Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll

Essentially seeming to boil down to "They're GREAT!" vs. "They're SHIT!"

I'd say the album's a solid B, but my word do they ever sound like Ikara Colt. Ill-advised slow numbers aside. (This has just reminded me how much I love 'Sink Venice')

Some touches of lyrical brilliance, roughly one guitar noise, 'Emily Kane' somehow wasn't a hit (it got to... #41), just generally a pretty nice, lovable album, though 'Fight' is rubbish.

Haven't heard anything but 'Emily Kane' but that's one of my fave singles this year. What else would I search for off the album?

Try My Little Brother and Modern Art for starters. I've cooled on Formed A Band a bit.

I'd give it a solid A, rather than a B. Perhaps I'm a big softy.

It's got a pretty secure spot in my top 10 (for now, at least).

Yep, it's sexcellent. There's pretty much the bets of this new crop of British bands.. besides maybe Bloc Party which have grown on me so much that I bought their album 3 days ago >_

having been initially sceptical, i was a little bit surprised to find myself absolutely loving it. the very idea of Art Brut - their terrible name and utterly contrived sound especially - should be enough to chill me to the bones, but they've got tunes to spare and it's all coated in a generous layer of fun, which is quite nice for a change. the only song i don't really really like is 'Fight', which is dreadful.

nine years pass...

This album is about to be 10 years old. They burned so bright before flaming out so quickly. Eddie gave all he could give, I guess.

I wonder how they'd be regarded now if they'd called it a day after the first album.

Even though I've listened to every album since at least one time, I still basically regard them as a band with one album.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 17:39 (eleven years ago)

but what an album ..

I'm kinda embarrassed to say that until you restarted this thread I forgot this band even existed

i saw them in 2005 (as mentioned elsewhere), and they were brilliant fun.

very unexpected laughs during a miserable glastonbury experience.

and then getting drunk with eddie with various others afterwards (r.i.p playlouder) ..

the man is good company.

I saw them once in 2006, between the first album and the second, and they were absolutely blisteringly fun. The girl I was dating at the time didn't think as highly of them.

eleven years pass...

Speak of the devil, I put this on the other day (and mentioned it in a post) then wondered what was going on with the band - turns out they’re touring the U.S. for the first time in 15 years and they’re in NYC TODAY (and the next two days)!

Seeing them next week and I'm very excited about it.

"I'm accidentally being political...whilst applying for an American visa. This is a mistake! Scratch all of that...Art Brut are definitely not international revolutionary communists...I promise!"
