Any spring to mind? I've just spent this day d/l-ing tonnes of them to listen to. It saves me having to track down deleted 12"s etc. So far I've gotten:
  • Criminal Minds: "Baptized By Dub"
  • Mix Factory: "Take Me Away"
  • MC Lethal & Rave Digger: "Gotta Believe"
  • G Double E: "Fire When Ready"
  • Urban Hype: "A Trip To Trumpton"
  • Sound Corp: "Dream Finder"
I can't seem to find "Bad Boy" by Grand National or "Gravity" by Gravity.

Any others I've missed?

Kodanshi, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duh. I've also gotten
  • Citizen Kaned: "Set Me Free"

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahahaha! I remember so many of those! That looks so cool. Yeah, i'd forgotten about Altern8 and 80 AUM. As for Run Tings... I've got "Tribe Vibes", but not that one you mentioned.

Kodanshi, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Waking Up' by Nicolette (produced by Shut Up And Dance), plus several others by her whose titles I can't remember...

David Inglesfield, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any rave classics list will remain sadly incomplete without the inclusion of "Mr Kirk's Nightmare."

Ben Williams, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted stuff I would feel hard-pressed to find in shops, online ordering facilities,e tc. I already have 4 Hero's Kirk track as well as its 12" mix.

Kodanshi, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A homeboy, a hippie a funky dread - Total Confusion.

Absolutely cutting edge, intense and powerful.

DJ Martian, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Genocide II-"Sirens of acre lane"
Trotsky and Mercy-"Forgotten souls"
4 Hero-"Cookin' up yah brain"
2 bad mice-"Bombscare" "Hold it down"
Lennie De Ice-"We are I.E."
Acen-"Trip to the moon"
Nino-"The gun"
Nebula II-"Seance"
The Trotsky and Mercy track is seriously good.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of great suggestions above. May I add a few?

The Hypnotist, "This House Is Mine"
Jonny L, "Hurt You So"
Opus III, "It's A Fine Day"
4 Hero, "Journey Into The Light"
Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era, "Far Out"

Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era, "Far Out" - nice one!

Thanks for all your helpful contributions. For these kind acts I'll treat you all by NOT posting that bathtub shitter picture again. =;-D>

Ian Van Dahl: "Castles in the Sky"

Now that's just being silly isn't it?

The Daddy, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't seem to find "Bad Boy" by Grand National

this may be because its not called that. the title of the track is Grand National and the artist is is Rhythm For Reasons. but the original is not the famous track, it is the Tango remix that came out a short while later which is the one you want

gareth, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot Good Life - "Inner City" Liquid - "Sweet Harmony"

And a not so famous one Rising High Collective - "Tangled In My Thoughts"

Plus a Bajillion others that I can't remember

The Daddy, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

of course, this thread is pretty much tailor made for me. for the moment i will just refer you to the tape i made for Sarah C:

the house crew ~ euphoria (nino's dream)
krome & time ~ sound is for the underground
awesome 3 ~ don't go
psychotropic ~ hypnosis (sl2 remix)
criminal minds ~ baptized by dub
urban shakedown ~ some justice (concrete jungle mix)
shades of rhythm ~ sound of eden
sonz of a loop da loop era ~ peace & loveism

acen ~ trip ii the moon pt 2 - the darkside
manix ~ alright wid me (tek 9 remix)
jonny l ~ hurt you so
nookie ~ give a little love
bass selective ~ blow out pt 2
manix ~ i can't stand it
nrg ~ the real hardcore (i need your lovin')
powerpill ~ pac-man (choci's hi-score mix)
manix ~ try to love me

i would also have liked to have put on Neuromancer's Pennywise (either original or Clown remix) and Dance Conspiracys Dub War, but sadly i own neither of them

gareth, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem...'Mentasm'? And everything by N-Joi. Oh and 'Fear Is The Mindkiller' by Eon.

Omar, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do any of you have that "Old Skool Euphoria" mixed by Altern-8?

It's like 10 pounds or something in my nearest HMV. so tempting.

actually 10 euros maybe, even better.

Ronan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a much better one than that, that has also just come out, don't know what its called though. anyone?

gareth, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

luckily dan mentioned "anasthasia" while i slept, or i would had to have come in and cracked some skulls. ah for the days when i tooled around town in my 87 hyundai frightening friends and neighbors alike with the sounds of the hoover.

jess, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

frightening friends and neighbours alike with the sound of the hoover

we yung kidz do the same with the azzido da bass dooms night timo maas remix.

Ronan, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth you spindlefuckin' star! For years I've spent my time thinking of it as my version's title. When I used to request it on now-defunct local radio stations like Unique FM and Curfew FM I'd say: "Bad Boy by Grand National!" To this DJs would reply: "OK mate!" and play it.

