No The Quads, as yet then?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 23 May 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

the list results so far make me wonder what kind of punk-less dimension most ILMers dwell in.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 23 May 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Ah, they'll all be there. Soon.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 23 May 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see more soul and soft rock and just more top 40 pop stuff.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

It's like punk never happened - did Sid die in vein (sick)?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't care about the missing punk. The 70s were MOR interesting than just punk.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully no prog has been spotted yet

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I wish there were some Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez. Listening to some of his songs this morning and he was good.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Can twice? Can twice? I am hating this list.

RS, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping for a second half surge on bubblegum and glam.

I like almost all the songs but I kind of wish there were 70 to go not 50.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

RS, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

The middle portion of the chart is so good that it kinda makes me wonder about the top choices to come.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't alive in the 70s and I don't have a broad knowledge of 70s music (and I didn't vote in this poll), but here are some guesses for the remaining spots:

ABBA - Dancing Queen
ABBA - S.O.S.
Alice Cooper - School's Out
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper
Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone...)?
Chic - Le Freak
Chic - Good Times
David Bowie - Heroes
David Bowie - Jean Genie
Derek & The Dominos - Layla
Donna Summer - I Feel Love
Fleetwood Mac - Don't Stop
Gang of Four - Damaged Goods
Joy Division - Transmission
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Lynryd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
M - Pop Muzik
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough
Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
Pere Ubu - Final Solution
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Television - Marquee Moon 12"

I will let more knowledgeable people guess the rest..

a banana (alanbanana), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I'll cry if "Don't Stop" is higher than "Dreams."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that'd be seriously fucked up.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

all right, 36 left. I sez (not ordered):

5 Stairsteps - O-o-h Child
ABBA - Dancing Queen
ABBA - S.O.S.
Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
Big Star - September Gurls
Blondie - Atomic
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone...)?
Cars - Just What I Needed
Cheap Trick- I Want You To Want Me
Chic - Good Times
Chic - Le Freak
Clash - (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
Clash - London Calling
David Bowie - Heroes
Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again
Donna Summer - I Feel Love
Gang of Four - Damaged Goods
Iggy And The Stooges - Search & Destroy
Jackson Five - ABC
Joy Division - Transmission
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough
Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Roxy Music - Virginia Plain
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
Sly & The Family Stone - Family Affair
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Television - Marquee Moon 12"
Temptations - Just My Imagination
Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane

I guess one or two of these might've been on already.

Really, there are a ton I thought would make it that I had to cut to make it down to 36. This should be interesting.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll love you all so much if "Don't Fear the Reaper" does make it.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again

I don't know what this is => it is not going to be in the top 36.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I'll cry if "Don't Stop" is higher than "Dreams."

With "Rumours" finishing outside the top 50 on the albums list, I doubt that there's any more FM to come.

I'd be shocked if "Video Killed the Radio Star" doesn't make it. And if "Kiss Me Again" makes it, then I'll eat my computer.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

(I mean, it's a great song, but it won't make the list)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Willie Colon, people, Willie Colon.

rs, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

(Among others.)

Is "Superstition" going to make it at least?

rs, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I thought "Kiss Me Again" had the same kinda ILM left field-disco cred as "There But for the Grace of God Go I". I guess at this point it's sorta unlikely. But I really don't think "Video Killed the Radio Star" is gonna make it either.

"Superstition" seems like a near-lock, yeah.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

what's the ILM party line on Cheap Trick, anyway? I did a poll on another board where both "Surrender" and "I Want You to Want Me" charted top 100 all-time--are neither gonna appear here at all?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I would think "Surrender" is more popular than "I Want You to Want Me" (based on past threads). I voted for the first but not the second (as far ass I recall).

rs, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

hm, not looking good for the 5 Stairsteps either. Oh well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I Want You To Want Me was number 98

Amiii Stewart (Amiii Stewart), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd be surprised if Surrender is not on the list. And

I'm surprised at the low showing of Patti Smith's Gloria and Born To Run. I don't know if either would have even charted if I didn't have both on my top 5.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I love you all so much!

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I was surprised when I voted for "Born to Run." Somehow I've gotten to really like that song over the years, in a distant but appreciative sort of way.

RS, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Looks like "Surrender" won't make it. :( I voted for it pretty high too. And yeah, "Kiss Me Again" isn't gonna show up. I was hoping it could squeak in at #99 or something (it was one of my nominations, as was "There But for the Grace of God Go I") but the top 20 is strictly hitsville, no time for revisionism.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, unfortunately agreed.

I'm having trouble putting together a logical 20 here. Looks like there might be a couple wildcards.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I placed the Quads single high on my voting list, not out of teh funny, because both sides are great.

The fact that it's not on the rundown so far means, I guess, that I was the only voter for it.

Ah well..

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 May 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

what are the chances of "mother of pearl" breaking top 20?
that would've been my #1.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Thursday, 26 May 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

I think there's a real chance of that. There hasn't been much Roxy Music on the list so far, and there has to be some. I voted for "Mother of Pearl" but I'm not sure how high I put it. But Roxy Music might have suffered from vote splitting.

