I'm now listening to the Kruder and Dorfmeister one and am quite impressed. What's the skinny on the rest?

Their new track for the album is another revenge-of-lounge infused piece that I've been hearing in some dancehall lately, tho of course this is not dancehall. There's a laid-back jump-up groove with nothing in common with hip-hop, synth washes, and a handy asymetricality to the crossfader work. It feels like a slow rhumba, or an extended trance break.

If it's who I'm thinking of, I have one of the DJ Kicks CDs that I got in a Record and Tape Exchange (don't know why that should seem significant just this second), but not sure I'm qualified to weigh in on the debate just yet.

It has been said by others that the Nightmares on Wax DJ Kicks is really really good relative to other stuff they do, but I haven't heard it. The DJ Loco one is the only one I've heard and it's actually pretty good for someone who threw lots of naked models on the cover of his first album.

Ah my favourite mix-series! Let's see. Kemistry & Storm is a great hard jungle mix. Stereo MC's is a nice one that goes through a lot of styles. Trüby Trio is too polished though pleasurable. Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks is probably my favourite techno/house mix-cd. Claude Young is a bit too spartan. I have heard the Thievery Corporation one a couple of times and that's a nice summer-mix.

Yeah much better. Although i like the way Claude does that cross- fader stutter. Easiest trick in the DJ-book but it never fails to make me happy.

The Smith and Mighty one is good. A good mix of dub, hip-hop and drum n' bass. The Thievery Corp. gets boring after a while, I think.

I can second the Kemistry + Storm recommendation, that one is great. Andrea Parker's DJ Kicks isn't bad either, I prefer that to her solo album "Kiss My Arp" which just isn't that worthwhile.

there is a rockers hi-fi dj kicks that is both hilariously dated and quite entertaining. it's a mixture of dub, drum'n'bass and some other genre that doesn't exist any more. the hilarious 'come on my selector' calls crack me up any time.

K&D and Nightmares on Wax have stood out for me. They unearth more badass rare shit and make it all flow. I am more interested in hearing what almost any of the DJ Kicks artists has to offer than those in the "Back to Mine" series - Groove Armada, Everything But the Girl, Morcheeba.

I've listened to most of them and like them all. A good one not mentioned above is by Nicolette. It's a double CD with everything -- drum'n'bass, house, some classic techno, and production help by Plaid!

I got the Victor Duplaix one the other day. Boy is that an awful mix cd. Possibly the worst I've ever heard. Soul-less, needlessly fiddly beats, those grim 'spacy' lyrics that Naked music and wanky brit deep house artists seem to favour, and the most irritating vocodered fake radio announcements speckled throughout the cd. Couldn't be bothered to listen through to the end even after I started skipping through and only listening to the first 30" of each track...

Alba don't buy that, it looks decidedly mediocre. Cozen you're wrong about "hot in Herre". Dan is right about the playgroup - it rocks. I Love the Almost-identical-to-the-original but somehow 100 times better cover of "Behind the Wheel". That Ralphi Rosario track was new to me too and is pretty great.

the kick on tiga's "hot in herre" is loud as hell. it's got those great tweaked cowbell noises that are all over the dfa's remix of "she wants to move". in fact, it's got pretty much the same sort of snap! and pop as the "she wants to move" remix. so what's the problem? yes the rap sucks but so do the vocals on moroder tracks. all y'all who can get down with that track but not tiga are feelin the indie guilt, i think.

there are some comments upthread that are totally bizarro universe to me. i'll just weigh in on a couple of these.

smith & mighty - is totally magical. beautiful dubby trip hop intro which suddenly shifts into a "best-of" of underrated bristol jungle. you probably need it just for more rockers "show love" which has the greatest diva break ever, the filtering making her voice sound like a rocketship straining to drag the whole track into space. and also krust's remix of "bass speaker", under rakim's "kick a hole in the speaker" sample he throws down these frenzied bass farts that sound like he's trying to strangle the woofer from the inside.

8-X DEATH IN VEGAS 8-X

so this thing starts out with chopped and screwed italo, then moves into something that sounds like a cheesy "trans europe express" rip at first but suddenly breaks down into a tuff abstract techno break thats as chopped and phased as a prime urban tribe track. then there's a third section with super tight electro zaps over what sounds like a klaus schulze track. anyway the third track is the one that takes my head off into future shock territory. the washed-out and slowed down choir that starts the thing is at like the exact midpoint between chillwave, witch house and old rising high chillout tracks, but then there's these echoey balearic freak folk guitar / middle eastern string stabs that fleck the whole thing, and then throbbing gabber-like bass under the whole thing. basically this mix couldn't get more "secret history of goth crunk" if it tried.

The Detroit mixes were pretty good. Still listen to the Stacey Pullen sometimes although I prefer his BBC Essential Mix from around the same time (which included a few of the same tracks). Such a great DJ in his day - the recent mixes of his I've heard have been uber-generic tech-house...yawn.

The Claude Young is decent too but harder.

Erlend Oye one is the all time classic for me. Sure the mixing is pretty awful (but not as bad as Annie's one. jesus christ!) but the tunes...it's the record that got me into microhouse ergo probably the most important record of my teen years. Timeless stuff really.

Apparat one is nice enough, not listened to it much. Hoped that playing it on a longish car journey through the Fens with my dad would get me into it properly...just made me a bit bored tbh.