Cheers for clearing that up for me!

Krome & Time kicks mucho arse. What did they call "This Sound Is For The Underground"'s flipside? It sampled drums from Rebel MC and featured vocals intoning: "She keeps on running away..."

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no probs Kodanski, but you already asked the Krome & Time question! the flipside is Manic Stampede

gareth, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You need more Krome and Time:

Krome and Time - "The Slammer"
CJ Bolland - "Horsepower"
Top Buzz - "Living in darkness"

More controversially:

Hixxy and Sharkey - "Toytown"
DJ Brisk - "Airhead"
Wedlock - "I'm the fuck you man"
Scott Brown and Rab S - "Now is the time"

jacob, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no-one's said 'hardcore uproar' yet.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Help me find this track, I've got it on a mix tape but don't know eho it's by:

Early 90s i reckon - it has vocals that go 'take it easy, take it easy..' over a hardcore-ish / breakbeat rhythm

Robin, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

808 State - Cubik Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives High Lonesome Sound System - Champion Sound Digital Boy - Gimme A Fat Beat Channel X - Rave the Rhythm Rio Rhythm Band - Carnival de Casa Voodoo Child - Voodoo Child (Moby's only good track, ever) Jump - Funkatarium Brothers in Rhythm - Such A Good Feeling Brothers Love Dubs - The Mighty Ming Twin Hype - Do It To The Crowd Eon - Spice

and of course,

2 Unlimited - Get Ready For This

Spencer, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh. Hardcore Uproar = one of Moby's many multiple personalities. Plus it samples Star Wars.

I know I asked that K&T question, but I couldn't recall its answer!

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If we're going for 2 Unlimited, let's get "Twilight Zone" or "Tribal Dance" in there instead. Hey, did I mention "Feed The World" by Fantasy UFO or "Accelerate" by Skin Up?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missed the rave boat by a long mark and am therefore curious:

(1) How many of you were off your heads on E dancing to these tunes at raves/clubs in the late 80's/early 90's/whenever and how many of you have since assimilated those now sanctified tracks into your sonic vocabulary via Reynolds or whoever? In parenthesis, when I listen to "Energy Flash" straight it sounds a bit DULL to my ears, however, when I take an E the theme tune to Rainbow sounds ineffably cosmic.

(2) Do you still like them when you're NOT off your head and dancing in a rave/club?

(3) If you ARE still out there dancing and getting out of your heads, can you recomend me some wicked DJs/Artists/whatever? Please?! Where and who is the cutting edge you funky people!

Educate me.

Justin Case, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

robin, that may be Take It Easy, by Cedric Winkleburger

gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never used to go clubbing when all these tracks came out. I went to school. I used to sit at home blasting them from my radio. So I stillove them. They just sound so energetic...and FOINE.

I recall when someone released a rave version of that Rainbow theme tune! Part of that "Kiddie Techno" era featuring versions of Trumpton, Rainbow, Sesame Street, Aphex Twin's Pac-Man tune, etc. etc.

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(1) I've always disliked clubs and drugs. I was just into a lot of dance music at the time for listening purposes. I used to listen to the pirate stations - Kiss (which was great in those days), Lightning and others I can't remember.

(2) I like them for the same reasons, and also because nostalgia is creeping in with regard to that era.

(3) I don't know because I have even less interest in clubs and drugs than I had then. And I no longer listen to new stuff so obsessively.

David Inglesfield, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ironically, I have to apologize to everyone for the lack of breaks in my list.

But as for singling out "Get Ready for This" as 2 Unlimited's finest work, well, a million cheerleaders can't be wrong.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES THEY CAN. I said so.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cheers gareth

Robin, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
repost w/line breaks!

808 State - Cubik
Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives
High Lonesome Sound System - Champion Sound
Digital Boy - Gimme A Fat Beat
Channel X - Rave the Rhythm
Rio Rhythm Band - Carnival de Casa
Voodoo Child - Voodoo Child (Moby's only good track, ever)
Jump - Funkatarium
Brothers in Rhythm - Such A Good Feeling
Brothers Love Dubs - The Mighty Ming
Twin Hype - Do It To The Crowd
Eon - Spice

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 12 October 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah this thread has been a major inspiration today, some really strong tracks. do wish Kodanshi would resurface.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 12 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

also

Bizarre Inc. - Raise Me (Ascension Mix)

I think it's mixed by Eon and it's the first track on their Energique album.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i preferred i'm gonna get you

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 12 October 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

