if a mod could correct the messed up grammar in that thread title I'd be grateful.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

I doubt a Jay-Z hits collection is far off. Oh wait... well now that he's "retired" a new one is probably in the works.

My other nomination is Sleater-Kinney. A 10 year round up of singles would be nice.

Jonathan Lee (JonG), Saturday, 4 June 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

i predict 4 xmas (i won't be buying any of these)
eminem ( a million single so far)
hilary duff (too soon but 2 new songs would be enough)
destiny's child (current album seelling much lower)
hanson (internet only)
i'd like to see
spice girls (ten hits)

ross tinney, Saturday, 4 June 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

Not that they ever had any real "hits", but....COP SHOOT COP. A compilation with some rareities would be nice. Breath holding I am not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

a Foo Fighters one must be in the works

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Missy was the first name that jumped to my mind, and maybe a tracks-produced-by-Timbaland greatest hits compilation as a bonus disc for the likes of "Are You That Somebody", "Pony" and "Cry Me A River".

They may have already done one I don't know about but how about Weezer? They've done five albums now so they could easily fill a CD.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

Has Oasis done a greatest hits package?

If not then they must be the only big britpop band not to have one.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

De La Soul is definitely due for a greatest hits. If for no other reason there are some some later tracks that aren't 'hits' per se but would probably get more attention if tempered with familiar tracks.

Also Public Enemy Should at least re-issue a their 'Greatest Misses' Comp.

Speaking of greatest misses I would also stab whoever I need to for re-issue of Ryko's Devo 'Hardcore 74-77' Comp.

Particle Ranger (particle ranger), Saturday, 4 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I have the De La Soul one - http://www.discogs.com/release/292584

admittedly it doesn't cover their last album but it's been sort of done.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 4 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

The De La comp is one of the best of the last few years.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 4 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

There are THREE different De La best ofs already!

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 4 June 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Why are greatest hits albums so necessary? Would it be so bad if there were a few bands that never released any? For example, the Nirvana disc was pretty terrible and unnecessary, and the band's catalogue would have been much better off without it. Same with GNR. And I know a lot of people disagree with me on this, but I feel the same way about the recently crowned "Diamond" 1 by The Beatles, their worst collection ever. The idea behind Junior MAFIA's greatest hits seems superfluous as well.

Ween has never released one, which I'm completely fine with. I don't recall one from Pavement either, which is ok with me. I don't think Nine Inch Nails or Rage or Beck needs one anytime soon. I pretty much think comps are unnecessary for bands with 3 or less albums, or bands like NIN whose material was highly spread out over time and would make for a disjointed sounding compilation.

However, I would definitely buy retrospectives from Slayer, Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse. I suppose a They Might Be Giants collection would be cool.
also..
Metallica
Megadeth
King Missile
The Flaming Lips
Mudhoney
Ash
Pulp
Atari Teenage Riot
Kool Keith

I'm not sure how I would feel about Radiohead's Greatest Hits. I'm on the line with that one.

A Wu-Tang collection including the most popular group AND solo tracks would be outstanding.

A Phish collection might be cool if the jammy crap was flushed out and the nice 4-minute pop songs were left in. However I'm sure there's no way the band would approve that, even though it's the only way a Phish Greatest Hits would be tolerable.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Cornelius (two discs and a DVD)
Prince Paul (DITTO)
Stars (if the Jaxx can do one 3 albums in)
Timbaland (3 discs and DVD)

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

There exists a Pulp hits collection called...'Hits'. It is a very good one.

xpost

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Beck should have one. The Dust Brothers should have put theirs out years ago, but've chosen not to, I guess.

Of course there's the fabled My Bloody Valentine collection...

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. And the Kate Bush album :-P

(believe both when I see them).

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I suppose a They Might Be Giants collection would be cool.

They're up to their third-ish: a live one when they couldn't get rights to Elektra stuff, a double-CD later, and just recently a single-disc mostly of stuff on the double.

Ash too afaik.

No, they did one about two years ago - one disc of singles, one of best-of-the-b-sides.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I take back the "winner is Radiohead" bit. Their fans have all the studio albums.

The band that would best benefit from a greatest hits, to show how many unbelievable songs they have over the course of their career is my beloved Local H. They have that unfortunate "one hit wonder" status for Bound To The Floor, but in truth they've released as many great rockers as anybody in the last ten years. If they made a killer 1 cd compilation with all their best songs, it would be revelatory.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I meant Ash _have_ put one out (forgot the xpost).

