Carry On Disarming

The thread on Snub reminded me of another video I bought in London at the same time as the Snub one (the TV show never made it to Norway, of course): NME and CND's Carry On Disarming. Given recent discussions on how conservative said paper has or hasn't been through the years, a look at the track listing would be interesting, eh?

Frank Sidebottom: Outro

And there you have it. OK, it does have a certain proportion of what may even then (in 1991) have been rather generic indie stuff, and it must be said it is rather, erm, white, but seen in retrospect, it could have been a lot worse, couldn't it? Discuss.

Or, if you prefer, name the bands on the compilation you admit to never having heard of.

Holy heck. That's like the first time I've ever heard the Bachelor Pad mentioned anywhere aside from my own head.

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I _knew_ I'd heard of them somewhere.

Curt, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Really about the only names I'm not sure I recognize are Bradford and The Carousel, which is not to say I ever heard everybody elses music. What stuck me was that I would have dated that more like 1989. How quickly things change. [sigh]

Curt, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dr and The Crippens doesn't ring any bells, and indeed neither does Bradford. But wow, what a video! I've always wanted a copy of You Made Me Realise, the one I taped off the tellie is bad because the reception was so terrible.

1) Curt: What stuck me was that I would have dated that more like 1989.

Thinking about it, I sort of agree. To tell the truth, I didn't check the video itself (and the box doesn't date it); I did a web search and got the date from the Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet website. I'll check this evening.

2) esoJim: I've also never seen a S3 video. That I would luv to see Well, not all of them are (usual mtv-style) videos per se, some live footage here and there, etc. I seem to remember that "Revolution" was a proper video, though.

3) Who were Thug, anyway? I seem to remember it was just three or four minutes of really dense noise.

4) Interesting to note that the only three bands present on both COD and the Snub video were Throwing Muses, House of Love, and... The Band of Holy Joy. Poor Holies, they never quite made it, did they?

"Holy heck. That's like the first time I've ever heard the Bachelor Pad mentioned anywhere aside from my own head."

Me too. I had the album "Tales of Hoffman". I bought it cos a local radio DJ in Stockport/Manchester kept playing the single "Country Pancake", and I liked it. That DJ was none other than Jon ROnson, TV and Guardian Journalist, conspiracy theorist and poor man's Louis Theroux. Funny old world.

#7th Disaster was done in '89. It doesn't look too bad to me, actually, but I do kind of have a soft spot for that era of indie, although I don't like much of the music that came out of it...

Personally, I'm not sure about Thug and The Three Johns. I definitely heard of The Bachelor Pad before, tho'.

I've also never seen a S3 video.

i've seen Hypnotized and Big City videos.

dr crippens were a napalm death type band. three johns were a leeds band, cant remember them really, bradford were morriseys favourite band for a period i think, and are named after my home town, although i believe they were actually from Blackburn

gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Three Johns were literally that. Langford from the Mekons and two more whose day jobs escape me. Politics. Guitars. Drum machines. I bet it sounds horribly dated now. Dr. and the Crippens: not to be confused with Dick Crippen, who played guitar in Tenpole Tudor videos.

Curt, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Indeed it was 1989, well done Curt.

Just ran through it for the first time in ten years -- that Mekons song was quite lovely, actually.

And actually I too bought the Bachelor Pad album because of that single.

Reading the list of bands made me feel very nostalgic. I was 18 in 1989 and I was obsessed with indie music at the time. I saw quite a few of those bands live during that period. I was even lucky enough to meet the legendary Frank Sidebottom once.

The video is very representative of those times. However, it is strange that the Pixies and Sonic Youth were not featured. I'm also surprised there isn't any British hip-hop on the tape. Artists such as Overlord X were regularly featured on the Peel show, and some appeared on "Snub TV" too.

Is Thug the Aussie scree-noise-electronica Tex Perkins side-project? I can't remember any other Thugs..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

esoJim: Is Thug the Aussie scree-noise-electronica Tex Perkins side-project? I can't remember any other Thugs..

Very possible. The fact that the track is also called "Thug" makes it seem likely that it may indeed be some sort of side project.

The video, by the way, is apparently directed by A Scientist... :-)
