apparently we can expect a new dEUS record on September 12th - their first in six years. fucking YES.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 4 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah! Nath/Stevie Nixed to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I knew you'd be the first to reply, Ned! sadly I fear very few people care about our belgian friends.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Has anybody heard the Plastic Bertrand/Deus clubmix of 'Ca Plain pour moi'? I haven't but would love to

hull hole (hull hole), Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

the new dEUS, with Mauro (yay!) but without Danny (boo!).

StanM, Saturday, 4 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Is it really six years? Great news anyway.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 5 June 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

yay dEUS! love them love them love them. good news indeed.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 5 June 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

dEUS > zita swoon

mister zane (mister_zane), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

YAY! WOOHOO! Can't believe these guys are still going. I still never got round to buying anything after In A Bar Under The Sea. What else is good by them? I have a load of singles (b-sides are ace) and I might have the debut on tape somewhere.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

The Ideal Crash is wicked.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
New album details.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

"Nothing Really Ends" on the album? Hm.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 July 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Leaked!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Leaked indeed, and after several spins I can't get around the somewhat sad (temporary?) )conclusion that Nothing Really Ends is by far the best track on it. And we knew that one already. There's just a very large amount of 'flat' rockers on the album inducing no emotion at all other than kudo's to the producer making it sound so smooth and full and in-yer-face and all. But quite frankly I'm rather disappointed. The 'rocky' songs sound dull, they don't 'speak'.

Gerard (Gerard), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Two tracks in. "Bad Timing" is a little flat, I must agree. "7 Days" is nice and breezy though.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh Simon. You and your dEUS.

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I really enjoyed the new album on 1st few listens. Really happy with what i've heard.
Hope they tour UK again. Saw them at T In The Park in 1995 in my hometown. Steff and co were still in the band then. They had a guy sitting on a couch the whole way through the set just reading a book without ever looking up, until he done the "friday" backing vocals on Suds & Soda at the end.

Paul Lester's Melody Maker review kept going on about the crowds freaky dancing. Well he was stood in front of me and his dancing was certainly freaky!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

who's releasing this in the uk? mmm, the ideal crash is still absolutely fantastic...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Are they still on Island?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

They're on V2 now.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I missed a Dutch program which had Tom Barman talking for THREE HOURS! I think I subconsciously decided that would be too orgasmatique. Then again, after reading reviews on the show, I realized I missed his wicked genius again.Yes, I honestly believe the man's a dEUS. heh. He's fully of himself, I know, but for a reason. ;-)

I like the new album, but it's again a sign that the man's ego can't hold a band together. How many members have come and gone? If only we still had Rudy Trouve, Stef Kamiel and even Marc Meyers. The latter was so much fun in Kiss My Jazz.

The new record is quite nice, but it has its flaws. I don't like the slightly *schizo* sound. They slapped a couple of old singles on there, like that internet-only single and of course (the sublime) Nothing Really Ends.

dEUS > zita swoon

Barf! Aside from the debut (under the old Moondog Jr monniker), the rest is total shit in my opinion. There's much better related bands. I'd even say Magnus (CJ Bolland and Barman collab) is WAY better.

Some of the new members: Mauro (ex-Evil Superstars), ex-drummer of Soulwax and some other guy who used to play with Arno (TC Matic) and Chris Whitley.

YAY! WOOHOO! Can't believe these guys are still going. I still never got round to buying anything after In A Bar Under The Sea. What else is good by them? I have a load of singles (b-sides are ace) and I might have the debut on tape somewhere.

I always considered their B-sides as good, and sometimes even better, than the A-sides. "I suffer rock" is completely ACE. "Sam Peckinpah's daughter." There's so many. :-) Do you have the VIA EP? That's one of their best releases. There's only The Ideal Crash and a compilation after IABUTS. But there's also a soundtrack to his movie (Any Way The Wind Blows) and also his collaboration with CJ Bolland, as Magnus.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I can never remember if Nath actually like dEUS or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to tell isn't it?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

nathalie, there's a rerun of the show next saturday (aug 06) on the same channel at 13h10. more details (as well as the fragments he picked) can be found here

willem (willem), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

hehe Let me make that very clear: I HEART DEUS. ;-)

oooh i think I'll watch the rerun (sitting in a cold bath).

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Nathalie why didn't you say before you love dEUS? You've never mentioned it before..

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I was terribly shy. ;-)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

After a few listens, my favorite of the year. "Bad Timing" and "Sun Ra" are the weakiest, evrything else is pretty awesome.

