picked up "vision created newson" on the strength of a couple comments on this board and some reviews. i am really enjoying it and have only heard 3 of the "rebores",of which the eye remix (vol.0)is my favorite.

having said that, i am looking for recommendations on which boredoms release most resembles this latest offering? i want to buy more but am a little hesitant to buy without some suggestions,please....

Pumped up to full volume "Cory & the Mandara Suicide Pyramid Or Gas Satori" is one awesome song, It makes me get goosebumps every time they hit the "brush my one(?)" the third time. on the screech. I recommend this album: "Pop Tatari". But I think Ned Raggett could tell you more than I could.

A Nairn, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suppose I could, at that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thanks very much....upon reading some other reviews on the amg site ,i am thinking "super ae" is another title i should seek out?

william harris, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a good un, and on reflection is a bit of a role model for Vision...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Super Ae = very much like Vision Creation Newsun, but better.

You might also look into Super Roots 7 (a half-hour fantasia on the riff from the Mekons' "Where Were You?") and Super Roots 8 (a fab little drum 'n' bass-Boredoms-style single), though they're very expensive as imports.

Douglas, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

super ae! super ar! super are!! and super roots 5 is sampled on super are a few times, i'm fairly sure. worth looking around for on your favorite mp3 clearinghouse would be the EPs released around the VCN and super are CDs; there's one called "vision creation newsun" (confusingly) that has some fab remixes and a long live show, and there's a really nice bonus cd i've seen around that came with the VCN box. seek!! and if you like noisy fuckedness that isn't totally boredoms-esque, the related project the puzzle punks is great.

your null fame, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think DLeone is the resident Boredoms fan, but my personal opinion goes along with what is already being said- SuperAE.

Todd Burns, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ilx wuvs the boredoms. i think if you do a search in "uncategorized" you'll find at least three boredoms threads, which may give you some diff'rent perspectives. as for me: vcn = tops. (all you who cling to super ae are nutters.)
super ae = next in line.
super roots 7 = third
"early" boredoms - soul discharge, onanie bomb meets the sex pistols, pop tatari, chocolate synthesizer - less a "different" boredoms as some people claim than the boredoms in crysalis? definitely depends on yr tolerance for willful difficulty and NOIZE. also tops: eye's disc as dj pica pica pica. super roots 8 = never heard, but if someone wants to cd-r me it... (::cough cough::)

jess, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I concur with the Super ae, Super Roots 7 (which actually came after Super ae, and which I think sounds most similar to VCN), and Super Roots 8.

Further listening: Super Roots 6, featuring lots of electronic trickery, though a *lot* more low-key than VCN. Also, check out Eye's DJ Pica Pica Pica CD or the first Shock City Shockers CD.

Listening to do only after you've finished your post-1996 Boredoms homework: Rovo and OOIOO. Well, actually you can listen to them whenever you want.

dleone, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can do no more than echo the comments here -- the way to discover the Boredoms is to work backwards. I also prefer Super Ae, but that's where I fell in love w/ the band.

three years pass...
Today was my first experience with the Boredoms. I listened to Vision Creation Newsun and am very impressed with them (or VCN to be exact). What a great album - all the way through. Lovely lovely stuff.

I was thinking of creating a thread asking where to go next, but used the "search" function first and TADA! So I guess it's safe to say I should go with Super AE next..

it can only disappoint

I prefer Super AE to VCN (which I don't even really like, except for certain passages), but I'm not a very good Boredoms fan. Super Ae is more jagged, I guess. Rebore 0 draws a lot on VCN but is worth hearing in its own right (though not necessarily worth paying full import price for).

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 13 May 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

I just read that the Boredoms have released a new album two days ago, Seadrum/House Of Sun. And also read the crap review on AMG. What's with the play-by-play review anyway?

Would anyone object to getting the new record for the second Boredoms experience?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

I would.

Just go with Super AE. You'll like it.

- (smile), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Seadrum/House Of Sun was the best album released in 2004.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Aw I don't know the newer albums but what about being adventurous and getting Soul Discharge instead?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

Because it rules.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Rules what? Whom?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

That's an expression.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

It used to rule my living room with a rubber-tentacled fist.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

An expression of what?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 May 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

enthusiasm

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Explicate the rationale underlying said enthusiasm.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Not tonight, buddy.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Why?

(nb: my name is not Buddy. Do not confuse me with famous drummers)

Q: has any musician other than Buddy Rich ever used the word "clam" as a synonym for "bum note"?

("I think that's fairly much English")

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

get Chocolate Synthesizer.

Q: has any musician other than Buddy Rich ever used the word "clam" as a synonym for "bum note"?

Yep, that's pretty standard lingo for horn players fucking up a note. Brass players also use "cack", as in, "wow, he really cacked that", or "wow, what a cack".

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Get Pop Tatari or Chocolate Synthersizer.

Just got a mailout from Vice- they're streaming the new album. I was expecting it to be kind of "meh," but "Seadrum" is...Jesus. Ear-pummeling. In a very happy way.

Listen here.

Telephonething, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

If I really love "Seadrum", what should I get next?

(I haven't yet found any good noize-y record shops in Osaka tho.)

You could try Cisco, they just put out EYE's new solo record.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Are Boredoms more popular in U.S. than in Japan? I met a kid from Osaka last year, we were talking music & he seemed pretty knowledgeable but he had never heard of Boredoms. To me that was like if I never heard of Bob Seger.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Japan (at least in 1999 when they headlined Fuji-Rock, the biggest music festival in Japan), although there are many more bands at the Boredoms public-conscious level that gather as much/more attention. For example, Rovo are much, much more popular in Japan than Boredoms, and for good reason: the Boredoms broke up 5-6 years ago, a fact that doesn't get a lot of lip-service in the USA/UK.

Anarchy Way is just 777 from the Psy Harmonics comp which is a reprise of a shock city shockers track iirc

jw, Thursday, 19 May 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

Cisco might? o ace I've been looking for an excuse to go to shinsai.

So, Super AE, then?

spontine (cis), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Chocolate Synthesizer is DEF better than Pop Tatari I think. More cohesive. The first half of Pop Tatari < 1st half of Chocolate Synth. Second halves comprable.

Spontine, I'd say mix it up by getting one of the earlier albums before Super Ae. Like uhhhh Soul Discharge, Chocolate Synth or Pop Tatari.

Then Super Ae. Then mentalism via singles, side projects, eps, etc.