I had never even heard of the Other Ones either! There are some British type things that I'm learning about through this.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 26 May 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

There is no way any Roxy Music track is placing higher than 'Virginia Plain'.

No one has heard of the Other Ones.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

I have heard of the Other Ones!

And I still haven't given up hope on "Surrender" yet.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

It's the Only Ones.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Only Others.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Hey...this hasn't been posted yet, has it? I certainly can't find it.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Friday, 27 May 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

It was just a prank.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 27 May 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

The overabundance of Blondie is the thing that bugs me most about this list.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 28 May 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm with RS on the Blondie thing, but I kinda saw it coming when ParallelLines was so high on the album poll.

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 28 May 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

If "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" doesn't show up, I'm going to be disappointed. Is this me being crazy again to think it has a shot? There is much Steely Dan love around here, and I had it ranked in my top five picks, I think (maybe #1).

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

(peepee I have no idea if you are a SD hater or lover or indifferenter.)

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Three left. Dancing Queen and I Feel Love for sure, right? I'd be surprised if Roadrunner didn't make it, but this seems really high. That'd mean no Stairway, no Bohemian Rhapsody, Rikki, etc.

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't have predicted that only one of Stairway and Bohemian Rhapsody would make it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 28 May 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm absolutely certain "Roadrunner" will make it.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 28 May 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

SD liker

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 28 May 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

"Dreaming" at #9 is absolutely ridiculous, good list otherwise.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 28 May 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I was gone when nominations and polling were up or otherwise I would've voted for the Temptation's Just My Imagination, which I'm not sure was even nominated. I forget it's from 1971 and not the late-60's.

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 29 May 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

"Dreaming" is great. I voted for it, though I voted for "Heart of Glass" higher. I didn't vote for Parallel Lines though.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 29 May 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

"Transmission" was the only entry in the top 10 that I had to do a double take to. (I'd have been totally cool with "She's Lost Control" doing that well however, or was that 1980? I know "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which totally deserves a top 5 placement in an '80s poll if we do one - and we undoubtedly will - was 1980)

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 29 May 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Was "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by The Slits nominated?

I'd be quite keen on running an 80s poll, I like doing polls. But not for a while, eh?

(Besides I've got one to run on ILC for now)

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 29 May 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's been suggested that we wait until Sept-Oct to do another poll. When autumn comes, bring on the 80's.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 May 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

"Dreaming" is good, maybe even great, but it's not one of their best by a longshot. #9 of the decade? Nuh-uh.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 29 May 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad "September" made it.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Monday, 30 May 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm a huge fan, but I admit that three Blondie tracks in the top 20 is a bit excessive.

However, I do think it's one of their best songs, and one of the best songs to come out of the New York punk scene (this implies that Blondie were one of the top two or three bands to come out of that scene. With three Blondie tracks in the top 20 and "Parallel Lines" in the top ten of the albums poll, I know that many ILM'ers agree with these statements).

Now here is my question: what is the best disco song ever? According to the 70's poll, it's "Heart of Glass" by a huge margin. I love that song, and it would probably figure in my all-time Disco POX, but the best ever, with nothing else even approaching it? That doesn't seem right.

So, if I asked you to predict the rankings of two songs on a 70's poll:

Song A: the 7th or 8th best disco song of the decade
Song B: the 2nd or 3rd best power-pop song of the decade, performed by a legendary New York band

Then you'd probably bank on Song B making the top 15, if not the top 10, and Song A slotting in around ... what, #50? #60?

Maybe I'm phrasing these questions in a misleading way, but I think "Dreaming" does rock better than "HoG" does disco.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 May 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

according to the 70s poll "i feel love" is the best disco song ever!

According to the 70's poll, it's "Heart of Glass" by a huge margin.

OK, I'm a fucking moran, because disco went #1 - #2, with Chic and Michael in the top ten.

Nonetheless, when I think of my disco POX, "Heart of Glass" isn't in the top five. It probably makes the top ten, though. Each of the top ten songs in a "best of decade" list should be one of the best two or three tracks in its genre, and somehow "Heart of Glass" doesn't fit that bill (for me).

yeah i like "heart of glass" ALOT but i'm not even sure it's in my top 100 disco songs. it's still a great song, and they're a great band. demographics a big key obviously - they got friends in the punk, pop, disco, hip-hop, american band that was huge in the uk.

i liked the tracks poll more than the album poll (so few 70s tracks seem to be canon fodder and few of those seemed to have a good chance of doing well in this poll); i'm a little disappointed certain ROCK tracks didn't make it ("school's out", "immigrant song"), i was kinda meh on the clash placings, but really no complaints.

"Immigrant Song" did make it! I know cos I downloaded it and now feel a bit of a chump for my kneejerk anti-Zep stance lo these 30 years gone by.

What, I thought it was a perfectly okay dig.
