1. alex lloyd - amazing 2. something for kate - monsters 3. system of a down - chop suey 4. basement jaxx - where's your head at 5. john butler trio - betterman 6. alien ant farm - smooth criminal 7. weezer - island in the sun 8. avalanches - since i left you 9. gorillaz - clint eastwood 10. cake - short skirt long jacket 11. garbage - cherry lips (go baby go) 12. the strokes - last nite 13. something for kate - three dimensions 14. tool - schism 15. gorillaz - 19-2000 16. 28 days/apollo 440 - say what? 17. ben folds - rockin' the suburbs 18. rage against the machine - renegades of funk 19. george - special ones 20. weezer - hash pipe

As voted for by listeners. The top 10 is pretty goddamn boring with only Basement Jaxx being anything out of the ordinairy. In case you don't know, Something For Kate are an excreble aussie indie outfit - all whiny, self-important vocalese over slowly strummed rock with some of the worst 'from the heart' lyrics I've ever heard. No 1 - Alex Lloyd is, sort of, our version of Ryan Adams only less exciting. The song sounds similar to last year's winner - Powderfinger. Why, oh why does the 'youth' of my country like this sort of worthy, dull-rock. As expected, Strokes had 3 songs in the 100 and Ben Fold's had 2 - he's one of ours nowadays. The 2 Weezer tunes is a true indication of the majority of the stuff played on the station.

goeff, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In what way are Basement Jaxx something out of the ordinary?

where's your head at = who lets the dogs out

Alexander Blair, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"In what way are Basement Jaxx something out of the ordinary?" Specifically I meant something different to the standard guitar based stuff that the station thrives on. It sounded amazingly fresh and bright in comparison to the tracks around it.

philT, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alex Lloyd is rubbish of the worst kind. Whiny, sub-Buckley MOR sung by a fat wanker.

Something For Kate I can take or leave these days, but they were good once. I mainly hate them for breaking up the wonderful Melbourne band Sandpit (allegedly).

John Butler Trio? I think I just vomited my lungs.

Has anyone else noticed the message ID for this thread?

I did as soon as I posted it

Austereo> the Jays. I seriously blame the station for many of the woes in Australian music; ie the continuing prevalence of grunge-lite ten years after Seattle. Given that the listeners are given about 400 songs to choose from, most from the uninspiring playlist, I'm not surprised at the usual result. I refuse to label SFK 'indie' in any way: most of my 'indie' listening prefs. were formed in direct contradiction to what TripleJ was playing, rather than what were in the charts. SFK etc are alterno-rock, closer to American AOR than UK indie. As to why the listeners are so conservative; its the inevitable result of having an anti-pop pop station, with listener's tastes ossifying within narrow genre parameters and self congratulation @ how adventurous they are to listen to the station being constant.

charles m, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JJJ are not anti-pop! They will play any novelty song you care to name. Especially if it mentions drugs or has a swear word in the title.

I'm sick of the powderfinger-esque bands out there at the moment.. wasn't powderfinger boring enough? why create more drab? whyyyyyyy?

sobriquet, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant an 'anti-pop' station mythology. Any Triple J endorsed artist will rant about how much more special they are because our creative, non commercial youth radio station will play them. Just a load of self interest, I suppose

charles m, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...And, because they were basically freeform for the first ten years of life (late 70s and into the 80s; lots of Beefheart and Joy Division) before they went national, they're still seen as non commercial, especially in Sydney (and among the older listenership, who, it must be said, include many ABC execs).

charles m, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was joking, Charles. I did a (disappointing, though I really should have guessed beforehand) politics subject at uni last year called "Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll"... do you have any idea how many students thought liking Killing Heidi was an expression of their youthful dissidence and counter-cultural rebelliousness? I became known as "the angry guy", as I discovered later. With good fucking reason.

Tim, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now that killing hedie have been changed labels, could they assume the lofty heights of anti corporate wunder kids? or not...

goeff, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We did a whole week on music in a whole year of media/ cultural studies theory last year: our studiously pomo a. professor scheduled it on riot grrrl. When we were discussing subcultures in our lecture (its a small course) after watching a video on punk, the lecturer asked for examples of subcultures. The first answer, from one of the full fee paying 'born to rules' on our course, volunteered 'GPS Rugby players' as an example. Discussion was kinda peripheral after that (I was too infuriated to correct her). I did, however, write two, enjoyable, essays on the subject...

charles m, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
And while we're on the ranting subject...

WHY OH WHY did the "youth" (ahem) of Australia vote a gloriously shithouse cover of a Michael Jackson song at #6? There's something very wrong with us, methinks.

But if recent polls are accurate, Nova FM (in Melbourne) are yanking a sizeable slice of JJJ's audience away from them, so perhaps they'll be forced to reconsider their programming.

FireAndRain, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I became known as "the angry guy", as I discovered later. With good fucking reason.

I like this part of your mythology, Tim, I think we should all have something like this in our own.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nova is perfect for those who don't consider themselves "top 40" listeners but for whom JJJ is too "alternative".

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i prefer nova to jjj. most of the jjj whinge rock is replaced with sugar pop. there is still nu-metal, but the concentration is lower, so the sugar hit rate is better

minna, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JJJ is the equivalent of a bandwagon-jumping listener. They'll play a so-called "indie" or "alternative" band ad nauseum, until which point said band gets a big commercial hit - then said band will be removed as they are now not Hip Enough. Unless said band is as fucking wretched as Something For Kate.

(Note: I strongly urge everyone who is not familiar with this band to take a [very brief] listen. They would give Stereophonics a real run for their money in a Duel!)

EdwardO, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But how about Nickelback?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Something for Kate are indeed better than Nickleback. This is Not saying very much.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

um,.. just after reading all your answers,.. I'd like to point the question - What is considered 'Alternative' music?..and who the hell was the one that came up with people listening to JJJ and being all 'different' (so to speak)are,.. individuals',... and 'don't conform' I'm basically surrounded by people who think that they are the only ones who are individuals,.. and believe that any non-triple J people are just sheep... but that's just a load of shit, I don't believe that there isn't a group of people that don't somehow conform... and I don't care what anyone says, Merrick and Rosso aren't shit now that they've moved to Nova 969...They're fucking awesome!
