i guess im wondering if there is wierd folk in Ireland. Irish stuff (older and contemporary) seems to rule the airwaves of the public and college chanels in nYC on sunday mornings. and ok, i go in for a variety of trad irish stuff, but most of what i hear is kinda hokey and very NPRish. i just wonder if there's something that takes the pogues concept but pushes it into psych territory. a modern take that goes far out, but still clings to the tradional.

not so freaky though, psych-tinted at best

oh sure that one tune is, i think i was just amused by the drummer's lighting bolt get-up. hadn't really listened to them before, some of their other early stuff sounded kinda close to the saggy-arsed dunt prog you'd find on labels like vertigo etc
― Papa Roachford (NickB), Saturday, 23 November 2013 09:17 (eleven years ago)
i only have one clannad album and that's magical circle or whatever it's called, the harry's game one. some jazzy pentangling on one of those songs you posted, i quite like that
― Papa Roachford (NickB), Saturday, 23 November 2013 09:21 (eleven years ago)
Clannad seem to be a bunch of Pentangle fans who thought they could apply the same approach to Irish trad. The 1st lp doesnt sound authentic. Seems to have a pop sensibility running through it.It does sound pretty fantastic though. Lovely lp. I've been listening to the 2nd Sweeney's Men lp Tracks of Sweeney all week since I saw the reunion gig. They're doing a short Irish tour now which may well be their last ever.Anyway I'd seriously recommend that which is probably easiest got on a Castle anthology containing both lps & related tracks. The lp itself has a spacious resonance and intricate playing I'd associate with psych/prog. Came out in 69. There is a current band called United Bible Studies that should fit your bill too. They were formed under the influence of core membes Gavin & Dave's love of ISB though their influences are wider going into avant garde & krautrock etc

would like to hear a wyrd dark folk/wickerman sdtk take on irish trad. everything here is either a more rock-orientated approach or hippie ISB folk.

A shamrock bass, apparently designed by the violinist or someone with the same name as the violinist.http://www.madnats.ch/horslips-vaults.htmlhttp://horslipsmusic.blogspot.com/2008/11/barry-devlins-bass-and-friends.html

A new 2-disc Horslips compilation was released earlier this month
― Duke, Saturday, 23 November 2013 20:11 (eleven years ago)
And definitely get the "Legend Of Sweeney's Men" anthology. Unfortunately none of their performances with Henry McCullough on electric guitar (as a replacement for Andy Irvine) survived on tape, IIRC
― Duke, Saturday, 23 November 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago)
If you want to check out a modern Irish group operating in this sort of area I would highly recommend United Bible Studies, their stuff is great.
― mirostones, Saturday, 23 November 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago)
Maybe you can give the recommendations on what to pick up with UBS since I wouldn't know where to start.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago)
Not folk-related, but Papa Sprain was a great post-rock-ish psychedelic (Northern) Irish project in the 1990s. related to Butterfly Child

do you guys know about fovea hex? don't know if they're still going but they're clodagh simmons from mellow candle plus various other people (think they worked with matmos at one point?) and they do drifting misty ambientish music that feels very rooted in folk music. got kind of a dark and mysterious feel to them i guess, but more from a sense of the music moving through twilight landscapes rather than anything obviously goth.
