maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

so far:

loverboy - good. doing "hero" by enrique iglesias
cece peniston - looks hotter than ever, sounds great. plans to sing faith hill.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

the host dude is cute!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

now a flock of seagulls is on!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

they're awful!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

the stranglers just got a plug! flock of seagulls are going to sing a ryan cabrera song!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

arrested development have the old man! awesome!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I was surprised to see the old man.

Why are they even faking the live musicians, though?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I really think the bands should be given points if they actually recreate some of their shtick. Like if Mike Reno wears the red headband and if Flock had some new wave fashion on instead of sweats and baseball caps. For still having the old man around Arrested Development get MAD points.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

arrested development = los lonely boys "heaven"

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

someone's got a SICK sense of humor over there

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

oh shit I forgot it was on today.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

You can still catch Tiffany and, um, someone else if you turn on the tv now. And then everyone coming back and doing a new song.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I have to assume this is the same host from the UK version?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Did Vernon Kaye host the UK version? He's hosting this one.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

yes, vernon kaye! he's so cute.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I thought Tiffany's breasts were going to pop out!

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Is Tiffany preggers, or just a victim of the post-mommy spread?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i didnt think there was anything wrong with the way she looked.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

my wife just said "get on ILM and ask 'em if Tiffany's pregnant"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

omfg i love tiffany so much. her performance was total diva-factor.

she can sing the socks off of everyone else performing. the crowd seemed to dig her too.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

She's no Debbie Gibson, that's for sure!

I didn't really think there was anything wrong with her appearance either except that I thought her nipple would pop out, as I said. My mother kept yelling at the television screen for her to put some clothes on, though.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I am not watching it (at work) but I am so rooting for Loverboy. I have no idea how they could pull off "Hero" though.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I always liked Tiffany more than Debbie Gibson because, instead of singing her own crappy songs, she had great taste in covers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

It's funny that back when she was a kid she'd hide those things behind baggy sweaters and denim jackets and now...she isn't.

I prefered Tiffany because she'd make those pukey sounds "into the NIAAHHHGHT"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

i didnt think there was anything wrong with the way she looked.

Well, I didn't either. She looked good. Just different than the last time I saw her (which was several years ago on VH1's The List).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

OMG LOVERBOY

It looks like Mike Reno's has lost a lot of weight! He can fit into tight pants once again!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

is he wearing the headband?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

My mother's flipped it away from Loverboy's performance of "Hero" but it sounded better than Enrique from what little I heard.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry but it couldn't sound better than Enrique's.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

i thought it was really good.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Awesome!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

wow, cece owns this.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

My favorite original performance of the night: Arrested Development.

My favorite cover performance will probably be: CeCe Peniston. Though I'll take a wait and see attitude there. (Hell, CeCe can sing circles around Faith Hill ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.)

Oops, dinnertime!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that too. She makes Faith Hill sound like an amateur.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, admittedly I liked to keep my headphones on while at the skating rink around the time Iglesias was everywhere.

My mother just flipped it back to CeCe Peniston and changed it back five seconds later because she thought she sounded as pitchy as the ladies on American Idol. *sigh*

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Mike Score lives in Cocoa Beach? Damn! I live about 10 miles away from him. I'm going to stalk him this weekend.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I never thought I'd say it's possible to butcher a Ryan Cabrera song but Flock are really doing some weird things with it.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard the original of this Ryan Cabrera song, so I can't contrast it at all. But AFOS makes it sound like an original.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Being forced to twerk a Cabrera song is Mike Score's karmic punishment for not using the original line-up and not wearing new wave duds.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I thought CeCe sounded really good!! She actually sold me on that slightly drecky song, which is really impressive.

Holy crap. AFOS = EMBARRASSING x1,500,000. This song DOES NOT FIT THEM! Mike Score, you did BAAAAAAAAAAAAADLY.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

miccio OTM

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like AFOS heard the Cabrera original once and then took the lyric sheet and tempo and come up with a completely different (and strangely grunge-esque) melody.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Score sounds like a yelpier, more out-of-breath Mick Hucknall.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Is he using ex-members of Suicidal Tendencies in his touring band?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

is he wearing the headband?