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Back in the days of the vinyl album, Coldplay's "Greatest Hits" album probably would have arrived around Christmas this year, after 2-3 hits being pulled from their forthcoming album, adding up to what they have already released. In the age of the 16-20 track CD, they will need a couple more albums before they are ready for it though.

However, Stereophonics must be close to have one ready now, aren't they?

Of course, Oasis OTM.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

A proper live album by the Wedding Present (preferably a recording of an older line-up than the one making the rounds today) would be nice.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 4 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Back in the day the Weddoes did a whole series of live tapes which you could buy at their shows. I've got number three in the series Rotterdam 30 March 1988. Great quality. They should put them out as a box of CDs.

everything, Saturday, 4 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

They're up to their third-ish: a live one when they couldn't get rights to Elektra stuff, a double-CD later, and just recently a single-disc mostly of stuff on the double.

I have Severe Tire Damage. "Greatest Hits Live" doesn't exactly count as a best-of album, although it IS a great CD.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

50 fucking Cent. Too much filler, just enough killer.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about mentioning Local H earlier. The thing about this, however, is that they have so many great album tracks, especially on the 2nd and 3rd albums, it would be difficult to make the call as to what to include/exclude.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Slayer should put out the first two CDs of that Soundtrack To The Apocalypse box for about $18. It only has their Def-era stuff, but at least it has live versions of "Chemical Warfare," "Hell Awaits" and "The Anti-Christ" to remind people that they put out records before meeting Rick Rubin.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Nine Inch Nails should release one after one more album.
Garbage's should be on it's way.
Blink 182 now that they're on "indefinite hiatus"

The only one of those I'd like to see though is the NIN one.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Saturday, 4 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Sebadoh or perhaps even better just a best of Lou Barlow across all of his recording projects.

An overview of all of Will Oldhams different projects under one collection could be really good.

King Missle is a good call.

Mudhoney has a real well put together collection called "March to Fuzz", which includes a rad second disk of b-sides, singles and odds and ends.

The Melvins could use an all killer no filler career spanning compilation, although somehow or someway it would probably end up sequenced in a way that was annoying.

Not that I would buy these comps, as I am already a fan, but these groups could use overviews to g

Husker Du
fIREHOSE
Fu Manchu
The Feelies
Clutch
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Pere Ubu (2cd's over entire career)
Monster Magnet
Royal Trux

A few compiations that I would like to have would include:

Death of Samantha
Flipper
The Gun Club
Killing Joke (2cd's over entire career)
Elvin Jones' 60s Blue Note albums

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

radiohead don't need a collection of greatest hits, they need to neatly collect their b-sides and release an offical collection of them.

"Greatest Hits Live" doesn't exactly count as a best-of album, although it IS a great CD.

I said -ish! The redundancy between Dial-A-Song and the new one is k-lame though.

An overview of all of Will Oldhams different projects under one collection could be really good.

BPB Sings Greatest Palace is sort of an attempt at this, I guess.

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 5 June 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

this would be a fantastic and fascinating artifact. pulp should do the same as well - my CD-R ofhis'n'hers and different class b-sides is fucking amazing.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 5 June 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Earl's list is right on!

I'm not going to wish for Bob Seger's Greatest Hits That Were Hits In Detroit Only for the 79th time - I'll leave that to Xhuxk. Personally, I wish there was a Neil Sedaka comp that contains both his late '50s-60s hits, and his mid-70s "comeback" ones. (Every collection I've ever seen is "either/or".)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 5 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

the strokes, cuz they rule!

ready 2 weaf (drystereo), Sunday, 5 June 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I think the strength of Radiohead b-sides is a little over-stated. There's only really three songs I'd consider the equal of any album cuts - Polyethylene (Part 1 And 2), Talk Show Host and Worrywort. The rest just strike me as good, but clearly 'bonus' material. That reworking of 'Where Bluebirds Fly' live (recently YSI'ed) was pretty great as well though.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 5 June 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

How about a David Lee Roth era Van Halen comp?

Ash have put a single collection called Intergalactic Sonic 7"s which is pretty damn good (they're a great singles band) but it also has a b-sides bonus disc too which is almost as good.

Also, it won't be until at least Christmas but what about Daft Punk?
