what music do you love?

Ok, this is pretty basic, but what albums/artist do you think are really really good, and maybe me (or other people) should go listen to?

Blues-based rock music. Simple stuff, many people are bored to death of it. I don't listen to it to be mesmorized or challenged. I really love rock n' roll that sounds the way rock bands used to sound when they started singing somewhat meaningful lyrics (not "The Twist" or "Do You Like Good Music"), although I like the mindless sort, too. The sort of bands that aren't really pushing the envelope anymore, but still doing something interesting with each song, yet keeping it catchy or pleasing to the ear at the same time; not overly interesting with bizarre arrangements or wild sonics. You know, music you might hear on the radio.

I also like the weird stuff, but my favorite is typical rock n' roll. I think everyone should listen to Wilco's "Summerteeth" and everyone should have about a dozen really good blues cds that are always recommended, etc. Blues cds don't wear out as fast as classic rock, for some reason.

everyone here most likely owns records or is aware of the artists i love. but again, i reccommend lexaunculpt. he doesnt get nearly as much press or play for how good he is. imagine boc, the cure and autechre trapped inside one little boy.

Alex aka Lexaunculpt is indeed one talented feller. And he's most friendly, I have partaken of fish tacos with him, yum.

Finally, a Lexaunculpt record has been finished, and Orange records will be releasing it soon. Last I checked, Alex was heavily into more abstract string-related soundtrack work -- like that of Brothers Quay films, Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", Zombies "Odessey & Oracle", and MBV "Loveless". So, it'll be interesting to hear what the record sounds like.

for those curious what the noise is about .

my sleep soundtrack lately has been "happily ever after" by the cure on shuffle with all my lexaunculpt songs.

NO NEW YORK. One of those records I had waited and waited and waited for. Then I found it, bought it and listened to it. Lightning struck. Clouds appeared. And I was in 666th heaven.

I'm listening to Jim White right now, "No Such Place", and I'd forgotten how much I like it. you may have it already, but if not it's worth a look.

Especially the song "Corvair" (both versions).

Caetano Veloso and Ron Sexsmith. They're pretty different. (Ahem, Ronan. :)... ) But they're equally amazing in their own right.

Caetano Veloso is considered, depending on who you ask, a visionary Brasilian singer/songwriter/icon or a pompous fool, but either way, he's written some amazing music and taken part in some of Brasil's greatest popmusic moments in the last 30 years.

Ron Sexsmith is a pop/folk songwriter from Canada who is a bit of an undiscovered gem (besides the fact that he was signed to rap-central Interscope for 3 albums and has Mr. Costello calling him the best songwriter today.) He's sold like 50,000 albums total or something very sad, even on Interscope. He writes along the softer Kinks/Nilsson slant, and he's a wonderful writer. The production team on it, Froom/Blake, are amazingly sensitive, and Sexsmith writes great, short little ditties. It's pretty subdued affair though, so it's not the bangin' bits of the Kinks. But oh so amazingly sublime.

Iz forget to mention, for further celeb-support, Ron's last one was produced by Steve Earle. And, no, I don't get a cut of the royalties. He's just a very nice person. And great songwriting!

Albums I really honestly love:

Radar Bros "The Singing Hatchet" : Makes me literally yearn for the days when I used to get high.

Smog "Knock Knock": Just fucking beautiful from beginning to end.

Slayer "Reign In Blood": On headphones walking through NYC, it makes you want to howl and scream and climb walls.

Steve Reich "Music for 18 Musicians": It never gets old to me.

Big Black "Atomizer": This one is a "i wish i was 16 again" love.

Minutemen "Post Mersh vol III" I could write pages. no shit.

Desmond Dekker "Rockin' Steady" Instantly puts me in the best of moods, regardless.

John Zorn "Locus Solus": Because it drives everyone i've ever lived with totally bonkers.

Wire "Pink Flag" : This one is the most "cliched" one, but it is just soooooo good. Over and over and over.

DavidM, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NOTE: The break tag is "BR". The bold tag is "B" and requires a "/B".

I'll bet you thought I forgot to turn off the italics, didn't you? Well YOU, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
