Hi! My Name Is...

Something I mentioned on another thread: There don't seem to be any musicians with the name 'Jones' that are any good.

Evidence: Howard Jones, Grace Jones, Jesus Jones, John Paul Jones, Ricky Lee Jones, Nicky Jones (aka Wire), Aled Jones... I admit I've not heard George Jones, but I remain unconvinced.

Which leads me to two questions: Are there any good Jones'? Are there any other similarly cursed names?

Oh yeah, forgot- Kelly Jones, who started this whole thing off in the first place. And didn't Counting Crows have a song about a Mr Jones or something? If that isn't a sign, I don't know what is...

Jonesi Mitchell.

Ronan, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, _something_'s happening here. Wish I knew what.

Douglas, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OBJECTIONS! Grace Jones = fab. Similarly, Rickie Lee Jones circa Pirates.

Tim, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Paul Jones, i.e. 'the only subtle musician in Led Zeppelin' ?? I don't know about his thing with Diamanda Galas, but his old-school days rock.

Mick Jones, of the Clash? well, at least before the Big Audio days ..

Dare, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't David Bowie's real name David Jones?

Robin, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

monkees

jess, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grace Jones = Murderer of Warm Leatherette. Hate hate hate forever. Rickie (correct spelling, sorry) Lee Jones = just *yawn* blurgh. John Paul Jones = nobody even vaguely associated with Led Zep can be good. Mick Jones = Clash are horrid and pointless. David Bowie/Jones = well, he did some good stuff, but if you think about it, you can see the inherited badness trying to creep out of all of it, can't you?

emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Davey Monkee Jones = Lovely lad I'm sure, The Monkees were actually quite good, but he had nothing to do with that. They were a fake band.

emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think this thread (Bowie, Ricky Lee, George) has already disproved the central argument.

But it should be added that - musicians aside - you occasionally come across ace *producers* called Jones.

You working with Quincy now, PF? So that's where you've been.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You working with Quincy now, PF?

You tryin' to say the Pinefox's musical career is dead?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian Jones.

Daniel, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cliff Jones = Gay Dad. Case proven, m'lud.

chris j, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another odd name is Webb. People always work under a pseudonym - well at least Gary & Harry do. Re John Paul Jones, for me, his one saving grace is his work with Francoise Hardy, on Ma Jeunesse Fout le Camp - c'est super bien!

Jez, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GEORGE JONES!!!!

Pete, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

goeff, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Celine Dion and Dion of Dion and the Belmonts are also both crap.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Jones... no, George Jones is a brilliant singer. And his autobio is brilliant... one morning, following a night in which he drunkenly wrecked his Cadillac into a fence, his wife hid his keys... so to get beer, he drove a riding lawn-mower 18 miles to the nearest beer store. Hi Emily!

Andy, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love all the Jones mentioned here to some degree. Particularly George and Tom and both Davids. I even like Kelly, if only for his smoldering snaggle-toothed good looks. Oh okay, I don't really think Jesus Jones were any good. And I've never heard of Aled Jones.

I also love the Jones Girls and LA Johnny Thunders-wannabes the Joneses. I think "Basketball Jones" by Cheech and Chong was a fab single. Great falsetto.

Are there any good Molkos?

Arthur, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Jones is ace, of course.

Brian Molko has a few catchy songs but is hideous... maybe if he gave me enough drugs I'd do him doggy-style, tho.

Sean, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whoa whoa--hold your horses here...you can't just say something like:

"Clash are horrid and pointless." - emil. y

do you gots any reasons? horrid and pointless are pretty strong words. i would very much beg to differ, but i can't even comprehend why someone would make a statement like that.

cybele, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

on the canadian version of the program 'popstars' we saw an all girl group get together instead of a 'co-ed' group. the whole thing was pretty boring compared to the english one. there aren't any tabloids here to rake muck.

they picked the name 'sugar jones'.

less grammatically horrifying than hear'say (or whatever)

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thad Jones, Sam Jones, Hank Jones, ELVIN JONES. (and what's more, they're brothers as well!)

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT SUGAR JONES

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[Ooh... do me]

Rock n' roll could never hip-hop like this.

Jack Redelfs, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

emil.y Sounds like you don't like ANYTHING.

Pump Wellington, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am 100% w/emil.y re clash "horrid & pointless", but myust say that I think Grace Jones is fantastic. Esp. "Slave to the rythmn"

Norman Phay, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