Grand Epic (Grand Epic), Saturday, 20 August 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

i need to listen again. i was underwhelmed. actually [blushes] i'm, eh, not even sure i finished it. hang on [finds ipod, plugs it in] ... yup, according to the play count i've heard nowt past "pocket revolution". right, time to rectify that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 20 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

meh.

no, still underwhelmed. sorry (grimlord), Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

a lady used to come into my rec store, with occasional updates re her sister, married to a guy in dEUS. Then he dropped out, said they were too weird, accrding to my friend, and he and sis got real organic, when last heard from were wending way up to Findhorn (maybe hitching ride on Vashti's cart?) She never did say this guy's name; I thoght it might be fairly easy to figure out, but apparently not, re turnover mentioned upthread.

don, Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I did a search on dEUS and it came up with barely anything - weird. Sorry Ned.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Just listened to the whole album while sitting and writing. I think this could be the kind of album that grows on me.

Nathalie - yes I do have Via and it's really good. I think I'll go to my Dad's house and pick up all the singles I have stored there then make a compilation. Was Violins and Happy Endings ever released on an album or was it just a single?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

ah, silly me, it was on Via!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm fairly certain the member is Craig Ward. He married to an American girl he had met on tour. But I think they already divorced? I'm not sure. He also dropped out of dEUS. Apparently he became depressed and started taking prozac. Not sure though! So if I'm wrong, don't sue me. ;-) Do you know when he dropped out of dEUS? The problem with dEUS is that so many people have been in it. :-)

Dog Latin, I have a whole bunch of dEUS b-sides. If you like I can open Soulseek and send you some? Or via gmail? I can send you a list of what I have. Email me and I'll send you a track list. :-) I sadly lost a lot of bootlegs. :-( But I did manage to get a few live recordings off the net/soulseek. :-)

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Friday, 23 September 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Like I said, the new album's a grower. I even love "Sun Ra" now. I haven't loved a new album this much since probably a Radiohead album.

Grand Epic (Grand Epic), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I've been quite consistant in saying how great this album is.
Unlike Nath.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 24 September 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

i think this must be my third or fourth proper listen and i agree it's a grower. the last song especially gives me the shudders!

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 24 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

It's great isn't it?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 25 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

It's so far my album of the year I think. Even better than Feels or the Black Dice. Nothing Really Ends is hitting home a bit too hard I'm afraid to say.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Too too good - I'm listening to it for the zillionth time this week and it gets better with every listen. It's rare that I can listen to an album all the way through, sometimes two or three times in a row, but "Pocket Revolution" is so easy on my head I can just chill with it. Last time I had this feeling was with Stephen Malkmus's Pig Lib and that album took ages to get into properly.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'm glad to see a lot of love for this awesome album.

Grand Epic (Grand Epic), Friday, 14 October 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

I've also just discovered the Ideal Crash album and that too is awesome.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 14 October 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

I really like the album! I don't listen to it that much nor in its entirety, but I agree that it's a fantastic album. It's gone gold already in Belgium, which is not surprising of course. They've been touring quite a bit but alas I haven't been to any of the gigs.

one year passes...
over a year down the track i can say it's a perfectly nice album, and maybe a little more than i might've hoped for.

doesn't match the genius of 'worst case...' or 'the ideal crash', but that's to be expected.

the whole things pretty consistent right through. i tend to think it starts off really strong with the first couple of tracks, then comes good again somewhere towards the end. there are a couple of throwaway noisier tracks. i gotta say they were doing the slower numbers more effectively at that point of their career.

missed that pitchfork review the first time round. not a bad review

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 15 April 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

they were doing the slower numbers more effectively than the rockier ones is what i mean, so as to avoid ambiguity.

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 15 April 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the rockers were the best ones!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...

so a new album? and a gig in london?

t_g, Thursday, 28 February 2008 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

The Belgian part of the club tour (6 shows in 6 smallish (cap. 1500-2000 I'd guess) clubs) was sold out in less than 20 minutes yesterday.

New single will be online on their site for free (?) somewhere next week, apparently (but I don't know if that's The Architect or ("Slow"?) since they seem to be releasing a Euro single and a UK single simultaneously

StanM, Thursday, 28 February 2008 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

Another new album out soon. I really want it not to be shit, but they've been on an exponential decline since the Ideal Crash.

Why'd You Wanna Tweet Me So Bad? (dog latin), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

the advance track from it sounded awful.

Simon H., Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

Oh dear. I think I'll keep up the illusion that dEUS disbanded around the time of The Ideal Crash (or even before).

Can't Stop the Rop (seandalai), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

nine months pass...

Unannounced new album "Following Sea" is out today.

StanM, Friday, 1 June 2012 08:34 (thirteen years ago)

physical release next Friday (June 8th) btw - as of now it's only on iTunes (maybe only belgium, don't know)

StanM, Sunday, 3 June 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

it's weird with these guys. i saw them play just a couple of weeks ago, and even though i knew in the back of my mind that they'd quietly but doggedly been putting out albums, i kept defaulting into thinking that it was a reunion show and that they'd been 100% dormant since The Ideal Crash. but all these songs i'd never heard kept appearing in the set, which i guess made me more excited than i might otherwise have been for the likes of "sister dew", "instant street", "fell off the floor, man" and "suds and soda".
