loves music, and who can fault him for that? Hats off to him, I say. His own bands (Opium Vala and the Butt Brothers...the latter an acoustic "Indigo Boys" duo with Miles Hunt of the `Stuff)...were largely forgettable and safely forgotten.
