Honestly, its pretty cliche to say they're sellouts, that they suck now, that Lars is a dick, that James can't sing, that their hard-rock/alt-metal-rock/not-really-metal post-Black Album era, ruined their legacy, and it wouldn't be such a cliche if it wasn't true. Still, IMHO, Master of Puppets is one of the greatest metal albums ever conceived, and Ride the Lightning is right up their with it.
On a positive note, they influenced the sound of metal for countless bands, and on a negative note, they influenced the sound of metal for countless bands.
I'd tend to think that for most people, time will tend to somewhat forgive, or at least forget, the bad albums and appreciate them for being pretty damned awesome for nearly 10 years.
