House of Pain, whichever one goes "blow out your brain like Kurt Cobain"
EPMD, whichever one goes "Teen Spirit, but not like Nirvana"

mike a, Friday, 20 May 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

On one track or another SonDoobie of Funkdoobiest boasted that he Rocks like Nirvana. I think he rhymes it with "...so fuck Benihana" which is as clear a statement of his rap style as you could ask for.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Roosevelt Franklin samples "Scentless Apprentice" on their record. The one that goes MOTHERFUCKIN KURT LODER TRIED TO ROB ME AT A CITIBANK ATM!

Also, there's a track where he does "In The Pines," which he probably heard for the first time on a Nirvana record.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 20 May 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Austin OTM
I can hear him saying that right now.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 20 May 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

cam'ron "more gangsta music"

Two more for Cam fa takin over the Roc. Jeah... Jeah! It's my year so
Jeah! It's like the whole Bird Gang's in here, like Kurt Cobain's was here!

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 20 May 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't the Funkdoobiest line 'I rock like Metallica'? (Unless he ref'd Nirvana in the same song too).

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 20 May 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

not a reference, but Fashion of the Beatnuts wore a Nirvana t shirt for some of the Intoxicated Demons press photos.

mucho, Friday, 20 May 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Remember when Trech from Naughty By Nature said he bumped Nirvana in the hood?

asdfl, Friday, 20 May 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I've heard a live version of 'Insane in the Brain' where Sen Dog backs up B-real with a 'crazy insane like Kurt Cobain' at the chorus

Seuss, Friday, 20 May 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

And the winner is....

'Call It What You Want' by Credit to the Nation! That sampled 'Smells Like a Teen Spirit'.

I wonder where he is now....

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 20 May 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I have fond memories of that track... I was DJing at a party, and this annoying girl asked me whether I could play some Nirvana, and I was like, sure. Then I put "Call It What You Want" on; it starts exactly like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but then the bassline kicks in and MC Fusion starts his (to be honest, rather awful) rap. You should've seen the expression on the girl's face!

But yeah, Credit to the Nation, whatever happened to them? Just today I was listening to Chumbawamba's "Enough Is Enough" (featuring MC Fusion) and wondering about the same thing.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

M Carty -

both were used - not sure if it was the same song or not. I suppose I should go check.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Is Matty okay now Robin? No details necessary, but I know he went through a tough time a while back.

I'm pretty sure this is "Dipset's Theme". The one that goes "I sit alone in my four-cornered room listening to gangsta music," right?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

x post

For some reason I read that as "I know where he is now". Whoops.

Credit to the Nation were sadly underappreciated, the guy was a star.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Public Enemy "Do You Want to Go Our Way?"

Big Punisher (the song on the first album where he says "Sometimes rhymin' I blow my own mind like Nirvana")
