Slightly late, but it's up. A very uninspiring week - Enrique Inglesias??

my comp has crashed 4 times now when I try to look at FT. unusual.

The more I hear "Hero", the more hilarious it becomes. It's gotten to the point where I hope it gets played, which is just a bad place to be.

WILL THE FOCUS GROUP COME SOON ?

anthony, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DEFINE SOON.

It's this slice of heaven that came out in 1990 that was described by Brian Eno as 'the vaguest piece of music ever to be in the charts' and...oh.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Hero", to which my wife and make up obscene lyrics on a daily basis, has one thing going for it: where most other cheap, soppy ballads would go for the BIG MODULATION, Enrique justs sings the chorus harder that last time. So that's ten seconds of worth every time the song plays.

However: in the original, non-obscene lyrics, Enrique asks permission to do about 800 completely passive, weak things. This is heroism?

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He offers to kiss away your pain! Depending on the amount of pain you have, this could lead to Enrique's lips becoming cracked and dry.

Is this not heroism?

Nicole, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not if he uses Chapstick.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only thing I've taken away from this thread is that Jennifer Love- Hewitt is a complete slapper for men with chapped lips. For that, I thank you profusely.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What, are you taking that as a sign of inspiration?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

More a sign that the world is slowly aligning itself to match perfectly with my humor.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Too true. Bush's jokes demonstrate how his humor is most isolated.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hero is quite fun to sing along with. I especially enjoy substituting "I will be Enrique, baby" into the chorus.

As I said last night Tom, Alive by P.O.D. is a wonderful record. Not only is it very funny but it facilitates proper headbanging like nothing else released in the last few years. Your assumption that Nu- Metal has certain pre-occupations and therefore cannot branch out into different topics also seems to miss the point a bit too.

That said, everything else you had to review was pretty poor so I'm not surprised you had a negative mindset.

Pete, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's fair to say that the way most nu-metal presents itself is as a genre with specific preoccupations and that nu-metal bands justify their sound because it's aggressive, fucked up, harsh etc (just like life, man). So when POD come along making nu-metal music with smiley positivist lyrics it breaks down this link between the sound and subject of typical nu-metal.

POD is a very funny record I'll grant you but I didn't see last night and don't see now that it's a good one.

Tom, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why has the chapstick => arse-stick jumpcut not been used? repetition = foundation stone of all humour nay art (if there's a diff)

mark s, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, I think it's because no one wants to put Enrique Iglesias and anus-stick together in the same post for fear of screaming nightmares (like the ones I'll be having tonight).

"Alive" by POD makes me want to blaspheme in the worst possible way; that can't be an effective method of getting their message across.
