LINDA PERRY
In Flight
(Kill Rock Stars/Custard; September 13, 2005)
There's an old saying that goes something along the lines of "if you love something, set it free; if it comes back it's yours". That's the sentiment behind In Flight. Consider it the long lost Linda Perry album. Written and recorded in 1995, it was quietly released and ignored the following year. In Flight has now returned for you to take in and make its splendor yours.

In Flight lets you get to know Linda Perry as, well, Linda Perry. Sure, we all know her history in 4 Non Blondes as well as her production work for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Kelly Osbourne, Courtney Love and others, but In Flight represents the heart and soul of who Linda is. It's a deep and endearing recording that with each subsequent listening reveals something you might have missed the first time around. Really...go ahead and give it a couple listens and see for yourself.
In Flight comes via the highly esteemed Kill Rock Stars as well as Linda's own label Custard.
Expect live shows later this fall from Linda, but in the meantime get in touch to rsvp your copy.

I hate here for pillaging "Fade to Grey"

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

hate her*

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

...exactly what is Kill Rock Stars doing being involved with this?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Paying the broadband bill? Porn is expensive.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

There is that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

i don't give a shit about her as an artist, but i love what she's done for pink/courtney/xtina.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

I admit I probably would be far less inclined to react with spasms of "GARG!" every time she is invoked were it not for the fact that the entirety of "What's Up?" -- sound, singing, yes even the lyrics -- made me want to burn down the entire Bay Area. Had she been an unheard flop who turned into a studio pro, things would be different.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

most big-time producers started out as unheard flops.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

But Ned, she tried! OH MY GOD, she tried!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

The single "Fill Me Up" wasn't too bad, actually. Her voice over it was awful, obviously, but it was fairly tuneful and pleasant, really. It doesn't, however, hint at all at what she'd do later.

I've seen it in bargain bins lots of times and always passed it by. No regrets about that, though.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

But Ned, she tried! OH MY GOD, she tried!

she tried all the time, in this institution?

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I have to hurt you both now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

She's feeling --- a little peculiar!

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

rsvp my copy? eh?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Reading the header makes me wonder what is Modern Talking and Baccara's unjustly forgotten masterpieces. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

"yes sir, i can frug"

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Does Perry have some sort of early lez punk history/cred with Spitboy or Tribe 8 that I'm missing?

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

linda or dan?

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

But Ned, she tried! OH MY GOD, she tried!
-- The Ghost of Dan Perry (djperr...), June 2nd, 2005.

I am most fortunate of all of you, as I can hear EXACTLY what Dan sounds like mimicing that line in my head. If I had an MP3, I would yousendit. I always did the "scream at the top of my lungs WHAT'S GOING ON!" part.

Good times, minnesota-stylee.

We both hate and hated the fucking song by the way. She must be stopped. You all know this in your hearts.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

if it helps i'm not so crazy about the production on sleeping in the nothing.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 June 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Screw you guyz! "What's Up" was just fine. Linda Perry was the Melanie of the '90s! (And that's just fine too.)

Please feel free to attack me mercilessly: I can take it! I am a rock.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

i sort of like "whats up", too.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Okay, now I have to hurt both of you in turn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned:

And I pray! OH MY GOD do I pray! I pray every single day! For revolOOOOOOOOOOOOOSHUUUUUUUH-UHN!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

dan, youre only fanning my love flames.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Every record would be enhanced by the aggravated squawk of a fishwive attempting to self-evacuate her compacted bowel.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

With a rusty crowbar.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

I saw her performing songs that were presumably from this album on some sort of "Skoal Bandits Rockin' America" package tour in the late 90s (Iggy was the headliner). As best I can recall, her set must have made me very thirsty, because I remember standing in a long line for expensive beer and hearing "What's Up" come rolling out over the crowd in all its glorious, hollerific horror.

brianiac (briania), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

whatever.. if this allows KRS to fund more stuff like reissues of Lilliput or Essential Logic, I'm all for it.. (although I don't immediately see how a Linda Perry album release can fund anything.. is KRS going to plan to market this to karaoke bars, the only bastion of 4 Non Blondes nostalgia or care left today?)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

THAT'S THE THING! I don't see how this makes sense at all! Everyone who likes Linda Perry already has everything they ever need to hear from her so how are they going to make any money off of this???

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

"Skoal Bandits Rockin' America"

The late nineties encapsulated.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

shrug.. it HAS been over a decade. I'm sure Perry and Slim became friends since via other friends etc. etc. and I'm not doubting Perry isn't cool in person.. maybe she's just as embarrassed of "What's Up?" now than any of us, for all we know. Maybe this solo album is a complete fucked up departure into discordant art rock...

..or not.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

(maybe i SHOULD start saying "Linda" instead.. jbr called it, yet I still ROFFLE when I substitute Dan in the same context.)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Maybe this solo album is a complete fucked up departure into discordant art rock...

I think we all need to reread the press release, folks. This is a *reissue* of a failed solo debut on Atlantic from 1996. What do you think it sounds like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

is KRS going to plan to market this to karaoke bars?

I wouldn't doubt KRS tries to market fucking Xiu Xiu to karaoke bars. They're total pros at this kind of thing.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

This is a *reissue* of a failed solo debut on Atlantic from 1996. What do you think it sounds like?

NO WAVE, of course! (haha, I have no idea.)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Linda got way into Lydia Lunch and Mars immediately after "What's Up?" became a hit, obviously, and oh the story.. it would make the Wilco movie seem like a two hour exec board meeting. you JUST DON'T KNOW, Ned. (RAWFFFFEL!)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I have visions. (They involve nausea.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't doubt KRS tries to market fucking Xiu Xiu to karaoke bars.

if you lived in philly, this could actually happen. one of the karaoke places here has an extensive book, including songs from local bands!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I need to see this place.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

And I say.....

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

BLURRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGH!

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

(ooops xpost - but I guess it's even better in context.)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

"..WHO'S THROWING UP!"

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Vomtastic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I was initially responding to the concept of Xiu Xiu being marketed to karaoke bars, but I'm really glad how this all turned out. (and now, I feel better! *wipes vomit off lips*)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Hooo.... HOOOOOO!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I only have unjustly forgotten masterpieces!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

SWINGIN LOW.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)
