Dreamy Expansive Quasi-Acid House Pop

I'm thinking of stuff like Paul Rutherford's "Get Real" from Ivan Smagghe's Death Disco mix, and Midi Rain's "Always" on Ellen Allien's My Parade mix... I love these two songs and the idea that they project: epic eighties post-"Bizarre Love Triangle" eunuch-pop colliding with programmed snare drums and acid burbles into an explosion of endless touchy-feely dancing at the end of the world emotionalism

I want more stuff like this, new stuff but especially stuff from the late eighties/early nineties period that these two tracks date from. New Order's Technique is the obvious answer (and related stuff like 808 State's "Spanish Heart") but any obscure stuff esp. would be much appreciated.

Also, talk about these tracks and how awesome they are.

I want more stuff like this

Not exactly on the same page, but try:

Electribe 101
"Tell Me When The Fever Ended"
"Talking With Myself"

A Guy Called Gerald
"I Won't Give In"

Cause & Effect
"Another Minute"

Groove Corporation
"Your Eyes"

have you heard any of the razormaid comps, tim? probably some of what you're looking for there...

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Wow those look amazing, but I don't know how I'd ever find them.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 June 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

These sound fantastic.

The Razormaid comps or the two tracks I start the thread with? If you haven't heard the latter deej you need to fix this up quick sharp, you will love them and the mixes they come from.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Or rather, sound like they ARE fantastic. I mean everything in the thread really, I will defintiely check them out.

When I get off work :(

deej., Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

we need someone to come in here and drop some yousendit links like in that italo thread (Italo Disco CDr of DOOM). i don't have any of the razormaid comps unfortunately. they used to be pretty easy to find in the used bins, but i haven't looked for a long time. a lot of those tunes fit the "euphoric with hints of apocalypse" description that you give above. those italo discs wouldn't be a bad place to start either.

two years pass...

Anybody going on this?

First thing that pops into my head is The Beloved - "The Sun Rising" but my favorite thing in this vein (if in fact I'm reading it right) is Frazier Chorus - "Nothing"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GieeErXHsz0

After Frazier Chorus (and after marrying Alan McGee), Kate Holmes formed Technique whose "Sun is Shining" might also fit:

I was just thinking that the Frankie Knuckles mix of "Blind" by Hercules and Love Affair works in this style too.

For those seeking Razormaid comp stuff upthread, be sure to check out the the "Robot Dancing" comps. All killer:

It makes me think of 808 State.

fields of salmon, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

... But that Frazier Chorus track is niiiiiiiiiice

fields of salmon, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

The 'Raid' mix is an amazing extended version of that radio edit (both by Oakenfold actually).

Spencer Chow, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

Missing the Moon by The Field Mice. Don't laugh, it's true.

flowersdie, Friday, 15 February 2008 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

nami shimada 'sunshower' is a bit like this. it's in japanese so i don't have a clue what she's saying but it's pretty gorgeous, nice background vocoder. mixed by larry levan, i believe, which surprised me. i'm tempted to say the def mixes of propaganda's 'your wildlife' cos i love them so much but they aren't very quasi-acidic. i'm sure there's loads more as the way tim describes this it sounds like my favourite music ever. i'll rifle through the collection...

"dead eys open"?

r1o natsume, Friday, 15 February 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

i've got one of those razormaid comps and i'm not exactly sure it'd be 'quasi-acid house pop'. it's just re-edits of italo songs (and has yoko ono's 'walking on thin ice' - why i bought it)

jaxon, Friday, 15 February 2008 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

a bit more acidic: tot 'what you are'.

or something, Friday, 15 February 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Miss Nicky Trax - Acid in the House http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvu3eJB48VM

jaxon, Friday, 15 February 2008 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

not so dreamy. not so quasi

jaxon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

But certainly acidic. Great vid too, as a kind of obesity focus group with Frazier Chorus vid linked upthread. (Actually I can't get over how great all the videos are. I have also been watching the "Voodoo Ray" video a lot which nearly makes it into this microgenre.)

No, I think the hallmarks here are the acid piano and, I gotta say, the ones with male vocals. When the vocals are male it seems more likely to come from a "band" and therefore satisfy the pop element of this microgenre's original charter.

Bonus points for strings and chirpy little synthpeggios.

World of Twist - "Life and Death"

Mr. Hal Jam, Saturday, 16 February 2008 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

i know sun rising has been mentioned but It's Alright Now (Rattling Good Time Mix) by the Beloved also needs to be mentioned. the compilation Blissed Out would be a great investment. you'll have to get the 12" or cd single to get the Rattling Good Time mix though.

Carlton - Do You Dream

Tuomas, Saturday, 16 February 2008 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

ha tuomas, i was umming and ahhing over 'do you dream' for days. not really acidic but great, melodramatic song and i reckon it fits.

or something, Saturday, 16 February 2008 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I nearly forgot to add:

A.R. Kane, "A Love From Outer Space."