No, he wasn't :(

Their version was good, but it wasn't as good as Enrique's version. But the Mike Reno of 1983 would have been spectacular with that song.

I hope nobody here was a Flock of Seagulls fan. Ouch!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

stupid question: are the performers choosing the songs or what?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

haha 'i live in fayetteville - the deep south' hahahahaha my grandma lives there, it's fucking suburbia. to be fair evander holyfield and webster live there too.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

speech: you know her as a dancer.

wow, talk about an insult!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I never disliked the two AFOS singles I've heard (the obvious "I Ran" and "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)"), but I can't say I'm a fan by any means.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Wow, they were boring.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

It's just the two of them, the guy hasn't changed. The music's canned of course for this song and so muted that their voices stand waaay out in front. The lady sounds like she's doing karaoke, the guy sounds rather decent if a bit extravagant.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

They're covering "Days Go By?" WTF

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Juice Newton doing Ashlee Simpson's "Pieces of You" for a cover and Animotion will do "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas. Hmm. (ha, xpost)

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Here comes Shannon.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I always liked "Let The Music Play," but Shannon's diminshed talent is ruining it for me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

She's covering "Foolish" by Ashanti.

PM Dawn's NEXT!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I've always liked this song, too, because it reminds me of Yazoo's "Situation". At least Shannon was trying to move around -- although maybe she could've stayed still.

PM Dawn next!

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

ha, xpost again

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

We must be the only two people still watching.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid so. Where's Dee?

Look at that cross he's wearing on his necklace! You could crucify Jesus on that! It's huge!

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn should have had Spandau Ballet come out and back them up.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn gonna cover Puddle of Mudd WTF?

God, I don't want anyone to win tonight.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Shannon did much better than that *spit spit spit* FUCKING LOSER IRENE CARA OH I STILL HATE HER CAN YOU TELL, ETC. I won't get past that episode, quite obviously. I mean, you could actually pick out Shannon's voice from the voices of the backup singers, and Shannon actually hit the same high notes she hit in '84, though with a little bit more, er, grit. And she did it all while actually doing some serious moving, yes.

PM Dawn was... well, how could they have messed that one up? Actually, the actual singer guy still has a really good voice, while the rapper guy did start to grate on my nerves with his shoutiness. Part of the point of PM Dawn was that they were supposed to be mellow all around, poet and crooner comined.

Now for commercials. Ugh. Toyota commercials. They make me never want to purchase a Toyota ever in my entire life. I hate those little brats!

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere. :)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I really hope Missing Persons RULZ

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

NEXT UP -- MISSING PERSONS OMG THIS SHOULD RULE DALE BOZZIO IS ONE OF THE COOLEST ROCK CHICKS IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK. Ha. NOOOO, I'm not at all biased because this is the band that Warren Cuccurullo was a member of prior to his joining you-know-who. ;) Actually, I will on occasion, out of the blue, get "Walking In L.A." stuck in my head. And "Destination Unknown" is SO awesome. And "Words", which is what I think they're going to perform, ain't half bad.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

So do I, Johnny Fever.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's only Dale... but it sounds decent.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I've heard about her forgetting the words to "Words" in concert so many times. I'm amazed she's pulling it off at all this time.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

SHE'S GONNA DO "CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD" OMG

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Heh. I could have told you that, Johnny -- it's been the Dale Bozzio & Co. Show for quite awhile. The Missing Persons reunion with Terry Bozzio & Warren Cuccurullo lasted only until the end of 2001; then after that, Dale reverted back to the touring band she's been using to tour the Missing Persons name around. Actually, she has every right to do that, since her voice was the most distinctive part of the band's sound.

Heh. I wonder what Dale & Co. are going to do with a Kylie song.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

I still don't want anyone to win tonight, but if I was really pressed to choose, I'd root for Shannon.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

For some reason, I thought Warren and Terry were with her now. I guess I've got no concept of time.

DALE DOING KYLIE OMGWTF

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I do like that she's consistent with her hairstyle. She looked exactly that same way hair-wise back in the late '90s, when VH1 or some other channel caught up with her doing her thing as a wife and mother in Long Island, though it looks like she's gained a few points since that time. But hey, she's probably got teenaged kids -- how many of us remember what our mothers looked like when we were teens?