For some reason, I don't think of "I'm Gonna Get You" as a rave track. It's really (U.S) Garage-y as if Ce Ce Peniston did it or something. It's obv one of the best tracks ever!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 12 October 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

yea i know what you mean, you're right, i don't either, it does have a US sound, despite the break. i doubt this was ever played at rave clubs (i never heard it out anyway)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 12 October 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Unsurprisingly, it was Bizarre Inc's big hit in the US. Cracked the top 10 in 1993 IIRC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

rave classics to me means pure hardcore/breakbeat/proto-jungle/acid house stuff

no-one mentioned one track by Nookie, esp. 'Give A Little Love (Manix remix)' or 'Its Gonna Be Alright' or the legendary 'Nicholas Parsons'

also

Doc Scott 'NHS'
Metalheads 'Terminator'
Danse City 'Melba'
? 'Patti Doesnt Have A Mink Coat'
UHF 'UHF' (produced by Moby)
Fantasy UFO 'Fantasy'
Meat Beat Manifesto 'Radio Babylon'
Shut Up & Dance - EVERYTHING
Blame 'Music Takes You' - various mixes

also, 'Hardcore Uproar' was NOT by Moby but by two guys under the name Together...sadly i think they're both now dead which is a shame

blueski, Monday, 14 October 2002 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, i see gareth DID mention 'give a little love' earlier on

blueski, Monday, 14 October 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(And I mentioned the various mixes of "Music Takes You" and "The Green Man" by Shut Up And Dance...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 October 2002 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

-rave classics to me means pure hardcore/breakbeat/proto-jungle/acid house stuff

actually that reminds me that the cut I heard more than anything else during my raving days ('89-'92) was:

Phuture - "Acid Trax"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 October 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i've made an mp3 (about 3mbs) clip from a random rave tape i downloaded from audiogalaxy... i think it's bloody terrific...

can anybody here identify any of the tracks?

minna (minna), Monday, 14 October 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The first track, "Cubes", is great!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What a weird comp.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Weirdly enough that Fadela track was apparently released in UK by Factory?!!?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, I had to fly out of Berlin last winter the day before this event at the Tresor:
http://tendance.de/news/01275.shtml
Sorry, I couldn't find anything about it in English. Still, check out the lineup, you'll get the idea.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anything known about Lennie de Ice?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realize he was much of an enigma.

"Lenny Dee is a native of New York. He started his career in 1984 DJing in a local roller disco in Brooklyn NYC at the age of 17. Lenny Dee is recognized as one of New York's earliest Techno pioneers. His earlier music consisted of Disco, Electro-Body, High Energy and early House. In 1989, Lenny's musical exploits brought him to Europe, which changed his direction once again. Lenny Dee's DJing career propelled him to be one of the most sort after International Techno DJs in the world. In a Time where DJs remained local for the most part, he became the number one International DJ in Germany, Scotland, France and Switzerland with his new sound - Hardcore Techno - a sound that he is still known for today. Lenny launched Industrial Strength Records in the U.S.A. in 1991 with PCP's 'Mescalinium United', becoming the first Hardcore Techno label in the world and one of the first Electronic Labels in the U.S.A. On a personal front Lenny's productions have always been diverse from his signature hardcore, to techno, house and beyond."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely we are not speaking of the same person?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Just as Long as I Got You"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

JoB, looking at that tracklist makes me wonder: were you living in the UK in those days? Or was it a deliberate decision to include only (apart from two token Beltrams) UK label tracks - quite a few of those tunes were only local hits (eg Sesame's Treet) and nobody outside the UK played sets like that so it's odd to see a Dutch DJ with such a tracklist. There's nothing from Go Bang!/Midtown/Torso/Who's That Beat?/Lower East Side/Mental Radio/Hype/Rotterdam Records/Music Man/Bounce/ARS/Media Records/Beat Box/STD/USA Import/Trance Mission/Dead Dead Good/Hithouse/Low Spirit/HPF/etc etc etc, the labels that dominated raves worldwide circa 1991.

This looks a bit like doing a "hiphop classics" show on a New York station and only playing westcoast tracks.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sesame's Treet" was definitely not a local hit ... it was played in Toronto quite often, as was SUAD, Altern-8, and most of the rest of JoB's list. Of course, the Toronto rave scene was taking all of its cues from the UK scene in those days.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

We ARE speaking of the same person.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That set looks exactly like stuff I was hearing in California at the time ("Sesame's Treat" included).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well fuck me i never knew dee = de ice. makes sense.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Odd - I heard Sesame's Treet once in a while but it wasn't quite that big a rave hit where I was at the time (all over Europe) - still, why limit yourself to only the London labels and ignore, say, RFTR "Extrasyn", Westbam "Mayday", Fierce Ruling Diva "Rubb It In", D-Shake "Technotrance", Channel X "Groove To Move", LA Style "James Brown Is Dead", DJPC "Inssomniak", Frank De Wulf "The Tape", Digital Boy "Kokko", T99 "Anasthasia", Quadrophonia "Quadrophonia", Antico "We Need Freedom", RAF "We Gonna Get", Sequencial "Cycades", etc etc etc.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

attention: just received an e-mail from XL

..................................................

