Two of the finest songwriters of the last 50 years end up being remembered for yobbish 'political' chants.

Who is the most persuasive advocate?

Both are platitudinous crap but Lennon wins in this case by actually having a touch of humour about it. Macca loses out by blighting his otherwise exquisite Driving rain.

I don't know about the "end up being remembered for yobbish 'political' chants" conclusion.

Taking Sides: "When We Was Fab" vs "Free As A Bird"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Comparing one of Lennon's better solo singles with some of the worst wank that McCartney has ever produced. C/D

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

it's the beat, y'all

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Alfred, that's not even a contest. Anything tangentially related to Cloud Nine beats the poop out of "Bird".

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Both entirely dire.

John's passion makes "Peace" compelling, whereas when I hear Paul yell "FREEDOM!' I imagine that what he's really asking for is 'freedm to smoke lots of weed."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I'd go for that but,
Everybody's talking about Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism, This-ism, That-ism, ism, ism, ism

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I can't call the McCartney tune to mind, but I will say that I find "GPaC" utterly boring--draggy and repetitive in a bad way. (That is, the tempo's not inherently problematic, and repetition isn't inherently problematic, but the melody is insufficiently interesting to render the thousand choir-laden repetitions of it tolerable.)

"All You Need Is Love" is a hundred times better than "Give Peace a Chance."

The Mad Puffin, Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Man, "All You Need is Love" is barely a hundred times better than fascism

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

At least 'Give Peace A Chance' was vaguely related to a bunch of things that were actually good, eg the anti-Vietnam war movement, civil rights, etc.

'Freedom', on the other hand, is at best vague to the point of criminal negligence, at worst pretty much a neocon anthem. "We will fight for our right to freedom", post-911, pretty much a gift to Bush & co in terms of rhetoric.

"All You Need Is Love" is a hundred times better than "Give Peace a Chance."

Then, comparing John Lennon solo with The Beatles is kind of pointless. I mean, obviously The Beatles will always be better.

"Give Ireland Back To The Irish" vs. "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World"

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Personally I've got a soft spot for Give Peace a Chance, 'cos I used to play it really loud when I was a kid and it really made my mother mad ...

andyjack (andyjack), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I'll go with Lennon, but i'd rather not listen to either.

TS: Plastic Ono Band vs. Wings

Wait, that's too easy!

well, wings were more successful than POB surely ?
what are the sales figures of wings compared to the beatles' ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Wings was the second most successful act in the US of the '70s (Elton was first). Paul's had 8 number-ones, counting solo and collaborations.