(xpost) Anyway. I am hoping on Missing Persons, but I won't be too disappointed if they don't get it. I'm adopting a wait-and-see attitude on everyone, actually.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

This Ashlee Simpson song sounds weird without falling apart after 10 seconds and an elfin jig breaking out.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

(BTW, the "she" in the first paragraph of that last post o' mine? Referring back to Dale Bozzio, obv.)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

This Ashlee Simpson song sounds weird without falling apart after 10 seconds and an elfin jig breaking out.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Juice Newton owns that song now. She does. She is at least 50 million times more talented than Ashlee Simpson, and I don't even LIKE country.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

My mother's changed the channel halfway through Juice Newton's cover so I can't comment on it. It didn't seem so terrible to me.

HAHAHA Johnny! xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Here goes Animotion's cover. It's about what I've expected and better than what they did a few minutes ago with "Obsession".

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I like that Animotion's now got their original female singer in. For awhile there, the female singer in the group was Cynthia Gibb. I think.

OMG. Animotion are amazing. I thought I'd never say that, but it's true.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Ian, you were right. Animotion just sounds like a bad night at karaoke.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Juice and Animotion can still sing, that's for sure, but their voices didn't mesh with the songs they picked. They sounded like karaoke done really well, i.e. competently sung but very amateurish.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

So what would you have accepted from their cover performances, Barry?

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

OH DEAR GOD ANOTHER TOYOTA COMMERCIAL FEATURING BRATTY KIDS. Oh yes, for sure I won't purchase a Toyota, not even if that's the only vehicle available to me and my vehicle at present is DEAD.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Anyway. Back to talking about show.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Dee, I don't expect them to pwn the songs, but most performers on this show have done a decent job of picking songs that suit their voices, or altering the music and/or vocal arrangement to fit their style better. I don't think Juice or Animotion did either of those things.

Shannon was great.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Shannon now doing Ashanti. It makes decent background music if nothing else. I'm not very inspired by it but then again I'm feeling cynical today about this lineup.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh my, here goes PM Dawn doing "Blurry".

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

"...a successful vegetarian?" I think that's what Prince P said.

Puddle of Mudd translates well to and R&B arrangement, methinks.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Awww, giving out flowers, how cute...

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Wow! PM Dawn gets my vote.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure I've ever heard the original ... but I can't believe I just enjoyed a Puddle of Mudd song. I'll second Johnny's vote.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

I DO NOT like this cover of Kylie.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

OTM. Even if it wasn't sung well! xxpost

Oh goodness, here goes Dale and co. -- she's messed up a few snippets of the lyric. It sounds like a terrible parody of Goth music or something.

Barry, the original "Blurry" pales in comparison.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

It'll be Shannon or PM Dawn that wins. Unless the audience is on crack like that night Irena Cara won.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of dodgy karaoke ...

A fairly weak episode this week, but it's definitely a two-act race, unless the audience is, as Ian stated, crack-addled.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Yay audience!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

PM Dawn is tha winnah!

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Dee, I don't expect them to pwn the songs, but most performers on this show have done a decent job of picking songs that suit their voices, or altering the music and/or vocal arrangement to fit their style better. I don't think Juice or Animotion did either of those things.

Point taken. I guess I automatically expected pretty much almost every single one of these artists to mess up the songs they selected to cover, so I was glad when they sounded pretty good. Actually, I think Animotion could've just made a few tweaks with their "Days Gone By" cover and made it sound like what it is you were looking for.

Missing Persons (well, Dale & Co.) really disappointed me with the Kylie song. I thought for sure they'd do more of an Arrested Development and that Dale would try to tailor the song to what her voice can and does indeed do. But, alas. The people who DID do an Arrested Development tonight, though, i.e. PM Dawn, WON! And I'm so insanely happy for them. I still think the rappers should seriously calm the hell down and just try to sound like they're rattling off poetry, which lends itself mightily to their sound, but the big guy in PM Dawn STILL HAS IT and they actually managed to make a Puddle Of Mudd song sound REALLY, REALLY PRETTY, which is SO great.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 1 July 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)