As part of XL Recordings's 15th anniversary, the label are finally ready to reissue some of their early Hardcore and Rave classics for the first time on 12" vinyl and as digital downloads.

Coming out in batches, the first three are in the shops as of today and they are:

THE PRODIGY What Evil Lurks
XLXV 1501 (originally issued as XLT 17 in 1991)
You read that right! The legendary first single which was deleted shortly after its release and never made available again until now. The 12” reissue also features two other rare songs, ‘We Gonna Rock’ and ‘Android’ as well as the original version of ‘Everybody In The Place’.

LIQUID Sweet Harmony
XLXV 1503 (originally issued as XLT 28 in 1992)
After borrowing some money from a friend to put out the first Liquid record, Eamon Downes hit the top with 'Sweet Harmony', a No. 15 UK chart hit. Despite several other strong records, Liquid are still best remembered for this piano driven rave classic.

JOHN + JULIE Circles (Round And Round)
XLXV 1505 (originally issued as XLT 18 in 1991)
The late Lee Newman and Michael Wells formed Greater Than One in London, circa 1985. The group was created to explore art through performance, recordings and installations. In 1990, they started releasing singles as GTO (because it was easier to spell) and Tricky Disco (to explore more techno and house music). As the rave scene of 1991 exploded, Newman and Wells started releasing singles as John + Julie, Church of Extacy and Signs of Chaos. They would also later release albums and singles as TD5, The Salami Brothers, and Technohead.

Coming very soon to 12", and already available for download are:

JONNY L Ooh! I Like It
XLXV 1502 (originally issued as XLT 44 in 1992)
Jonny L debuted with straightahead rave staples like “Hurt U So’ and ‘Ooh! I Like It’ before returning to his hardcore breakbeat origins with highlights of 1997 in the drum'n'bass arena with the 1997 ‘Piper’ single and ‘Sawtooth’ LP.

SL2 DJ’s Take Control
XLXV 1504 (originally released as XLT 24 in 1991)
The first of three successful singles released on XL by DJ’s Slipmatt and Lime. Originally released on the bands’ Awesome label, this track was later re-issued on XL and reached No. 11 in the UK charts. This wasn’t their only foray as ‘On A Ragga Tip’ scored them an amazing No. 2 position and ‘Way In My Brain’ reached No. 26.

There's more to follow over the next three months from the likes of Junior Vasquez, Tommy Musto, Lenny D, Moby and, of course, more from The Prodigy.

Lennie De Ice (UK guy, I.E. Records) is not Lenny Dee (NY, Industrial Strength).

"Lennie De Ice (UK guy, I.E. Records) is not Lenny Dee (NY, Industrial Strength)."

Okay apparently not (or at least Lenny Dee's bio makes no mention of it.) I've been belaboring under this misapprehension for years haha

Can any oldskool aficianados in ILM help identify the title and artist behind a particular jungle/dnb track?

I've only ever heard it on a pirates tape from about 1994, it's a pretty stripped down "darkside" tune, with two main samples from the film Candyman - one is the "I hear you're looking for the candyman, bitch" quote and the other is a sample of a woman screaming, which is looped over the bassline for most of the track. Have had a good dig around in Discogs etc, but cannot find anything which fits the bill. Any ideas?

i.d. a track from the new TV advertised "Ravin'" compilation.

lyrics are something like:

"Come with me
tonight's the night
can't you see i'm gonna be with you
...
I aint gonna wait no more"

it's one of these tracks

Jed's track sounds like "Activ-8" by Altern8... which is on the list, WHOO I'M GOOD. No idea what Bill A's track is but it sounds excellent!

Bill's track could be this but that sounds like it's probably more Belgian techno than what he describes.

It looks like a lot of the ones on this thread pre-date my own rave experiences. So I'm just going to list a few of my own personal classics:

Jeff Mills - The Bells
The Nighttripper - Tone Exploitation
DJ Funk - XTC
CZR - Deep Into The Vibe
Deee-Lite - D.M.T. (Supa DJ Dmitry & DJ Silver Remix)

Not heard this, but I wouldn't be shocked if this is the right track.

That could well be the number - nice one, Alex. Will have to try and find it after work - Slsk, don't fail me now!

Alex - you were spot on. The audio sample on the item below confirms it, and it still sounds brilliant - now I just have to find a copy!
