VIDEO NASTIES!

INTERPOL have sensationally snubbed the video art-form – because they find the process tiring.

For ‘Narc’, the next US single to be taken from their second album ‘Antics’, they’ve not even made one at all.

Talking to MTV News, guitarist Daniel Kessler explained the snub: “We’ve made some videos that we all stand by, and they are good videos,” he said, “but it takes a lot out of you. It’s a lot of repetitive things, doing it over and over again.”

On choosing ‘Narc’ for their new single, which will be out later this summer, Kessler continued: “It’s probably one of the more collaborative tracks we’ve ever done. I had a main riff, and everyone started adding their own little piece that made the song really develop and become its own entity.

“Then when we went back to the chorus, Paul (Banks, singer) and I spontaneously went to the same chords. It’s one of those songs that’s really difficult stylistically from the album, but everything that happened happened without (discussion). It was all on instinct.”

The band's next UK single will be a a re-release of 'Slow Hands' on June 27.

Are they going to Pearl Jam us?

Interpol: "over" in 1983.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

what hints at them being over in that news item?

ppp, Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how much 'antics' sold

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

VIDEO "ART-FORM" HAR DE HAR HAR.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 4 June 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

OMG THEY HAVE "SENSATIONALLY SNUBBED" IT AS WELL!!!1

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 4 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Conversely, I think this could add to their longevity and future quality.

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

“Then when we went back to the chorus, Paul (Banks, singer) and I spontaneously went to the same chords.

Wow, there's only a what, 80% chance of that happening in an Interpol song?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Videos are not an "art-form", they are marketing tactics. At least in America, the only videos that seem to get played are from top 10 artists. No one else has any marketing reason to make a video anymore. Whatever caused Interpol to become famous, it wasn't MTV, so I don't blame them for not bothering anymore.

the guy that says stuff, Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I have never seen an Interpol video.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

There was an episode of The O.C. where two completely unconnected characters just happened to play the same Interpol song in their houses. It seemed rather implausible, but it made me realise the extent to which they've "made it". Maybe they should just stop releasing singles altogether and devote themselves to soundtracking Mischa Barton's pouts.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, I may have seen the "PDA" video.

I'm pretty sure Ween has made 2 official videos in the last ten years, over the course of their last 4 albums.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

um, maybe they're not making a video because their singer has grown fatter and more pimply with every day? "Slow Hands" was all wide shots and extreme close-ups, "Evil" had no band whatsoever and "C'Mere" is even more exaggerated than "Slow Hands."

I'm not hatin', I'm just saying that this can't be good for your band's sexy shtick and I think its funny how they go about dealing with it.

The voice and the body really don't go well together. He is supposed to be skinny and sallow.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

All he needs to do is spike the hair and add the mascara and the transformation into Robert Smith will be complete.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Nice watch, though.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

they're hardly over, though. If anything this totally fits an REM trajectory? Stipe refers to the time he recorded Fables as his "fat brando" period, if I'm not mistaken.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

That's him in the spotlight
Losing his complexion

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

haha and I forgot, he uses a scarf to try and hide that second chin in "C'Mere"

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I guess I should explain. When you are not Pearl Jam and have sold millions of records you should use every avenue you can to see some. So to give up on videos already is just stupid for any indie band.

This just felt like the record label was not going to finances any new videos, so it was just a matter of time before they were dropped. I know that is probably not the case as Interpol are doing O.K.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

they already made three for this album. I didn't see anywhere were they say they'll never do it again, just not one for "NARC."

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I can't see them making another album after this one. I'll be surprised if they do.

-- the guy that says stuff (gu...), June 4th, 2005.

I have never seen an Interpol video.

For some reason, even though I don't have cable, for a long time we could pick up MTV 2 on channel 56 for months. Every time we switched to MTV 2 for a period of two months or so, "Obstacle 1" was playing.

The plastic yoghurt guns of Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Looks like he got into meth. Having video or pics taken of him will "steal his soul" or so he probably thinks.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

If he was in to meth he wouldn't be chubby.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

does anyone REALLY like this group? I mean like, rabid teenage fanatics or anything like that?

Richard K (Richard K), Sunday, 5 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they are giving up on videos as Matador won't cut them a big enough check to hire Hype Williams.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 5 June 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

does anyone REALLY like this group? I mean like, rabid teenage fanatics or anything like that?

god, i LOVE that first album but i'm not a teenager. The last time i saw them was in one of the biggest venues in glasgow and it was so oversold i thought i was going to get crushed to death.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 June 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Bands like this shouldn't appear in their videos anyway. Let an animation student come up with something for their portfolio instead.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 5 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Actually, if anything, this NME non-story means Interpol are still riding pretty high: behold music magazines bending over backwards to come up with "news" about them. I mean, stop the fucking presses - Interpol skip a link in the promotional chain for their third single!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

and just to prove how non-over they are, "slow hands" has now been playlisted on Radio 1, second time around. so they're likely to get bigger from now on...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 5 June 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

God help us all. No I can't say that as Interpol are alright, there are much wrost things out there.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Interpol is unlistenable.

cdwill, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

if they do follow the Pearl Jam trajectory, does this mean Matador will have to halt signing any bands for five years as they prepare the 100 Interpol Live CDs series?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Tim, good point, but that happens on 'The O.C.' all time -- even with Boyz II Men a month or two back. But I'm with you.
