I also like the weird stuff, but my favorite is typical rock n' roll. I think everyone should listen to Wilco's "Summerteeth" and everyone should have about a dozen really good blues cds that are always recommended, etc. Blues cds don't wear out as fast as classic rock, for some reason.

Caetano Veloso is considered, depending on who you ask, a visionary Brasilian singer/songwriter/icon or a pompous fool, but either way, he's written some amazing music and taken part in some of Brasil's greatest popmusic moments in the last 30 years.
Ron Sexsmith is a pop/folk songwriter from Canada who is a bit of an undiscovered gem (besides the fact that he was signed to rap-central Interscope for 3 albums and has Mr. Costello calling him the best songwriter today.) He's sold like 50,000 albums total or something very sad, even on Interscope. He writes along the softer Kinks/Nilsson slant, and he's a wonderful writer. The production team on it, Froom/Blake, are amazingly sensitive, and Sexsmith writes great, short little ditties. It's pretty subdued affair though, so it's not the bangin' bits of the Kinks. But oh so amazingly sublime.

Radar Bros "The Singing Hatchet" : Makes me literally yearn for the days when I used to get high.
Smog "Knock Knock": Just fucking beautiful from beginning to end.
Slayer "Reign In Blood": On headphones walking through NYC, it makes you want to howl and scream and climb walls.
Steve Reich "Music for 18 Musicians": It never gets old to me.
Big Black "Atomizer": This one is a "i wish i was 16 again" love.
Minutemen "Post Mersh vol III" I could write pages. no shit.
Desmond Dekker "Rockin' Steady" Instantly puts me in the best of moods, regardless.
John Zorn "Locus Solus": Because it drives everyone i've ever lived with totally bonkers.
Wire "Pink Flag" : This one is the most "cliched" one, but it is just soooooo good. Over and over and over.
