Back to Mine S&D

ILM's a place where comps get respect. Back to Mine, for those who don't know, is a series of comps where particular DJs or groups choose their favorite songs for putting on the stereo AFTER the show is over. The only one I've ever heard is the Danny Tenaglia one and it's superb. "Bang Bang You're Mine" by Bang the Party, "Beau Mot Plage" by Isolee, "To the Sea" by Yello, "Keep on Walkin" by CeCe Peniston, some serious soul and gospel like Roy Ayers, and a crazy "gospella mix" of "Rhythm of Life" as sung by Oleta Adams. You always kind of suspected that this is what Danny loves, but you never quite got to hear it because of the genre he works in. What are the other good ones?

"Beau Mot Plage" by Isolee

gor, blimey, etc. that one's turning into the micro-house "strings of life", no?

Heard a few... best bit of one is Groove Armada's ending with Tears For Fears 'Pharaohs' classic! It has to be noted that Gil Scott Heron really didn't appear to know who/where the hell he was during his show, rather disturbing viewing..

I saw the Faithless one today coincidentally. it looked shite, cept for Tindersticks

I think so too, jess. But it's about 5000 times better.

subthred: Have any Back to Mines made you look at an artist a little differently?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Back to Mine. One of my favorite compilation concepts! In my opinion, search: all of them. They all work for me....but the Tenaglia one you mention exists a bit outside the normal BTM sound. They are not all like that. Though all of them are definite exercises in eclecticism.

Dave Seaman's is the most well-mixed of the bunch, I feel. It's got a continuous, cinematic soundtrack-ish feel to it. Nick Warren's is good too, though aspects of the track selection tend to be a bit obvious (Moby - Go, Coldcut - Autumn Leaves). Of course to be fair this is not a new compilation by any stretch.

Groove Armada's is a lot of fun.....to me it feels like a very sunny "beach" album. I've taken it to the beach and played it there and confirms my suspicions. Beach-towel disco.

Faithless edition is one of the more eclectic. This is actually one of my favorites. Since everyone seems to hate Dido, though, I will give the Dido-alert, she is on this comp, being Rollo's sister. If you can't stand her you can simply skip the opening track.

EBTG's is great - I find this one to be the most groove-oriented of the BTMs. Morcheeba's is the heaviest on the hip-hop, also some soul, funk. Haven't heard Talvin Singh's yet.

Since I've only heard the Tenaglia one, patrick, I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by 'normal BTM sound'. Are the other ones like beatmixed or something?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant that the others are part of that broad genre that people like to call "downtempo." The Tenaglia one just sounds different from the others due to his choice of tunes.....you won't get anything too near that on any of the others. I think I meant that his is more an exception in the BTM series than the rule.

Aha, thank you.

nineteen years pass...

Found that these comps are on Spotify after stumbling onto the, uh, Fatboy Slim one. Nice to re-discover the Pet Shop Boys and Everything But The Girl ones, going to revisit more.

The Tricky one is a good example of the diversity in these mixes—The Cure>Eric B>Dr. John>Morphine—though I do think of the vibe of these now as Chipotle Music.

Chipotle Music

Must ILM ruin all that I hold good? Actually I'd be pretty stoked to hear Eric B in Chipotle, I heard him in the local falafel shop the other day and it made an excellent meal that much better. Otherwise I'd imagine you nailed it.

The Underworld issue was a personal favorite of mine when it came out, I haven't revisited it much since then. The Orb's is outstanding although it does lean heavily on the expected likes of Thomas Fehlmann and AFX. Seems like MJ Cole's is also worth a listen if you're desperate enough to resort to Norman Cook's, heh.

I mean it affectionately! (And it’s an instrumental “Paid in Full” and definitely The Cure’s “Lullaby” that I’ve heard at Chipotle.) And just as a sign that these comps influenced what has become everyday background music.

Huge huge fan of Neil Tennant / Chris Lowe one. Each gets a CD, and you get that English romanticism + Italo disco = Pet Shop Boys equation perfectly laid out.

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Tuesday, 26 October 2021 19:16 (four years ago)

The groove armada one has a nice journey through disco, deep house and chill out. Good selection of tracks

Swanswans, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 19:36 (four years ago)

What nikola said about the Pet Shop Boys one. Probably my favourite. Looking at things I have written I seemed to like the Richard X and Royksopp ones, too.

djh, Tuesday, 26 October 2021 19:52 (four years ago)

i only have a couple - the richard x and talvin singh editions.
very different to each other, but both of them are really good.

Very happy to see this revived!

Surprised these are on Spotify as I’d have assumed the rights would be a nightmare.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 31 October 2021 17:44 (four years ago)

I have only heard one, the Orbital BTM, which for Earth Leakage Trip alone is worth it.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Monday, 1 November 2021 13:15 (four years ago)

Are these actually mixed on Spotify, or just playlists of the unmixed tracks?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 08:20 (four years ago)

Both - there's usually an unmixed version and then a "DJ Mix" version

groovypanda, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 09:42 (four years ago)

i can't find them - maybe it's a US/UK thing?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 10:49 (four years ago)

I can only find the playlists people have made, not the actual albums. PSBs one is predictably great.

Position Position, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 19:23 (four years ago)

I can just see three recent ones:Jungle, Nightmares on Wax and Fatboy Slim
