FACT: La Dusseldorf is the greatest album by any Krautrock band ever.
This is not my opinion but was in fact divined to me by a revelatory listen to Dusseldorf and Time earlier today. At College.

You, sir, are correct. Have a banana.

the La! Neu? cd "Zeeland" is A+
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know what this is. But I am sure that I will do my best to track it down only to be disappointed because nothing is as good as the all powerful La Dusseldorf.
― I know, right?, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
it's Dinger with new pals and female singer. Kinda like Spectrum meets 2nd wave Love Rock
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Zeeland is pretty good. Doesn't blow my mind, but not much does. I be demanding.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)
Dinger + anything really = Pure gold. Will track down. Thank you sexy dancer. Female singer though! I just realised in that post what a lads only club Krautrock was. Britpop bedamned!

― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)
The two-disc live version goes all over the map from solo piano mood pieces, to thunderous percussion workouts, to long stretches of dead silence.
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)
Ja, I know, not many women in Kraut. There's Gille Lettman and Rosi Muller that I can think of straight away. There must be some other obvious ones, though...
― emil.y, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
Amon Duul had women
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)
oh yeah
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)
or should I say JA JA!
That's true. None of the women were ever 'big names' though, in the way that Klaus Schulze or Dinger or ANY member of Can etc were. I guess I kind of think of Gille in that way, but that is very likely to just be me.

I suppose you could make a case for Krautrock being all forward thrusting motion, hyper masculine, etc. But so much of it is so pretty.
― I know, right?, Thursday, 18 October 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)
That depends what you mean by Krautrock.
That's true. None of the women were ever 'big names' though...
Renate Kroetenschawanz-Knaup is a pretty, uhhhhhhhhh, big name.

Wow. I can't stop staring at that last picture...
And thanks, y'all, for reminding me how awesome that 1st LD album is. Peeps always be repping Viva (which I love), but the 1st is closer to Neu! and nails a slightly different, tho' equally upbeat vibe. It really defines Germany in the mid 70s in my mind, so tied up with those early Wim Wenders films, Alice in the Cities and the like.
― myopic_void, Thursday, 18 October 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)
Tom's pic is nice.
That first one is "Supertramp meet two fans"
― Mark G, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)
Wait, is this a joke about the length of the name? I automatically assumed that it was some sexist remark about the size of her boobs or something but now I see that it probably isn't. Let me know if it actually is so I can get all offended again. Cheers.
Also, I have the same problem with people choosing Viva over the first one. I mean, yeah 'White Overalls' etc, it's all groovy, but THIS IS THE BEST PIECE OF KRAUTROCK EVER RECORDED.
― emil.y, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)
It's a long name.
I don't really understand how anyone could find "Viva" better than the 1st album.
― Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks people, I'm humming "Silver Cloud" right now :)
― willem, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

― zappi, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)
I menschen it a lot
― Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)
That Menschen 1/Individuellos/Menschen 2 suite thing
Yeah, Viva loses out to the first album any day.
― I know, right?, Thursday, 18 October 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)
Whenever I listen to LaDusseldorf, the overwhelming image in my head is of waves crashing, especially Dusseldorf it sounds like each wave comes crashing in drowns out the sound and pulls back to reveal it again. More tidal than motorik essentially.
― I know, right?, Friday, 1 August 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)
I finally just got "Individeullos"and i am loving it just as much as the first two. the moment at the end of "menschen 2" where the motoric finally subsides revealing the shimmering guitar and synth drones washing below, What a unique excellent sound these guys had!

― pay to the order of Iron Balls McGinty, $1 and 9 cents (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 September 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
that's also great
i remember reading that these albums weren't sufficiently srs or alt so i neglected them as a neu! fixated 17 yr old
don't know where i got that terrible idea from but fuck that shit
― E-Mil Cioran (nakhchivan), Friday, 24 September 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)
Jumping on the Viva bandwagon. Geld...geld....geeeeeeeeeld!
― Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Friday, 24 September 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)
I've just discovered the self-titled, which is every bit as great as the Neu! albums. Can't help thinking this is underrated, and I should have been compelled to buy it years ago. Viva next.
― Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 1 October 2010 09:12 (fifteen years ago)
Of course, commercially, La D were more successful than Neu ever were
― Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 1 October 2010 09:14 (fifteen years ago)
Not the impression you get when discovering them retrospectively in the 90s though.
― Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)
Of course. Michael Rother solo was far more successful than Neu too.
― Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)
Was La Dusseldorf actually mainstream-popular in Germany? Never heard them mentionned apart from Neu geeks but wouldnt be suprised if they had charted at the time.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:11 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know how the charts work in Germany but, yes, my copy of the first album has a sticker saying "Contains the hit single, 'Silver Cloud'". Also K. Dinger got annoyed with J. Cope for saying 'Silver Cloud' was their big hit because he said 'Rheinita' was a much bigger hit. As for M. Rother, "Flammende Herzen" (at least), sold a lot in Germany.

― Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:23 (fifteen years ago)
don't know if they're as great as the s/t neu! albums, at their best they were just about as good as music got in the latter half of the 20th c
damn good nonetheless
― The Managing Director of Being (nakhchivan), Friday, 1 October 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)
surprised there has not been one post on the La Neu! album Blue, which is basically the fifth La D album (Neondian was the fourth). it starts on a weird note but has some real moments of serene beauty ("Lilenthal" is pure bliss) and the extended, presumably live cut of "America" is the hardest they've ever rocked and could easily go on for even longer. I really can't understand why this wasn't released at the time it was recorded!
