i am currently penning an essay/article on magazine's recorde corpus and i needed some info on mssr. trafford that the interweb is not providing me. namely:

1. does he still work as a photo-archivist in london town?

2. has he released any music since the last luxuria album?

3. were there any (and i mean any at all, one offs etc.) embarassing/non-embarassing live "reunions" of magazine, with shelley, etc.?

4. anything else you deem pertinent.

the essay is actually written already, but i need to know this so i don't contradict the facts as they are.

jess, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The ShelleyDevoto record is coming out next month. I must admit I'm very excited.

Andy K, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ack! my whole "take" is now thrown!

jess, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

trafford = trotter = i'm getting conflicting information from these damn "expert" interweb sources! (luckily i don't actually get so pretentious as to use his real surname in the essay, huzzah.)

jess, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This place should be helpful, unless you've been there already.

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jess, you shd begin as many sentences with 'and then' as possible. Just a tip. (It will also obv boost yr word ct, if you need to stretch thgs a bit.)

Andy K, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: Recent work

I'm sure you already know about his co-writing credits on one or two Mansun B-sides (seem to remember that 'Railings' (?) was quite good).

Apart from that, didn't he team up with Noko again on two tracks form the first Apollo 400 album c.1994?

Zanny G, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He still works at the photo agency/archive whatevah, i think — my fwend L (who in fact knows him from manc of old) sees him sometimes in the supermarket. She says, "He looks like a v.old man [comedy pause] but then so do I."

I met him via [xXx], oddly enuff, and smoked my first evah weed sitting next to him on New Year's Day 1997. After [xXx]'s and my friendship er splintered I once encountered him as I got off the bus at Angel, and was sure he was GLARING at me = the Evil One, in [xXx]'s estimation. But I was in a state, and prolly semi-mentalist.

I love the name of the reunion project - Buzzkunst (sorry to rub it in, jess)

Jeff W, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some Buzzkunst discussion here, link posted to save you from me and Jonesy going on and on again about how brain-twistingly good they were that evening.

Tim, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jesus, i was -on- that read.

anyway, i already altered the essay with minor problems. (one sentence, actually.) so no worries.

and what a horrible name.

jess, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a promo of Buzzkunst. Some nice moments, but I'm not totally sold; there's a lot of what sounds like half-hearted song ideas heavy- handedly overlaid with sampled/programmed beats, but with no real attempt at integrating said percussion. Pete and Howard trying to be down with the kids I guess. There is a great little Magazine-esque track on it though, called 'Til the Stars In His Eyes Are Dead' which I played two or three times.

misterjones, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

**I've got a promo of Buzzkunst**

I want it - NOW!

Dr. C, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

make me an offer Dave. Joking apart, you can have it. Mail me your details and I'll send it to you. Tell you what, I'll swap it for something. doesn't have to be a CD, can be a book or, I dunno, something you don't want I guess.

misterjones, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll e-mail you. Cheers!

Dr. C, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How the hell did I miss this forthcoming release! and I was on the Cookin Vinyl website recently to find out about the new AC Acoustics album.

DJ Martian, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So DJM, you're fallible after all!

Dr. C, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do my best, the album is released 25-Feb-2002.

DJ Martian, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So who is who on the cover? I'm guessing Devoto's the one with the... things coming out of him.

Andy, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So who is who on the cover? I recognize them, there from Mars !

It looks like something that Reg Smithies from The Chameleons would come up with.

DJ Martian, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that devoto/draper thing sounded EXACTLY LIKE IRON MAIDEN.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to meet Devoto just so I can scream "MANSUN? MANSUN? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY?" in his bespectacled face.

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IMO Mansun's "Six" in one of the most MENTALIST rekkids ever made. I think it's great. Just about everything else I've ever heard by them is terrible. I thought "Railings" was very good.

Norman Phay, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Norman - you are spot on here. "Six" is a magnificent, one-off - punk/prog madness and some moments of genuine beauty. I pretty much hated everything else they did too.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just for "Permafrost" I think he'd have to be a classic. So much bile in that song.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, he's so obviously a classic for me it was almost hard to write the essay without it turning into drooling fanboy-ism. it's as if he took all the bile and tension and anger which took the place of my blood when my heart stopped working and turned it into an lifeswork.

three years pass...
Was Jerky Versions of the Dream ever released on cd?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine lived next door to him in Stoke Newington until recently. My girlfriend and I occasionally sat in the garden subtly dropping Buzzcocks lyrics into our conversation very loudly like cunts.

Huey (Huey), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Alex, I'm pretty sure I saw it on E-bay for a ridiculous price on CD once, so I think it probably was but is long out of print.

I only stumbled across that Devoto essay for the first time recently, it's very good.

M Philip O'Nyman (Ferg), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

No Thyself is a new (!) Magazine album that's out now - uk tour next month, too

StanM, Sunday, 9 October 2011 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

On first listen it's just alright. Certainly has that trademark Magazine sound but it didn't grab me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 9 October 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

The Dave Formula "Satellite Sweetheart" is good!
